Book Abstract

孟子到了宋都商丘，并没有见到宋王；因为王不曾延请孟子，孟子也不肯改变常态，自动求见。他只和宋大夫戴不胜、戴盈之略有交往（有人说不胜即盈之，一名一字）。有一天戴盈之说：“夫子建议田赋按十分之一的税率征收，免除关卡和市场上的捐税，今年还办不到。请让我们把旧税先减轻些，明年再废止，怎么样？”孟子说：“比方现在有个人，每天攘取邻家一只鸡。有人告诉他：‘这不是君子的行为。’他说：‘请让我减少些，每月攘取一只，明年再罢手。’如果知道不合理，就该赶快停止了，为什么要等到明年？”知善不行，闻过不改，可以说古今同然；但是孟子的快人快语，却世所罕闻。

孟子离宋，取道薛（齐邑，在今山东省滕县东南四十四里）、滕（滕县西南十四里）返邹。

孟子的学生陈臻问道：“从前在齐国，齐王送给夫子兼金（比普通黄金贵一倍的纯金）一百镒（一镒，二十两），却不肯接受。最近在宋国，宋王送黄金七十镒，却收下了；在薛邑，薛君送黄金五十镒，也收下了。如果从前不接受是对的，那么最近接受就不对了；如果最近接受是对的，那么从前不接受就不对了，二者之中，夫子总要占一项哩！”孟子说：“我前后都是对的。在宋国，我将有远行；对远行的人，必须赠送旅费，宋王送金子来，说是‘赠送旅费’，我为什么不接受？在薛邑有人要杀害我，我怀有戒心，薛君送金子来，说是‘听说夫子怀有戒心，送给夫子购置兵备’，我又为什么不接受？至于在齐国，就没有任何名义。没有名义而送东西给我，是收买我啊！哪有君子可以用钱财收买的呢？”
