《海明威短篇小说集》是海明威的短篇小说集，收录了《老人与海》、《乞力马扎罗的雪》等11部海明威最脍炙人口的作品。《老人与海》讲述了古巴老渔夫桑提亚哥在连续八十四天没捕到鱼的情况下，终于独自钓上了一条大马林鱼，但这条鱼实在太大，把他的小船在海上拖了三天才筋疲力尽，被他杀死，并绑在小船的一边，在归程中一再遭到鲨鱼的袭击，回港时只剩下鱼头鱼尾和一条脊骨。这虽然是一个故事简单、篇幅不大的作品，但含义丰富，很多教师把它作为英雄主义教育的教材，推荐给广大学生，使之成为经久不衰的畅销书。
本作品一经出版就得到了评论家们一致好评，使海明威获得了1953年度的普利策奖和1954年度的诺贝尔文学奖。本书所选的11部短篇小说也是他所有短篇小说中的精华。

Author Description

海明威（Ernest Hemingway l899～1961），美国小说家。1954年度的诺贝尔文学奖获得者。生于乡村医生家庭，从小喜欢钓鱼、打猎、音乐和绘画，曾作为红十字会车队司机参加第一次世界大战，以后长期担任驻欧记者，并曾以记者身份参加第二次世界大战和西班牙内战。晚年患多种疾病，精神十分抑郁，经多次医疗无效，终用猎枪自杀。他的早期长篇小说《太阳照样升起》（1927）、《永别了，武器》（1927）成为表现美国"迷惘的一代"的主要代表作。30、40年代他转而塑造摆脱迷惘、悲观，为人民利益而英勇战斗和无畏牺牲的反法西斯战士形象（剧本《第五纵队》1938），长篇小说《丧钟为谁而鸣》（1940）。50年代后，他继续发展20年代短篇小说《打不败的人》和《五万大洋》的宁折不弯主题，塑造了以桑提亚哥为代表的"可以把他消灭，但就是打不败他"的"硬汉性格"（代表作中篇小说《老人与海》 1950）。在艺术上，他那简约有力的文体和多种现代派手法的出色运用，在美国文学中曾引起过一场"文学革命"，许多欧美作家都明显受到了他的影响。

老人与海
他是一位孤独的老人，每日摇着一只小船，独自在墨西哥湾捕鱼。整整八十四天，他一无所获。头四十天，有个男孩跟他在一起。四十天后，他们一条鱼都没有抓到，男孩的父母把男孩叫了回去，告诉他说，这个老头现在是个彻头彻尾的“倒霉蛋”，也就是说，倒霉到了极点。父母安排男孩跟另一条船下海，男孩顺从地去了，结果第一个星期就抓到三条大鱼。男孩看着老人每天摇着空船回来，心里很难受，总是跑下岸，帮他把盘好的钓绳、拖钩、渔叉和卷在桅杆上的帆布往回搬。老人的帆布上缝着几个补丁,用以遮盖破洞，整个卷拢之后，就像一面永远打不了胜仗的败军之旗。
老人枯瘦而憔悴，脖颈后面有几道深深的“沟壑”。两腮有一些褐色斑块，那是热带海洋反射的阳光，照在脸上形成的良性皮肤癌。斑块一直向下蔓延，布满了两颊。他那双长年累月拉网、打渔的双手，勒出了几道深深的疤痕，疤痕上布满了裂口，没有一块是新落下的，它们就像干涸的沙漠经受过风蚀一样古老。
老人浑身上下都显得十分古朴，唯独那双眼睛，透着年轻的气息，像海水一样蔚蓝，流露出欢快、不服输的神情。
他们把小船泊在沙滩上，径直爬上堤岸，这时，男孩说道：“桑提亚哥，我又可以跟你下海了，我在那条船上挣了点儿钱。”
老人以前教过男孩打渔，男孩打心眼里敬佩他。
“不行，你现在跟的是一条幸运船，你就待在那里，哪儿也别去。”老人说道。
“可是，你不记得了？有一次，你整整八十七天没抓到一条鱼，结果在后来的三个星期里，咱们天天都能抓到大鱼。”
“当然记得，”老人说，“我也知道，你不是因为对我没信心而离开我。”
“是爸爸叫我走的，我还是个孩子，必须听他的。”
“我知道，这是人之常情。”老人说。
“他没有信心。”
“是啊，可是咱们有信心，对不对？”老人说。
“对，那我可以请你到露台餐馆喝点儿酒吗？喝完咱们带着这些家什回家。”男孩说。
“当然可以啦。两个打鱼的去喝酒喽。”老人说。
他们坐在露台餐馆喝酒，不少渔夫都在拿老人寻开心，老人也不生气。那些年迈的渔夫们看着他，都觉得很悲哀，但是并没有流露出来，只是彬彬有礼地聊洋流，聊自己能把鱼线送进大海多深，聊这些日子的好天气，聊他们的所见所闻。当天打鱼得手的渔夫们都已经回家了，他们把枪鱼开膛破肚，平铺在两条厚木板上，四个人分别抬着木板一角，摇摇晃晃地走向鱼仓，在那里等冷藏车把这些鱼运往哈瓦那市场。捕到鲨鱼的人把它们运到海湾对岸的鲨鱼加工厂，用滑车把鲨鱼吊起来，去除肝脏，切掉鱼鳍，剥去鱼皮，再把鱼肉切片准备腌制。
刮东风的时候，一股腥味儿会从鲨鱼加工厂吹过海湾，但是今天的味道有点儿淡，因为东风转成北风了，现在差不多停了。没有熏人的腥臭味儿，坐在露台餐馆，喝着小酒，晒着太阳，甚是惬意。
“桑提亚哥。”男孩叫道。
“嗯？”老人应道，他手里抓着酒杯，沉浸在对陈年往事的追忆中。
“明天我去给你抓些沙丁鱼，怎么样？”
“不用了，你去打棒球吧，我还有力气划船，罗吉里奥也能帮我撒网。”
“我想去。要是不能跟你一起打鱼，替你做点儿别的事也行啊。”
“你请我喝酒了呀，”老人说，“你已经是个男子汉了。”
“我第一次跟你出海的时候有多大？”
“五岁，你差点儿送了命。那天我抓了一条活蹦乱跳的大鱼，它跳得太猛了，差点儿把船捣碎，你还记得不？”
“我记得鱼尾巴啪啪地拍着船板。你把我丢到船头一堆湿漉漉的索绳中间，整条船晃个不停，你抡起木棒砰砰地打鱼，像在砍树一样，腥甜的鱼血溅了我一身。”
“你是真记得这回事，还是后来听我说的？”
“从咱们第一次出海起，我什么事都记得一清二楚。”
老人用那双被太阳晒伤的眼睛坚定而慈爱地看着男孩。
“如果你是我儿子，我真想带你出去赌一把，”他说，“可你是你父母的儿子，更何况，你现在又跟着一条交了好运的船。”
“我去给你拿些沙丁鱼吧？我还知道哪儿能搞到四条鱼饵呢。”
“今天我还剩下一些，放在盒子里腌上了。”
“我再去给你弄四条新鲜的吧。”
“那就一条吧。”老人说。他从来没有放弃过希望。现在，他的信心更足了，就像微风拂面，让人充满活力。
“两条。”男孩说道。
“两条就两条，”老人同意了，“不是偷的吧？”
“我倒想偷呢，”男孩说，“不过这几条都是我买的。”
“谢谢你啦。”老人说道。他很憨厚，没去琢磨自己什么时候变得谦和有礼了。但他知道自己已经变了，而且，他知道这并不丢脸，也不会没面子。
“快看这股洋流，明天一定是个好天气。”
“你打算去哪儿？”
“走远点儿，等风转向就回来。我打算天不亮就出门。”
“我要劝船主也到远处撒网，”男孩说，“等你钓到大家伙的时候，我们可以过去搭把手。”
“他不怎么喜欢到远处打鱼。”
“是啊。”男孩说，“可我能看到他看不到的东西，比如觅食的鸟儿，这样我就可以叫他去追海豚。”
“他的眼睛那么不中用啊？”
“他快瞎了。”
“真奇怪，”老人说，“他可从来不捉海龟，那玩意儿才伤眼睛呢。”
“可是你整年都在莫斯基托海岸 ①捉海龟，眼睛也好好的啊。”
“我是个怪老头儿。”
“要是捉到一条老大老大的鱼，你的力气还够使吗？”
“我觉得能行。再说了，捉鱼还有很多窍门儿呢。”
“咱们把家什拿回家吧，”男孩说，“我要去拿网捞沙丁鱼。”
他们捡起船上的用具。老人扛着桅杆，男孩抱起一卷编得结结实实的褐色钓索和带把儿的拖钩、渔叉。老人将装鱼饵的箱子和木棒都藏在船尾，每次钩住大鱼，他就拖到船尾，用这根木棒制服它。没人会偷老人的家什，但最好还是把船帆和这捆沉甸甸的绳子带回家，整夜泡在露水里可不好，再说了，虽然老人知道本地人铁定不会偷他的东西，但他觉得，没必要把拖钩、渔叉丢在船上白白诱惑人行窃。
他们一老一小，一路上坡，来到老人的小棚屋前，径直走进敞开的小门。老人把桅杆和裹在一块儿的帆布靠在墙上，男孩把箱子和其他家什挨着船帆放到一边。桅杆差不多跟这间小棚屋一般高。小棚屋是用俗称“海鸟粪”的大王椰子树护芽硬壳搭建的，里面摆着一张床、一张桌子和一把椅子，泥地上留出一块儿炭火煮饭的地方。“海鸟粪”的纤维很坚韧，小棚屋棕色的墙壁就是把这种叶子捋平后交叠而成的。墙上还挂着彩色的“耶稣圣心图”和“科布雷圣母像”，这些都是他妻子的遗物。墙上原本还挂着他妻子的着色照片，后来他取下了，因为整天对着照片让他觉得特别孤独。他把照片放在屋角的架子上，用一件干净的衬衫盖着。
“有什么吃的吗？”男孩问道。
“黄米饭，就着鱼吃。要不要来点儿？”
“不要，我待会儿回家吃。我给你生火吧？”
“不用了，我一会儿自己弄，吃冷饭也行。”
“我用一下渔网，行吗？”
“当然可以。”
其实根本没有什么渔网，男孩还记得他们是什么时候把渔网卖掉的。但是，他们每天都会这么想象一番。没有什么黄米饭，也没有什么鱼，这男孩也知道。
“85是个吉利的数字，”老人说，“要是我捞到一条大家伙，挖肠去肚，还剩一千多磅，那你该有多喜欢呀？”
“我先拿渔网去捞沙丁鱼。你坐在门口晒会儿太阳吧！”
“好。我有昨天的报纸，待会儿我要看看棒球新闻。”
男孩不知道昨天的报纸会不会也是虚构的。不过，老人确实从床底下掏出一张报纸。
“佩里克在杂货店里给我的。”他解释说。
“我捞了沙丁鱼就回来。我把你的和我的都放在冰上镇着，明天早上再分。等我回来，你跟我说说棒球比赛的新闻。”
