Author Description

阿玛斯，21世纪最重要的心灵导师之一，“钻石途径”创始人。1944年，生于科威特，学术专长是物理、数学及心理学。1975年，在科罗拉多及加州创立Ridhwan学苑，学员遍布世界各地。1986年，创立钻石丛书出版社（Diamond Books）。其深度心理治疗方法在西方超个人心理学领域具有重要地位，钻石途径及研习机构（The Diamcand Heart and Training Institute，DHAT）目前仍发行有关阿玛斯教诲的录像带及录音带。
阿玛斯具有完整的现代心理学背景、丰富的个案经验，并受过最高层的佛法训练和东方修炼法门，又撷取了葛吉夫的教诲、苏菲神秘主义、金刚乘和禅宗的精髓。他最主要的贡献是将西方心理学与东方智慧整合起来，发展出一条循序渐进、直接而精准的“钻石途径”。

当然，还有许多种方式可以逃避那份无意义感。许多人会借着感官刺激或各种活动来逃避无意义感，譬如从事危险运动、犯罪活动或嗑药。这些强烈的感官刺激活动往往能带来下面这些感觉：“你看我是活着的，我的人生正在发生一些事，它不是空空洞洞、毫无意义的。”另外有些人则会借由钝化自己，让自己变得迟缓或不清醒来逃避无意义感。人们可能经年累月地活在最肤浅的层次里。
那些不断追求目标来达成意义的人，其实也是在钝化自己。这些能带来意义的活动是很难被合弃的，因为这份不断想要思考、造作的需求，已经变得越来越强烈了。有的人从未停止过担忧，因为他们不知道自己的活动一旦停止，该如何去面对那份空虚的感觉。只要我们还有一个目标，即使是治疗身体的病痛，都能为自己的人生带来一点意义。企图治好疼痛的膝盖，也能带来一点意义。许多父母无法找到自己人生的意义，于是就借由孩子来达成他们的心愿。
你认为以某种方式生活，人生就不再空虚了
你看这个议题渗透得多么广，即使是追求享乐，也是在期待这些活动能带来意义和重要感。你总认为若是以某种方式生活，人生就不再空虚了。或者你觉得直接面对生命的无意义和空虚，你会承受不了。我们确实无法活在没有意义、没有价值、没有重要性的生活里，因此我们总是在追寻一些替代晶。这些人生的活动并没有错，也不是不好，问题是我们在它们身上投射了过多不实的期待，譬如孩子可能承受母亲过多的期待和要求。而艺术活动一旦用来满足重要感，乐趣就不见了。它会变成一种逃避、压抑和分心的方式。
最终看来，对意义和重要感的欲求，就是一种对身份认同的追寻。我们的这些活动都是为了带给自己一种身份感。深入地探究我们会发现，这些活动都跟“我是谁”有关，譬如我是教会里的牧师、医生或某某人的妻子。虽然我们会把角色看成是社会成规而非最重要的东西，但这些身份在我们心中仍然有重要性，我们会抓住这些东西为自己带来一些安全感。其实所有的人际关系都带给我们一种身份感，因为他们就像是一面面的镜子，而我们的成就也会反映出自己的价值。我们都想变成某某人，符合某种形象，譬如医生、老师、律师、领袖、治疗者、完美的母亲或父亲等等，都是一些助人的形象。还有的人想变成大企业家或杰出练达的知识分子。另外有些人则希望自己变成谦和的圣人或真理的追寻者。
如果不把自己的价值放在任何事物上，我还剩下什么？
因此我们会发现，所有的努力之中都有对意义和重要性的需求，而我们总觉得人生若是没有意义就活不下去了。这就是为什么某些非常有成就的名人或有钱人，会在金钱、美貌或名望丧失之后结束自己的生命。这些东西都不见了，活着还有什么意义呢？另外有些人会在伴侣过世之后选择自杀，他们似乎把人生的意义都投注在伴侣身上了。当生命最核心的动力消失时——也许是关系，也许是回忆，也许是一份理想——他们的人生只剩下了一片空虚。许多人会惊讶地发现，他们竟然在某个人或某种成就之上投注了那么多意义。一旦失去这些东西，真相会变得非常明朗。即使从一个没什么意义的工作退休下来，也会使人怅然若失，其实他们失去的只是一种身份感罢了。能够填补空虚的东西已经不见了，因此必须面对过去所逃避的那份毫无意义的空虚感。
其实这份空虚感一直都在那里，但其中有一块浮标，这浮标就是我们的事业、关系、理想、人生哲学或是性爱之类的刺激品。整个社会不但容许这种用来替代根本意义的外在元素，甚至会将它们理想化。即使是我们的爱、才智或身体，都会带给我们一种身份感。
