《第三个人》是一个关于苦难和梦境，即沉沦和超越的故事。作者设置了沙漠中两个逃亡的囚犯，他们濒临绝境，渴望生存，原本应该不择手段，却又面临着良知的追踪和质问。最后，出于对同伴的负疚，他们放弃了逃亡和挣扎。小说探询了这样一个问题：在赤裸裸的生死之争面前，可不可能会有人的尊严和良知？苦难是否能够被超越，死亡是否有意义，有着过错和注定死亡的人，能否通过牺牲净化自己？在结尾处，那个作为少年犯的我，放弃了此世肉身的挣扎，却得到了来自彼岸的对灵魂的拯救，那只在弥留之际伸进被掩埋的洞穴中的手，来自‘第三个人’的手，就是良知的象征，拯救的象征。

Book Abstract

宋元“说话”中有一类名为“小说”，指的是话本中的短篇故事，与我们现今使用的概念相去甚远。我们说的“小说”，实际上是晚近的舶来品，可以说，是由欧洲的小说观念再命名的。
在欧洲，小说发展的道路与我国大体相似，即由神话而传奇而故事，由短篇而中篇而长篇。至十九世纪，长篇小说十分鼎盛，致使黑格尔断言极限来临。及世纪末，现代主义小说很快出现，传统的主题和写法被打破了。其实，十八世纪末以前，欧洲小说的体式已经相当完备，只是小说之名（novel）迟至此时才正式流行起来罢了。
几乎与此同时，有了中篇小说（novelette或novella）的名目。中篇小说是中型的叙事散文作品，一般而言，以篇幅的长短划界，但因此也就有了相当的弹性，需要把所叙的事件的规模、时间长度、结构的复杂与完整的程度同时作为参照。绥拉菲摩维奇的中篇《铁流》，论结构，可以算作长篇；莫泊桑的《俊友》本是中长篇，意大利作家莫拉维亚却是把它当作注水的短篇来看的。
四川人老简在很多年前跟随他所在的那股匪徒投诚加人了政府军，之后又随被遣散的部队来到茫茫林海中当了名林工。尽管已经年近四十，他人生的所有大举动都是“随部队”完成的，只有一次例外，就是这次进矿场。老简说他进矿场就是因为没有“随部队”的结果（他把所有听从指挥的集体行动都说成是“随部队”）。原来一年以前的春天，老简所在的林场安排大家去某个县城的剧院看戏，老简因为拉肚子掉了队，结果走错了剧院的大门。他没有走指定的西门，而是碰巧到了南门。在这座大门前也有许多人，也停了许多辆卡车，但这些人和这些车不是进去看演出的，而是送流放犯下矿场的。在场的有犯人、押送的看守们还有送别犯人的家属，这种场面免不了哭哭泣泣拉拉扯扯，于是一场混乱就发生了。老简看到看守们正把一个和妻子相拥而泣的人往车上推，在挣扎中那人的行李掉在了地上，老简纯粹是出于本能上前一步拿起了地上的行李——就在这一瞬间，他被好几只手揪住，送上了那辆注定将他带往不归之路的命运之车。事后老简几乎是日日夜夜不停地反省，在一系列的追溯反省的终点他把原因锁定到一只身份可疑的野兔身上。事情是这样的：按照以往的习惯和场里的规定，四川人老简总是在林场食堂“随部队”吃饭的，可有一天傍晚，一个好朋友邀请他去附近农民家吃一只自己刚刚偷猎到的野兔，他不假思索就答应了。

在中国，“小说”一词使用已久，最早见于继子，《汉书·艺文志》说是“小说家者流，盖出于稗官；街谈巷语，道听涂说之所造也”。小说的雏形是神话传说的简略记录，后来发展到《搜神记》一类志怪小说和《世说新语》一类志人小说，结构都很简单。及至出现唐人传奇，宋元话本，小说乃由粗具梗概变得枝繁叶茂起来。鲁迅指出：“是时则始有意为小说”，就是说，小说创作的自觉意识直到这时方始建立，结果是：小说有了中篇的规模，题材有所拓展，最突出的是情节性大大加强，而语言也趋于通俗，更富于表现力。明初《三国演义》、《水浒传》的制作，标志着古典小说趋向成熟；随着清代《红楼梦》的出现，达致巅峰状态。盛极而衰，紧接着，变革时代也就适时而至了。
