倘若他在大庭广众之中或客厅里出现，他的尊容和打扮一定会引起在场所有高贵妇女的轻蔑和讪笑。其实，他的服装倒还齐整，只是粗俗、难看，而且很不时兴。至于他的仪表，前边我们已特意描绘过了。他那双颊的皮肤不但不是粉红色的，简直无从辨认它究竟是什么颜色，因为他满脸全是黑色的络腮胡子，一直长到眼边。他的腰身和四肢搭配得固然匀称，可是生得又粗又大，力气壮得更像个庄稼汉。他的肩膀宽得出奇，小腿肚比一个普通轿夫还要肥实。一句话，他通身找不到一点秀气劲儿，而这种秀气和笨力气恰恰相反，它使上流社会的绅士们显得格外体面。这一方面是由于他们祖先所遗传下来的高贵血液——那是用美味的肉汁和名贵的佳酿配合而成的，另一方面则应归之于他们自幼所受的城市教育。
尽管白丽洁小姐十分讲究雅致，可是大尉的谈吐是如此富于魅力，她竟完全看不到他外表上的那些缺陷了。她估量跟大尉一起生活，要远比跟一个外貌比他漂亮得多的小伙子一起生活幸福——这种估计也许是颇为明智的。因此，她牺牲了眼福方面的考虑，来换取一种更实惠的满足。
大尉一发觉白丽洁小姐对他有了爱情（在这方面他的眼力格外犀利），就也马上诚心诚意地向她表示了同样的情意。小姐的姿容也并不比她这位隋郎出色多少。我本想为她画一幅肖像，怎奈一位更高明的画家贺加斯①先生早已留下了她的倩影。他多年前就画过她，后来把她放到一幅描绘冬晨的版画里，最近还公开展出过。她倒是冬晨的一个很恰当的象征。我们看到她正朝修道院花园②教堂走去（在画面上，她确实是在走着），一个面黄肌瘦的小厮捧着祈祷书，跟在她后边。大尉也很聪明，他懂得美貌不过是转瞬即逝的东西，他宁可娶这么一位小姐而得到他所巴望的种种实际好处。世上有一种聪明人，他们认为女性的姿色无非是过眼云烟，不值分文；说得更老实些，他们宁可跟一个丑八怪结婚而过华贵生活，也不愿娶上一位如花似玉的美人而忍受清贫。大尉就是这样一位。他胃口好，不挑肥拣瘦，所以自信尽管在婚筵上缺了美色这味佐料，也一定颇能尽兴。
