第二章水浒传
第一节水浒传的成书过程和作者
元末明初，和《三国演义》同时出现的有《水浒传》。《水浒传》是一部描写宋代宋江起义的长篇小说，是在长期群众创作的基础上经过作家的综合加工再创作，又经过不同思想倾向的文人多次增删修改而成的。
宋江等三十六人在梁山水泊的起义是《水浒传》创作的历史根据。关于宋江起义，在历史著作中有些零星的记载。《宋史·徽宗本纪》：“淮南盗宋江等犯淮阳军，遣将讨捕；又犯东京、江北，入楚海州界，命知州张叔夜招降之。”《张叔夜传》说：“宋江起河朔，转略十郡，官兵莫敢撄其锋。”《东都事略·侯蒙传》说：“江以三十六人横行河朔，官军数万无敢抗者，其才必过人。”从上述记载中可以想见当时起义军所向披靡、锐不可当的气势。关于起义的结局，记载不一，有的说被张叔夜招降；有的说被折可存平定；也有的说招降后又去讨方腊，被封为节度使。
宋末元初，画家龚开的《宋江三十六人赞》，初次完整地记录了三十六人的姓名和绰号。《序》说：“宋江事见于街谈巷语，不足采者。虽有高如李嵩辈传写，土大夫亦不见黜。余年少时壮其人，欲存之画赞。”可见宋江等故事，已引起人们广泛的注意。
水浒故事在民间广泛流传的时期，也正是说话、杂剧等通俗文学逐渐发展到成熟的时期；宋末元初，水浒故事已成为艺人们讲述、演唱的重要内容，以水浒故事为题材的话本和戏剧相继问世。从南宋罗烨《醉翁谈录》中“小说开辟”一条所记的说话目录看，已有“公案类石头孙立”、“朴刀类青面兽”、“杆棒类花和尚、武行者”等，这些显然都是有关水浒故事的段落。
宋末元初的《大宋宣和遗事》涉及水浒故事的部分，虽内容非常简单，可能只是说话人的提纲，但给我们展示了《水浒传》的原始面貌，是现传讲说水浒故事的最早话本。其中着力叙写的是杨志卖刀、晁盖等劫生辰纲和宋江杀阎婆惜等情节，末尾还提及受张叔夜“招诱”，并说：“后遣宋江收方腊有功，封节度使。”元代出现了一批水浒戏，在这些戏里，水浒原来的人物故事日益发展丰富起来。水浒英雄由三十六人发展到七十二人，又发展到一百单八人。对梁山泊的描写也接近《水浒传》了。其中有的英雄人物如李逵、宋江、燕青等已有生动的描绘。
施耐庵、罗贯中，就在宋元以来广泛流传的民间故事、话本、戏曲的基础上，进行综合性的再创作，才写成了这部反映农民起义的作品《水浒传》。
关于施耐庵，没有什么可靠的历史记载。民间传说他曾参与过张士诚领导的农民起义，未必可信。但他生长淮北，时代较罗贯中为早，元末轰轰烈烈的农民大起义，当是亲身经历过的。
