在冬季的几个月里，围困战进入了一段平静时期，因为双方都在集中力量加固自己的防御工事。尽管没有什么大的战斗，但联军还是会向俄军外部据点发起突然袭击，他们的目的不是为了占领这些位置，而是打击俄军士气。和联军的突袭相比，俄军发动的袭击有些规模相当大，足以说明其意图是将敌人从防守阵地上驱逐出去。但事实上，这些袭击又不足够强大，不可能实现这一意图。

在3月22日晚、23日凌晨，约五千名俄军向乳头堡正面方向的法军阵地发起了袭击，这是俄军截至当时最大规模的进攻。承受最大冲击的是朱阿夫第三团，他们与敌人徒手搏斗，坚守阵地。战斗在黑暗中进行，来复枪和滑膛枪射击时的火焰是唯一的亮光。俄军发动侧翼包抄，很快占领了处于他们右翼、防守薄弱的英军阵地，从那里他们开始向法军射击。但是朱阿夫士兵依然坚守阵地，直到英国援军赶到，协助他们将俄军逐回乳头堡方向。俄军在这次袭击中损失惨重：一千一百人受伤，另有超过五百人阵亡，几乎所有伤亡都发生在朱阿夫部队的堑壕里面或周围。战斗结束后，双方同意停战六小时，在这段时间内各自运回堆满了战场的阵亡和受伤官兵。于是几分钟前还在相互搏斗的官兵开始友好交流，用各种手势和一两句对方的语言表达自己的意思。几乎所有的俄国军官法语都说得很好，这是俄罗斯贵族使用的语言。第八十八步兵团（88th Regiment of Foot）的纳撒尼尔·斯蒂文斯上尉（Captain Nathaniel Steevens）目睹了这一场景：
