居里夫人的童年生活 1867年11月，华沙市的弗瑞达路上，人们看到乌拉狄斯拉夫·斯可罗多夫斯基坐在高高的四轮马车上，脸上显现出难得一见的快活表情。他挥动鞭子甩得“啪啪”作响，引得街上的人们纷纷停下来看是怎么一回事。
“嘿！”有人问他，“斯可罗多夫斯基先生，今天有什么让人开心的消息吗？” “这年头，我们已经很久没有让人开心的消息了！”乌拉狄斯拉夫·斯可罗多夫斯基这样说着，脸上还是愉快的表情，“我又有一个女儿啦，现在我正赶回去呢！” 乌拉狄斯拉夫·斯可罗多夫斯基是当地有名的中学教师，他的妻子则把一所女子学校办得非常好。当时的华沙，已经被沙皇①统治，人们生活在压抑之中，他们被迫尊敬沙皇，不许有任何关于本民族的活动。斯可罗多夫斯基一家也是如此，比如斯可罗多夫斯基就不得不在他所在学校的校长面前分外小心言谈举止，因为校长是代表沙皇的人。

玛丽当然不知道结核病是什么，也不知道父亲看到母亲咳嗽时脸上出现的沉重表情意味着什么。她只知道，在祷告的时候，父亲会让孩子们都加上一句：“主啊，保佑我们的母亲早日康复！” 斯可罗多夫斯基家的孩子都知道，只要是父母在书房里谈话，他们是不可以偷听的，也不可以在外面告诉别人，“不然，我们全家就不能住在这个地方了，我和妈妈都会被抓到监狱里去，你们也会被送到环境最差的孤儿院去！”斯可罗多夫斯基老爹总是这样一本正经地告诉他们。
玛丽对此非常好奇。有一次，她从外面回来，高声喊着“妈妈”，却被姐姐拉住，告诉她：“妈妈和爸爸在书房呢！不要打扰他们。” 小玛丽朝着姐姐挤挤眼睛，然后蹑手蹑脚地来到书房门口，听到里面断断续续的声音，父亲和母亲的声音听起来那么的悲凉与沉痛，他们说到“沙皇”、“高压统治”、“监狱”……玛丽虽然听不懂，但是她依然感觉到眼前似乎有灰色的烟雾升腾起来，笼罩了她刚才愉快的心情。
她一声不吭，悄悄地下楼来，不理会姐姐，独自走到房间里。玛丽心情不好的时候总会到这个房间来，这里有高高的架子，上面摆放着许多奇妙的东西，那是斯可罗多夫斯基先生上课用的物理仪器：U形磁铁、天平、握力计，玻璃球…… 在玛丽看来，这些小东西是那么的神奇！那个挂在墙上的银色气压计，总是被擦得闪闪发亮；上面金色的小指针，有时候停在某个地方一动不动，可是当玛丽不去注意它的时候，它又会偷偷地往旁边移一小格。还有那个小天平，手指稍微碰一下就动个不停，比最娇气的女孩子还害羞。
玛丽问父亲：“爸爸，这些东西是用来干吗的？” 父亲摸摸她的小脑袋，慈爱地告诉她：“孩子，这是物理仪器。” “物——理——仪——器！”玛丽跟着父亲一字一顿地念着。此时这4个字对于她来说还是新名词呢！谁会想到几十年后，她不仅天天与它们打交道，还用它们获得了世界上最高的荣誉——诺贝尔物理学奖！
