Book Abstract

化学是一门历史悠久的学科，它的起源可以追溯到远古时代。因为“水”与“火”的利用推动了人类社会的发展，而“水与火”又是溶液化学和氧化还原反应的重要研究内容，因此，有人认为人类有科学就有了化学。换句话说，自然科学始于化学。这种说法不无道理。即使作为一门独立的科学，化学也有几个世纪的历史了。然而现代化学的成长则是近百年的事，特别是20世纪后期，化学得到了飞速的发展。由于其他学科的出现和前进，使学科间得以相互渗透，于是又出现了许多边缘科学，也出现了更多的学科分支，如化学物理、生物化学、地球化学、环境化学、药物化学、计算机化学、等离子体化学、放射化学、天然产物化学，以及其他学科在化学中的应用等等。另外，化学各分支之间也相互渗透又出现了诸多子学科，如配位化学、金属有机化学、高分子化学与物理、生物无机化学、物理无机化学等等。随着人类物质生活水平的不断提高，人们对消费化学、化妆品化学、食品化学也十分青睐，可以说，化学无处不在处处在，人类的生产与生活时时处处离不开化学。因而，化学的传播与交流显得异常活跃。德国《语言学及语言交际工具问题手册》中统计，在全球众多语言中英语使用最广，约85％的文献用英语出版发行。全球重要外文化学刊物全部使用英语发行，各个国家或地区的知名刊物也有英文摘要。英语的广泛使用，要求非英语国家的科技工作者尽快掌握英语，至少要能够看懂别人的英文文章；进一步，也能够用简单明了的英语表述自己的研究成果，准确地传递信息，使国际同行能够看懂。当然，要做到信、达、雅并不是一件容易的事，唯一的办法是多读、多写、多练。只能模仿，不能推理，因为语言是一个民族约定俗成的表述方式。而且，语言随着时代的前进也在不断革新，比如，网络语言不可能出现在19世纪。

Introduction

本书第一次印刷出版时的名称为“化学英语写作”，于1996年由甘肃教育出版社出版发行，约11万字。2003年更名为“化学论文英语写作”，改由中国石化出版社出版发行，编写时约请了高原、刘惠涛和Leong Chee Liak（新加坡）三位博士参与选材，篇幅增至28万字。此次修订当属第三版，由高锦章（西北师范大学）、高原和刘惠涛（烟台大学）共同编写。编者在认真听取了各方面的意见后，对内容做了较大变动，以适应专业英语“阅读”和“写作”两门课程的教学需要。全书由五部分组成：第一部分为“化学专业英语中常见的语法现象”；第二部分为“论文格式与写作”；第三部分为“投稿过程”；第四部分为“国际学术会议”：第五部分为“化学专业英语中常用的词组”。

西北师范大学化学系为研究生开设“化学专业英语”和“化学英语写作”两门课已有20多年的历史，听课的研究生数以千计，修订本教材的原动力正是来自听课的研究生。由于研究生的英语水平逐年提高，阅读范围不断拓宽，网上投稿的次数增多，因而遇到的问题也越来越多，诸多诉求推动了教材的更新。为此，首先应该向多年来参与本课程学习和讨论的研究生致谢。开设两门课程的目的就是为了提高研究生的阅读与写作能力，而阅读与写作如同左膀右臂，相辅相成，不可缺一。基于这种思路，本次修订中加大了句子成分分析的力度，例句尽量选自美英国家的大学化学教材。一般说来，教材中使用的语言比较规范，有利于学生学习与临摹。而发表在科技刊物中的论文，其英语水平和表述风格瑕瑜互见。因为衡量文章质量的首要标尺是科技含量。因此，编写时参考的学术文章以新近发表的居多，而参考的教科书其出版年代跨度稍宽，有10余年前出版的，也有近期发行的。有趣的是书中许多例子多年不变，且多部教科书所选例子大同小异，表述方式雷同，实属经典。从一个侧面可以看出这些文字业已经过多年的推敲与提炼，为化学工作者所认可，可供初学者临摹。另一点是尽量将阅读与写作融为一体，句子成分分析的目的是帮助学生阅读与理解，并非刻意肢解。读的书多了，见识广了，自然就会写了，“读书破万卷，下笔如有神”就是这个道理。本书将作为“化学专业英语”和“化学英语写作”两门课程共同使用的教材试用，先讲授本书第一部分和第五部分，作为“化学专业英语”；后讲授第二、第三和第四部分，作为“化学专业英语论文写作”的内容。
