《经典连环画阅读丛书：孙子兵法2（套装共3册）》包括《九变篇》、《行军篇》和《地形篇》。《九变篇》中孙子主要论述了在作战过程中，如何根据特殊的情况变化，灵活机动变换战术以赢得战争的胜利。它集中体现了孙子作战指导思想的基本特征。孙子明确主张将帅应根据五种不同的地理条件实施灵活的指挥，并提出了以“途有所不由”等“五不”措施为内容的作战基本准则。孙子要求将帅们尽可能做到全面辩证地观察问题，见利思害，见害思利，从而趋利避害，防患于未然。
在本篇中，孙子还深刻地阐述了有备无患的备战思想，指出不能寄希望于敌人“不来”、“不攻”，而要立足于自己做好充分准备，拥有强大的实力，震慑住敌人。为了真正贯彻“九变”的灵活作战指导原则，孙子特别重视将吏队伍的建设，因此他语重心长地叮嘱那些身为将帅的人：要克服自己性格上“必死”、“必生”、“忿速”、“廉洁”、“爱民”等五种缺陷，以避免导致“覆军杀将”的悲剧。
《行军篇》的主旨，主要体现在两个方面：一是“处军”，即军队在不同地形条件下如何行军作战和驻扎宿营；二是“相敌”，即怎样仔细观察和判断敌情。
孙子指出，凡行军作战，如何“处军”事关胜负大局，必须认真对待，妥善处置。其总的原则是：要善于利用有利的地形，避开不利的地形。为此，孙子详尽列举了山地、江河、沼泽、平原等四种地形下的不同的“处军”方法。并且进而把利用地形的基本特点归纳为“凡军好高而恶下，贵阳而贱阴，养生而处实”。这是孙子对前人和当时战争中如何利用地形的科学总结。
在“处军”得宜的前提下，孙子强调“相敌”的重要性。他主张仔细观察敌情，在对敌情做出缜密分析、判断的基础上，采取正确的措施打击敌人。他从实战经验中概括出三十余种侦察判断敌情的方法，其要旨就是提倡透过现象看本质，体现了孙子兵学的朴素辩证特征。
孙子在本篇中还提出了一个重要的作战指导思想：主张“并力”（集中兵力），“料敌”（正确判断敌情），“取人”（争取人心），反对少谋无虑，轻敌冒进。在治军上，孙子提倡“合之以文，齐之以武”，赏罚并用，宽严结合，以实现“与众相得”（上下一致）的目的。
《地形篇》是我国最早的有关军事地形学的精辟论述。孙子在这里集中探讨了利用地形的重要性，提出了在不同地形条件下军队作战的若干基本原则，辩证地揭示了敌情与军事地理的相互关系。
孙子根据当时实战的具体要求，具体列举了军队在作战中可能遇到的六种地形，并就此提出了详尽、适宜的用兵方法。基于“地形者，兵之助也”这一精辟论断，孙子主张将9巾要重视对地形的观察和利用，并且将判断敌情同利用地形两者密切地联系起来，这就是所谓：“料敌制胜，计险易、远近，上将之道也。”
孙子进而讨论了由于将帅指挥失当而导致军队失败的六种情况——“六败”。他细致剖析了“六败”的原因，指出这缘于人事，而非天意：“非天地之灾，将之过也。”他对将帅提出了严肃的道德要求：“进不求名，退不避罪，惟民是保。”这一识见，是封建时代那些唯主上之命是从的庸人所无法望其项背的。
在本篇中，孙子还阐述了官兵关系的基本准则，主张将领既要爱护关心士卒，又要严格治军纪律，做到“爱”、“严”结合，奖惩适宜。这一治军理论，在当时具有一定的进步性。
