Author Description

保罗 C. 科兹比（Paul C. Cozby），加利福尼亚大学富勒顿分校的心理学名誉教授。科兹比博士毕业于加利福尼大学河滨分校，在明尼苏达大学获得心理学哲学博士学位。他是美国心理学会会员和心理科学协会成员，担任心理学计算机学会的主席，也是西部心理学会执行主席。他是《在行为科学中使用计算机》一书的作者，并同Daniel Perlman一起担任《社会心理学》杂志的合作主编。

斯科特 C. 贝茨（Scott C. Bates），犹他州立大学的副教授。他在惠特曼学院获得理学学士，在西华盛顿大学获得实验心理学理学硕士，在科罗拉多州立大学获得社会心理学哲学博士。他的研究兴趣和经历很丰富，在许多领域中都进行过研究，例如，青少年问题行为与问题行为预防，高等教育中的教与学，以及室外空间种植与看护植物的心理学结果。

在行为科学中，常常难以精确地知道使用的是顺序量表还是等距量表。然而，因为等距量表比顺序量表允许使用更精致复杂的统计处理，所以，假设变量是用等距量表测量的，常常是有用的。当然，如果测量是名次排列（例如，根据人气、学生在班中的排名），那么，显然用的是顺序量表。
比率量表（ratio scale）变量既有相等的间距，又有指示不存在被测量变量的绝对零点。时间、重量、长度及其他物理度量都是比率量表的最好例子。等距与比率量表的变量在概念上是不同的；然而，分析以这样的变量获得的数据所用的统计程序是一样的。等距与比率量表的重要意义是数据能够用平均数或算术平均数汇总起来。它可提供一个反映了变量的平均量的数字例如，“竞赛获胜人的平均心境为5.1”，或者“完成减少体重项目的人的平均体重为187.7磅”。
