Author Description

所罗门•诺瑟普（Solomon Northup），美国黑人作家，废奴主义者，当过小提琴手、木匠，1808 年在纽约密涅瓦出生，1864 年至1875 年间去世。1853 年，所罗门根据自己的奴隶经历而作的《为奴十二年》在美国一经出版，即引发轰动性反响，有力推进了废奴运动，再版数十次。书中对奴隶制的描写、对善恶人性的刻画引人深思，所罗门对信念的不懈坚持更是感动了无数读者。1999 年7 月24 日，所罗门的众多子孙聚集在所罗门生活过的萨拉托加矿泉城，对祖先表达敬意。为了缅怀所罗门及其他身为奴隶的非裔美国人，萨拉托加矿泉城宣布7 月24 日为所罗门•诺瑟普日。2014 年，《为奴十二年》的同名改编电影夺得奥斯卡、金球奖多个奖项，所罗门与他的故事也拂去历史尘埃，重新成为人们关注的焦点。

Book Abstract

我出生时是个自由人，三十多年来一直在一个非蓄奴州享受着自由的生活，这一切因我被绑架并被卖为奴而忽然中断，直到1853 年1 月才幸被解救，在这期间我过了十二年的奴隶生活。可能公众会对我的这番浮沉经历有很大的兴趣。

自从我重获自由，我注意到北方各州对奴隶制的热议有增无减。大量小说以前所未有之势出版，纷纷描述其吸引力和罪恶，就我所了解，这些作品也带来了大量讨论。

我对奴隶制的见解仅限于我个人的观察和亲身经历。我的目的就是要真实呈现事实，讲述我的经历，不加渲染，让读者自己来评判，是否小说能呈现出比我的经历更残酷的罪恶或更严酷的奴役。

就我所能查证的，我的家世最远只能追溯到我的祖父辈们，他们是罗德岛的奴隶，属于一个叫诺瑟普的家族，他们中的一支搬到了纽约州，在伦斯勒县的一个叫胡西克的地方定居了下来，我的父亲明图斯•诺瑟普也被带到了这个地方。这家的主人去世时，他在他的遗嘱里给了我父亲自由，那大概是五十年前的事情了。
