一个美好的夜晚，庶务官伊凡·德米特里·切尔维亚科夫心情愉悦，他在剧院第二排座椅上落座，手里捧着望远镜欣赏轻歌剧《哥纳维勒的钟》。他观看着演出，沉浸在无尽的幸福中。忽然之间……小说中不时出现“忽然之间”这个词。作家们对生活的观察极其细致入微：生活中的确穿插着各种意外事件。忽然之间，他的脸变得扭曲，眼睛向上翻，呼吸暂时停住……他把望远镜放下，低下头，接着……阿嚏一声！！！你们看，他打了个大喷嚏。不管是谁，无论何时何地，喷嚏都是难以被控制住的。人人都会打喷嚏：农民会打喷嚏，警官会打喷嚏，就算是达官贵人也不可避免。切尔维亚科夫显得很从容，他拿出小手绢拭了拭脸，并且礼貌地向周围张望：自己的喷嚏是不是喷到了谁？此刻他不由得慌了神，因为他发现，在他前面第一排座椅上坐着的一个身材矮小的老头，正不住地用手套擦拭自己的秃头和脖子，嘴里还嘟嘟囔囔的。切尔维亚科夫一眼便认出，这个小老头正是布里扎洛夫将军，他在交通部门任职，是三品文官。
切尔维亚科夫心想：“我的喷嚏喷到他身上了！尽管他不是我的顶头上司，而是其他部门的，但我这么做总归不合适，应该向他道个歉才好。”
切尔维亚科夫清了清嗓子，身子向前探，凑到将军耳旁，低声说：
“大人，十分对不起，我的喷嚏喷到您身上了……我不是故意的……”
“没关系，没关系……”
“看在上帝的面上，请您不要见怪。是真的……我并非故意……”
“唉，知道了！让我安静听戏吧！”
切尔维亚科夫一时不知所措，只是傻笑了一下，然后呆呆地看着舞台上的演出。此时他一点儿愉悦的心情都没有了，取而代之的是慌乱不安。幕间休息时，他特意来到布里扎洛夫面前，徘徊了一会儿后，终于鼓起勇气开口了：
“我喷到您了，大人……还请见谅……您知道……我并非故意的……”
“唉，够了！……我并没把这件事放在心上，您别总是提它啦！”将军说完，撇了一下嘴唇，很显然是不耐烦了。
“他嘴上说没放在心上，可眼里却露着凶光！”切尔维亚科夫一边思忖，一边偷偷看将军的表情，“他连话都不愿意跟我说了。我必须让他知道，我真的不是故意的……这是生理反应……要不然他会以为我是故意喷他的。就算他现在没这个想法，以后也一定会这么想……”
回到家中，切尔维亚科夫向妻子诉说了这件事。在这件事上，他觉得妻子的意见有点儿草率。妻子先是吓坏了，不过后来知道是“其他部门的”，就不把这件事当回事了。
“不过你最好专门去道一次歉，”她说，“否则将军会觉得你在公共场合的举止不妥当！”
“说得没错！刚才我极力道歉，但是他看上去怪怪的……连一句中听的话都没讲。当然也没工夫细讲。”
翌日，切尔维亚科夫特意穿上新制服，把脸刮干净，去向布里扎洛夫赔礼道歉……来到将军的接待室中，他发现这里除了将军，还有很多请求接见的人。将军接见了几个人后，把目光投向了切尔维亚科夫。
“如果将军还记得的话，昨日在‘阿尔卡吉亚’剧场，”切尔维亚科夫开始解释，“我无意中打了一个喷嚏，喷到了您……还请您别见怪……”
“别再废话了！……上帝晓得是怎么回事！”将军把脸扭过去，朝下一位来访的人说：“您的事是什么？”
“他不愿意听我解释！”切尔维亚科夫此时已经脸色苍白，心里暗道，“看来他已经在心里记恨我了。……这样可不行……我得再向他解释一番……”
当将军处理完最后一名来访者的事情后，转身往室内走，切尔维亚科夫紧走几步跟上去，吞吞吐吐地说：“将军大人！小人之所以来打扰您，完全是出于忏悔之心……我并非故意的，请您务必宽恕，将军大人！”
