本书重新构筑了前殖民地时期的东南亚史，并将东南亚史的研究推到了一个新的高度。该书是近年来西方对早期东南亚史研究的最重要成果。它继承了法国年鉴学派的传统，特别是布劳岱尔对地中海地区历史的研究方法，注重研究普通人民的日常生活，而不是所谓“决定历史”的大人物和大事件。他也非常重视运用历史的长镜头对那些推动历史变化的根本因素进行研究。

Book Abstract

当然，东南亚人的性行为与生育孩子方面的一些习俗，在降低这一时期出生率方面影响甚微（见本书第四章；Reid1987）。然而，就现代人口的飞速增长来说，过去和现在的重要不同之处可以归结为两个因素，即宗教与战争。
皈依宗教与东南亚其他许多方面的变迁密切相关，因此，从任何意义上来讲，它都不能被视为一个孤立的因素。例如，我们已经看到，人口快速增长的转变首先开始于18世纪中叶的菲律宾。这到底是新基督教价值观的结果，抑或是“西班牙和平”的产物，还是在西班牙统治下农业、卫生、宗教仪式或税收方面的变化所带来的影响？从下面的情况来看，价值观的变化确实明显。据说前基督教时期的米沙鄢妇女故意把她们第三胎及三胎之后的孩子打掉，以保持小型的家庭结构（I）asmarinas1590A：413；Loarca1582：119）。与此形成鲜明对照的是，在基督教的影响深入巩固之后，西班牙人报道中到处是对菲律宾人的溢美之词，诸如他们的“出生率之高，令我们惊叹不已”等等（SanAg-ostin，1720：237；参见（rtega1594：103；Bobadilla1640：292）。
20世纪人口普查的数据也体现了一个显著的反差：在明打威群岛、东松巴、中苏拉威西、婆罗洲高地和吕宋山脉等精灵崇拜的族群地区，出生率特别低；在多巴巴塔克人（TobaBatak）、尼亚斯人（Nias）和萨旦托拉贾人（SadanForaja）等新近皈依基督教的族群地区，出生率则特别高（Volkstelling1930；Reid1987）。如同17世纪一样，在20世纪，新教徒被安置在山谷盆地之中，形成出入方便的聚居区；这种做法大大推动了基督教化的进程。反过来，皈依基督教又常常导致由刀耕火种到永久耕作的转变。由于犁地是男子的任务，这些位于山谷盆地的居民区可能比以前的山顶村落更靠近种植区和水源区，因而大大减轻了妇女的劳动负荷。这种情况，以及随之而来的更为安全稳定的生活，极有可能是促使大型家庭出现的原因。
至少在受到上述各种变化影响的地区，南岛人从精灵崇拜到皈依基督教这一变化的确提高了出生率。

人类的历史就像一张无缝之网，没有哪一个地区能够完全孑然独立，也没有哪一个地区能够像“风下之地”①那样与国际贸易如此密切关联。然而，在承认这种关联性的同时，又不能忽视东南亚人在自己历史舞台上扮演的中心角色；我们这些研究该地区的学者们发现，要做到这一点并非易事。在20世纪上半叶，殖民主义历史千篇一律地把东南亚人贬低为西方扩张大潮中的一个陪衬。民族主义历史把问题进一步扩大化，或者把亚洲人视为西方殖民主义治下被动消极、无力抵抗的受害者，或者把对该地区的研究孤立于国际势力与比较视角之外，以矫正上述倾向。东方学家们的研究则开始发掘整理东南亚人自身文字记录的光荣任务，但是宫廷史书、宗教注释或抒情诗篇与世界的生产与交换到底有何关系，东方学这种博学的传统却并不能提供多少指导。本书中，笔者对主题与资料试图采用的无所不读、无所不包的研究方法并不新颖。殖民主义历史、东方学和民族学对东南亚的研究支离破碎、令人遗憾；但在此前，马斯登（Marsden）、圣杰尔马诺（Sangermano）、莱佛士（Raffles）、克劳福德（Crawfurd）与帕里果瓦（Pallegoix），甚至诸如加尔沃（Galvao）、拉·卢贝尔（La Loubere）和瓦伦坦泰因（Valentijn）等先驱学者，即已通过利用文学、语言、游记、贸易统计，尤其是他们自己所掌握的第一手资料，记述了各自研究主题生活的方方面面。
