Author Description

尼·奥斯特洛夫斯基，（1904-1936），苏联作家。1919年入伍，成为布琼尼骑兵团一名侦察兵。负伤复员后从事文学创作。主要著作《钢铁是怎样炼成的》《暴风雨中诞生的》。
梅益（1914-2003），曾用名梅雨，广东潮州人。1929年入上海中国公学。1934年开始发表译作。1937年在上海主持《译报》。1945年筹办《新华日报》（上海版）。解放后任中央广播事业局局长、中国大百科全书出版社总编辑。主要译著有斯诺《西行漫记》（合译），斯诺夫人N．威尔斯《续西行漫记》，尼赫鲁《自传》，尼·普里波依的《对马》，《钢铁是怎样炼成的》。

Book Abstract

教室里没有一点声音，大家都缩着脖子。谁也不知道保尔·柯察金为什么会这样被赶出学校。只有保尔的好朋友谢廖沙·勃鲁扎克明白这回事。他们六个功课不及格的学生在神父家的厨房里等着补考的时候，他亲眼看见保尔把一撮烟末儿撒在神父厨房里预备做复活节糕的面团上。
被赶出来的保尔坐在学校门口底下一层台阶上。他想，该怎么回家呢？他对在税务官家里当娘姨、每天从早忙到晚、对什么事都挺认真的母亲，又该怎么说呢？
想到这里，他给眼泪哽住了：
“现在我该怎么办呢？都怨这该死的神父。我为什么要给他撒上一把烟末儿呢？那是谢廖沙叫干的。他说：‘来，咱们给这讨厌的老畜生撒一把。’我们就把烟末儿撒上去了。现在谢廖沙倒逃脱了，我呢，看来准要给开除的。”
保尔和瓦西里神父早就记了仇。有一天，保尔和米什卡·列夫丘科夫打架，老师不准他回家吃饭。为了怕他独自在空教室里淘气，就叫他和高年级的学生一起，坐在教室后面的凳子上。
那个高年级的教师是一个瘦子，穿着黑上衣，正在跟学生讲地球和天体。保尔听着他讲什么地球已经存在好几百万年了，什么星星也跟地球相像，惊奇地张着大嘴。他觉得很奇怪，几乎想站起来说：“老师，这跟圣经上说的完全两样呀。”但是他怕挨罚，没敢问。
保尔的圣经课，神父平时总是给他五分。祈祷文和新旧约他都背得烂熟，上帝哪一天创造了哪一种东西他都知道。关于这件事保尔决定问问瓦西里神父。在下次上圣经课的时候，神父刚一坐下，保尔就举起手来，一得到允许，他就站起来说：
“神父，为什么高年级的老师说，地球已经存在了好几百万年了，不像圣经上说的五千年……”他突然给瓦西里神父那尖利的喊叫声打断了：
“混账东西，胡说八道！这是你从圣经上念来的吗？”
保尔还没有来得及答话，神父就已揪住他的两只耳朵，把他的头往墙上撞了。一分钟后，给撞伤了和吓昏了的他，已经给神父推到走廊上去了。
保尔回到家里，他母亲又狠狠地责骂了他一顿。
第二天，他母亲到学校里，请求瓦西里神父让她的孩子回校。从那时起，保尔就恨死了神父。又恨他，又怕他。他从不饶恕稍微侮辱过他的人；他更不会忘记神父冤枉打他这一顿，只是怀恨在心，不露出来。
他还受过瓦西里神父无数次小的侮辱：往往为了些极小的事情，神父就把他赶出教室，有时好几个星期天天罚他站墙角，而且从来不问他功课，因此他不得不在复活节前跟别的几个功课不及格的同学一道到神父家去补考。他们在厨房里等候的时候，他就把一撮烟末儿撒在复活节蒸糕用的面团上。
这件事谁也没看见，但是神父马上就猜出是谁干的。
……下课了，孩子们成群地拥到院子里来，围住了保尔。保尔忧郁地坐在那里，一声不响。谢廖沙在教室里没有出来，他觉得自己也有错，但又无法帮助他的朋友。
校长叶弗列姆·瓦西里耶维奇的头从教员室的窗口探出来了，他那低沉的声音，使保尔吃了一惊。他喊道：
“叫柯察金马上到我这里来！”
保尔的心怦怦直跳，朝教员室走去。
车站食堂的老板，一个面色苍白、眼睛无神的上了年纪的人，看了看站在一边的保尔。
“他几岁了？”
“十二岁。”保尔的母亲回答。
“行，让他留下吧。条件是这样：工钱每月八卢布，当班的时候管饭，顶班一天一夜，在家休息一天一夜，可是不许偷东西。”
“呵，不会的，老板，决不会的！我担保保尔什么也不偷。”保尔的母亲惊慌地说。
“好啦，让他今天就上班。”老板命令说，又转身向旁边那个站在柜台后面的女招待说：“齐娜，带这小孩到洗刷间去，叫佛罗霞安顿他，顶格里什加。”
女招待放下了正在切火腿的刀子，向保尔点了点头，就走过食堂，朝通到洗刷间的旁门走去。保尔跟在她后面。他的母亲一面紧紧地跟着他们，一面小声对他说：
“保尔，亲爱的，你干活要卖力气，别让自己丢脸呵。”
她用忧郁的目光把儿子送走之后，才朝门口走去。
洗刷间里的活儿很紧张：一张桌子上堆着一大堆盘碟和刀叉，有几个女人用搭在肩膀上的毛巾在那里擦家什。
一个年纪比保尔大一点的、长着一头火红色蓬乱头发的男孩子，正在对付两个大茶炉。
洗家什的大锅里的开水正冒着蒸气，把整个洗刷间弄得热气腾腾的，保尔刚进去的时候，看不清女工们的脸。他站在那儿，不晓得该干什么，也不晓得该到哪儿去才好。
齐娜走到一个正在洗盘子的女人旁边，拍着她的肩膀，说：
“佛罗霞，这是刚给你们雇来的小伙计，预备顶格里什加的。你告诉他干什么吧。”
她转过身来指着那个叫做佛罗霞的女人，对保尔说：
“她是这里的领班。她叫你干什么，你就干什么。”说完了，她就转身回食堂去了。
“是，”保尔轻轻地回答说，一面看着站在他前面的佛罗霞，等候她的吩咐。佛罗霞擦去了额上的汗，从上到下地把他仔细打量一番，好像在估量他能不能称职似的，然后把一只从胳膊肘上滑下来的袖子卷起来，用一种非常动听的、深沉的声音说：
“小弟弟，你的活挺简单：就是说，每天早晨要准时把这个大铜壶烧热，里面的水要老开，自然，木柴要你自己劈，还有那两个大茶炉也是你的活儿。另外，活紧的时候，你就帮着擦刀叉，把脏水提出去。小弟弟，你的活儿不少，够你忙的了，”她说话，用的是科斯特罗马地方的土音，把重音放在字母“a”上。她说话的口音和那长着翘鼻子的、泛着红晕的脸，使得保尔心里高兴些了。
“看来，这位大婶还不坏，”保尔心里这样想，于是就鼓起勇气问佛罗霞：
“现在我该干些什么呢，大婶？”
保尔说到这里，洗刷间里的女工们的哈哈大笑，把他最后的话盖住了。
“哈哈哈！……佛罗霞认了一个侄子……”
“哈哈！……”佛罗霞笑得最厉害。
因为蒸气的关系，保尔看不清她的脸，其实佛罗霞只有十八岁。
保尔觉得很难为情，他又转身问一个男孩子：
“现在我该做些什么呢？”
那个男孩子只是嘻嘻地笑着回答：
“还是问你的大婶去吧，她会告诉你的，我是这里的临时工。”说完，他就转身跑进厨房里去了。
这时候保尔听见一个年纪不轻的洗家什的女工说：“到这里来，帮着我擦叉子吧。你们为什么笑得那样厉害？这孩子究竟说了什么好笑的话？”她给他一条毛巾，说：“给你，拿去，一头用牙咬住，一头用手拉紧，再把叉子齿儿在这上面来回地擦，要擦得干干净净，一点儿脏东西也不许有。咱们这里对这件事挺认真。老爷们都仔细看叉子，要是找到一点点的脏东西，那就糟了。老板娘一下子就把你赶出去。”
“什么？老板娘？”保尔不明白。“刚才雇我的那个男人不是老板吗？”
那女工笑起来了：
“孩子，你不知道，这儿的老板只是一件摆设，一个废物，这里的事情都由老板娘做主。她今天出门去了。你干几天就会知道。”
洗刷间的门开了，三个堂倌每人捧着一大摞脏盘子走进来。
