1978年底，交通部香港招商局常务副董事长袁庚在李先念划拨的宝安县蛇口半岛（现深圳市南山区辖内）2。14平方公里土地上，坚持破冰之旅，创建蛇口工业区，被誉为中国改革开放实际运作*一人。在蛇口，他以“大不了回秦城监狱去”的大无畏精神，敢于冲破思想牢笼，在荆棘丛中杀出了一条血路，响亮地提出“时间就是金钱，效率就是生命”的口号，影响了全中国。他与蛇口广大创业者开创性地实施了工程承包、干部招聘、民主选举、同级报纸可以批评同级党委等举措，创建了24个全国首创或*一，为中国改革开放写下了浓墨重彩的一章。
作者穷三年之功，追访156人，翻阅大量内部档案及私人日记，进行了抢救式的记录，以重返当年改革现场的叙述文本，重现在历史的节点上起到关键作用人物的生命印记，从一个人的传记呈现一个时代，感受中国改革开放的必然性、必要性及艰巨性。
《袁庚传》共分三卷：《袁庚传·情报生涯》、《袁庚传·改革现场》、《袁庚传·蛇口试管》。现今推出的是《袁庚传·改革现场》，截取时间段为1978-1984年。
