乔纳森·勒瑟姆（Jonathan Lethem，1964- ），1964年出生于纽约布鲁克林。年少时，他沉迷于鲍勃·迪伦的音乐，钟情于《星球大战》，读过菲利普·迪克的全部小说。1982年，勒瑟姆从本宁顿学院退学，怀揣四十美元，从科罗拉多搭便车穿越一千多里的荒漠与山岭，来到加利福尼亚。在加利福尼亚，他为一家二手书店工作，同时开始了他的文学写作。

醒来的时候它就在那儿了，我敢发誓。那种感觉。
自从我退出上个案子，不再替梅纳德·斯坦亨特办事，时间已经过了两个星期。没等我打开床头收音机，收听音乐阐释的新闻，我就已经有了这种感觉，但最后给予证实的还是音乐新闻：我又要工作了。案子即将上门。小提琴在合唱编曲中杀出血路，但一连串的上行连奏始终没有得到解决①，没有攀上顶峰，只是悄然淡出，但取而代之的依然是类似的玩意儿。这种曲调代表着麻烦，是某些私密和悲剧性的事情；无关政治，而是自杀或谋杀。
迫使我竖起耳朵的正是这类音乐新闻。现如今谋杀很少得到大肆宣扬。你通常只能在休闲场所喝酒时听见这种事，又或者是你自己在办案的过程中偶然遇见，然后就轮到你在酒吧里絮絮叨叨，向不敢相信你的听众讲述谋杀的故事。
小提琴数落着我。小提琴说我今天早晨该起床下楼去办公室。它们说有案子之类的东西在那儿等我。它们让我的钱包阵阵跳痛。
于是我沐浴刮脸，刷牙时刮破了牙龈，跌跌撞撞地走进厨房，想用滚烫的咖啡烙灼伤口。镜子仍旧平放着，我自己混合的药物摊在上头，每一条的量都很足，足够吸半鼻孔，形状像是双关节的白嫩手指。我拿起剃须刀片，把剩下的药品刮回蜡纸信封，拿袖子擦擦镜面。接着，我慢条斯理地煮咖啡。等折腾完毕，上午差不多就过完了。不过我还是下楼去了办公室。
我和一位牙医共用等候室。这个套房原先为两位精神分析师设计，比起我和牙医的客户，他们的客户恐怕更容易相处一些--想当年你得告诉别人你的问题就在于愤怒。我有时觉得这很讽刺，精神分析师多半希望让我这种人物停业，到头来结果却截然相反。
至于我本人，我实在没法想象去回答那些私人问题。我愿意打破提问的禁忌--事实上这正是我的工作--但扯到回答问题，我就只好敬谢不敏了。我不喜欢回答问题，就这么回事儿。
我匆忙地走过牙医的午间病患，进了自己那间办公室，放低衣领，松开脸上的讥笑表情。我差不多一周没来过了，但房间没有任何改变。灯光闪烁，家具底下的灰尘绒球随着我开门时的微风来回飘动。之所以看不见墙上的水迹，那是因为被我用椅子遮住了，但这并不妨碍我知道水迹就在那里。我把外套和帽子挂在弯腰驼背的帽架上，在办公桌前坐下。
我拿起电话，只是想听听是否还有拨号音，随后放下听筒：拨号音正常。我打开收音机，收听口述新闻，假设真有什么新闻的话。等到口述播音员捡起话头，初期播报的不谐和乐音往往已经平息，只给你留下几分不安的感觉：发生了什么事情，在某个时候，某个地方。

现在，这位金童搞得自己丢了小命。真是糟糕。死者曾经雇过我，这个巧合将会让异端调查局的人找我谈话。我对这种事情没什么胃口，但也并不特别恐惧。这种谈话多半马虎，因为调查员很可能已经锁定了嫌犯：要是没法把案子办成一场凯旋，他们是决计不会让案子传遍所有口述播报的新闻频道的。
基于同样的原因，我知道这里不会引出任何工作，太可惜了。异端调查局的探员会爬得到处都是，不会给我这种人留下足够的空间--前提是还得有客户委托。这案子破起来兴许只是举手之劳，更何况充当客户的那条可怜生魂多半本也罪孽深重。杀人会送你进冰箱，调查员若是认定某个家伙有罪，他距离冷库顶多不过几小时路程而已。
这不是我的问题。我换回音乐新闻。上头已经开始安抚平民，竖琴演奏七和弦当作背景舒缓人心，隆隆作响的大号代表正义的无情脚步。我放松下来，趴在桌上，音乐带着我睡去。
我不知道自己睡了多久，是牙医的说话声最后叫醒了我。
“麦特卡夫，快醒醒，”他第二次说道，“等候室里有位先生不是来洗牙的。”
牙医转身离开，留下我独自按摩下巴，它跟木制桌面有过一场狂虐式的短暂婚姻，这会儿失去了知觉。
