什么是构图技巧？构图技巧描述的是导演在拍摄一场戏时，定位、组合、安排以及观看被摄物体在画面内的位置的方式。也许导演结构了这样一个镜头，正面角色都在银幕的左边、反面角色都在银幕的右边，也许他会让摄影机稍微倾斜一些,以增加镜头的张力。
构图的理念是从几千年的美术史中继承下来的，而且，每一种构图法则在电影领域里都是很有意义的。本书绝不打算成为取景和构图方面的权威论著，关于这个主题，已经有了大量的优秀教科书。然而，在电影制作中最经常使用的一些构图技巧还是被列于此书之中。
摄影机高度 Camera Height
摄影机的高度对于一个镜头的意义有相当大的影响。
如果你只给观众展示一个人的脚，就会产生一种神秘感——他们是谁？这是一种很常见的技巧。如果没有展示人物的脸，但是展示了他们上半身躯体，你会发现多了一些关于他们信息（他们也许正在用手做什么），但是仍然不能确切知道他们是谁。最后，当摄影机高度上升到角色眼睛的位置时，悬念才会消失，角色被展现出来。

戏剧性角度可以强化一场戏的情感冲击力。摄影机的低角度使得角色和物体仿佛很高大、很有力。摄影机的高角度给角色一个被贬低的感觉———好像观众正在俯视他们。
极端角度就是夸张了的戏剧性角度。极端的低角度可以起幅于被摄物的脚下，朝天拍摄。极端的高角度可能是在高耸的办公大楼上向下观看，俯瞰人类的渺小。
鸟瞰视角是一种极端角度，就是把摄影机直接置于场景的上方、径直向下拍摄。
在影片《出租汽车司机》（Taxi Driver，1976）中，用了一个很高的戏剧性角度让观众看到了交火之后的残杀。在影片《飞瀑欲潮》（Niagara，1953）中，戏剧性角度用在了一个男人杀害他的妻子的时刻。低角度在影片《野良犬》（Stray Dog，1949）中，用于表现一场
对话，画面的大部分都被上方的乌云所占据。在影片《乌鸦》（The Crow，1994）中，使用了很多极端角度来实现连环漫画的美感，连环漫画是一种常见的媒介，它的角度和透视都是很夸张的。在影片《终结者2：审判日》（Terminator2：Judgment Day，1991）中，很多表现终结者的镜头都是从低角度拍摄的，这种技巧强化了终结者这一形象的精神力量。
戏剧性角度
银幕方向 Screen Direction
保持一组镜头的视觉流畅是十分有必要的。简单地说银幕方向是指场景中被摄物的朝向——左或者右。在剪接的时候，银幕方向可以用来维持视觉上的连续性，或者以一种非常规的方式使用，从而增强场景的冲击力。
例如：若一个导演正在拍摄两个相互交谈着的角色，他可能要用到特写。他必须当心，总得从相同的一侧来拍摄演员。如果他没有这样做，可能就会使某个演员在这个对话片段中面朝银幕的右边，而在另一个片段中却朝向银幕的左边。这会使观众感到非常困惑。
这就是通常所说的180毅规则——为了确保银幕方向的一致，你必须呆在角色周围的一个180毅的弧度内。当然，所有的规则都是可以被打破的，这取决于导演的决定。
