《李自成》以李自成领导的农民军为主线，描写了崇祯十一年（公元1638年）秋李自成和农民军在陕西潼关南原大战中，经过殊死战斗，几乎全军覆没，潜入深山，惨淡经营，重整旗鼓。后入河南，占洛阳，攻开封，克襄阳，破潼关，入西安，陷太原，所向披靡，于十七年春进入北京，崇祯自尽，明朝灭亡。在李自成走向辉煌胜利的同时，由于战略、政策上的失误等原因，导致山海关之战惨败，回到北京，匆匆登极，退出北京，一路节节溃败，以至撤离西安，败退豫鄂，最后单人独骑牺牲于湖北九宫山，成为我国历史上一大悲剧英雄。

Content Description

《李自成·第4卷》分上、下两册。反映的是崇祯十六年十二月中旬至崇祯十七年四月上旬短短百余天里中国发生的翻天覆地的大事。
李自成从米脂祭祖返回长安后，立即准备东征。正月初三，他亲率大军渡黄河，入山西，破太原，过大同，一路所向披靡，顺利抵达北京城下。当义军进逼之初，崇祯是留下或是南逃，朝廷上下意见各异，议而不决。当崇祯决定南逃时，已错过时机，最后酿成崇祯自缢殉国、明朝覆灭的悲剧。本卷新补入的"梦江南"内容，更进一步烘托了崇祯之死和明朝败亡的悲剧气氛。
李自成进京后，群臣忙于"劝进"和演习登极大典的礼仪；刘宗敏用酷刑向明朝的勋戚、官员们追赃；大顺军纪律败坏，城内不断发生抢劫、强奸案，人们对大顺政权日益不满。吴三桂拒绝了李自成的劝降，准备向清方"借兵"，而掌握清国实权的多尔衮早就虎视眈眈关注着关内局势。陶醉在胜利中的李自成猛然意识到形势的严峻，决定推迟登极，亲率并无优势的军队讨伐吴三桂。就在出发前夜，由他亲自赐婚的宫女费珍娥于洞房中刺杀了他的爱将罗虎……

Author Description

姚雪垠（1910—2002），河南邓州人，现当代著名作家。短篇小说《差半车麦秸》，中篇小说《牛全德与红萝卜》，长篇小说《春暖花开的时候》、《长夜》、《李自成》等曾在海内外产生广泛影响。特别是《李自成》，不仅填补了“五四”以来中国长篇历史小说的空白，而且取得了多方面的艺术成就和开创性贡献，是具有里程碑意义的文学巨著。《李自成》第二卷获首届茅盾文学奖。曾任中华全国文艺界抗敌协会理事、创研部副部长，上海大夏大学教授、副教务长，湖北省文联主席，中国新文学学会会长，中国作家协会名誉副主席等职。
