《晚清四大谴责小说二十年目睹之怪现状（套装上下册插图本）》是一部带有自传性质的作品，晚清四大谴责小说之一。以主人公的经历为主要线索，从他为父亲奔丧开始，到经商失败结束。通过“九死一生”二十年闻的遭遇和见闻，反映了光绪十年（1884）中法战争前后到二十世纪初期的社会现实，暴露了封建社会总崩溃时期统治阶级的腐败和堕落；除官场外，还写到了商场和洋场，客观上揭示了整个封建社会的黑暗及其必然灭亡的命运。

《晚清四大谴责小说老残游记（插图本）》是晚清四大谴责小说的代表作。小说以郎中老残的种种经历为情节主线，从老残这个特殊人物的视角，透视腐败衰朽的晚清时代奇特的社会图景，通过对官僚群像的塑造，抨击了清政府的反动统治，富于谴责的力度与深度，同时歌颂了普通民众的善良、正直与热情，从而使上层社会的丑恶与下层社会的清新构成了鲜明的对比。此次出版，由陈翔鹤校订，戴鸿森注释，并配备了精美的插图。

《晚清四大谴责小说孽海花（插图本）》是与《官场现形记》、《二十年目睹之怪现状》、《老残游记》几乎同时出现的晚清四大谴责小说之一。鲁迅曾称赞《孽海花》“结构工巧，文采斐然”，具有很高的艺术水平。

《晚清四大谴责小说孽海花（插图本）》原由金松岑创意，并写出了六回，第一、二两回发表在1903年10月出版的留学生杂志《江苏》上；同年夏秋之交，金氏将原稿移交曾朴续作。《孽海花》以状元郎金雯青（影射洪钧）与名妓傅彩云（影射赵彩云）的婚姻生活故事为情节主线，将三十年间重要历史事件的侧影及其相关的趣闻轶事，加以剪裁提炼，熔铸成篇，反映了晚清同治中期至光绪后期这一特定历史阶段政治和文化的变迁。

Author Description

李伯元（1867-1906），名绪成，字宝嘉。江苏常州武进县人。著有《庚子国变弹词》四十回、《官场现形记》六十回、《文明小史》六十回、《中国现在记》十二回、《活地狱》四十三回（伯元写了三十九回就去世，吴研人续四十至四十二回，欧阳巨源续四十三回）、《海天鸿雪记》二十回，以及《李莲英》、《海上繁华梦》、《南亭笔记》、《南亭四话》（诗话、词话、联话、曲话）、《滑稽丛话》、《尘海妙品》、《奇书快睹》、《醒世缘弹词》等书十多种。

吴趼人（1867-1910），清代谴责小说家，字小允，又字茧人，后改趼人。广东南海（广州）人，号沃尧因居佛山镇，自称我佛山人。清末（近代）小说家。活跃在清代文学时期，代表作品：《二十年目睹之怪现状》、《痛史》、《九命奇冤》等。

曾朴（1872～1935），字孟朴，号籀斋，笔名东亚病夫，江苏常熟人。他是清末民初小说家，出版家，主要著作有《孽海花》、《鲁男子》（未完成）。

刘鹗（1857年10月18日—1909年8月23日），清末小说家。谱名震远，原名孟鹏，字云抟、公约。后更名鹗，字铁云（刘铁云[1]），又字公约，号老残。署名“鸿都百炼生”。汉族，江苏丹徒（今镇江市）人，寄籍山阳（今淮安楚州）。刘鹗学识博杂，涉猎文学、考古、算学、医学等众多领域，著述颇丰，其所著《老残游记》备受世人赞誉，是晚清四大谴责小说之一。刘鹗自青年时期拜从太谷学派李光(龙川)之后，终生主张以“教养”为大纲，发展经济生产，富而后教，养民为本的太谷学说。他一生从事实业，投资教育，为的就是能够实现太谷学派“教养天下”的目的。晚年被流放新疆。
