老画家吉米逊由于其“赞助人”希克森的陷害而入狱。出狱后妻离子散，无家可归，只有河边一间旧船棚栖身。他负债累累，过着衣不蔽体、饥寒交迫的生活，但出狱后，念念不忘的仍然是他的艺术创作，是一幅取名为《堕落》、尚未完稿的画。他沉醉于构思之中，刻意创新，追求新的表现形式、艺术风格，不粗制滥造，不崇尚时髦，不奉迎时风，一心追求真正的艺术。生活对他很不公平，他像一匹马，让“赞助人”任意驾驭、欺压。他的“赞助人”希克森以极小的代价购去他大量的艺术珍品，甚至趁他坐牢之际，将他剩下的几十幅价值几万英镑的作品全部掠去抵偿所欠区区几百英镑的债务。他为此十分气愤，甚至打过电话威胁希克森要烧掉他房子，干掉他。但那不过是泄泄愤而已。他无能为力，也不屑过问，一心只想到自己的创作。甚至，当不时接济他的酒吧间女侍者科克尔拉他去前妻处讨还一些绘画时，只有科克尔一人作无望的努力，他自己似是局外人。后来，实在为生活所迫，来到前“赞助人”希克森家论理，希克森表面上答应接济他，一面却打电话找警察，再次将他送进牢狱。再度出来时，他那座烂船棚也被人占去了。他被迫流落街头，住进类似贫民窟的三等鸡毛旅店，甚至和始终追随他学绘画的一位学子在一个滂沱大雨的夜晚被迫野外露宿。但他依然一心追求美术的崇高境界。后来，由于偶然机会，他复制了一幅以前创作的《沐浴图》，卖给富人威廉，得到一些钱，马上动手创作一幅构思己久的、具有划时代意义的大型油画《鲸》。吉米逊和他的助手日夜加班，但由于上了年纪，身体又有病，加上精神刺激，终于从高架子摔下来，为艺术献出了生命。

是了，我想道，麻烦在于那样一条腿，它伸出来了。就像小提琴演奏时加入一支小号。小号本身毫无意义，了不起算是舞台下面有人打了声喷嚏。要是在左上角打上黄铜色，右下角也只好这样着色。事实上是指夏娃涂上这种色彩。那样她就会从画布里跳出来，进人马房啦。让她安身的唯一办法是将蛇头变成猩红色的。
那就成了红玉石，血色的，大了一倍。可这全然不对劲啊。蛇的头得是白色的，有双蔚蓝色的眼睛。反正是种体会，我是这么看的。等着瞧吧。我走过去将贮藏箱打开，里面贮放了颜料、画笔之类。挂锁好好的，只是一打开盖子，又大吃了一惊。有人从船棚外部拆了点木板子，将里面东西一扫而光，什么也没留下，就剩下一听香烟。嗨！我想道，这挺正常么。颜料、画笔放在娃娃们伸手能及的地方，你就无法不让这些东西移动一下。娃娃都爱好艺术。天生的呐。
情况依然滑稽可笑。我心想道，鄙人，盖里·吉米逊，所作的画被国家收藏，或是在克里斯蒂艺术馆由百万富翁以区区几百英镑的代价购去，实际上是窃取我的，而我却竟然没有一枝画笔、一管颜料，更不用说一顿饭、一双好靴子了。这纯粹是禁止我干活么。足可以让那些承办丧事的微笑了。
接着，我在厄拉姆街来回走动借以取暖时，又想道，何必怨·天尤人。那会坏事。我得保持镇静。事实上还是明智些好，对一位天生的傻瓜尤其如此。我务必不要夸大其词。国家只要了一幅画，而且是我自愿捐赠的，很可能并不想要。只有一位百万富翁收购了我的东西。人家冒了亏本的风险呐。还可能他远远谈不上是位百万富翁呢。我又有什么理由好发火的。其实，我没得鸡眼，也没得拇囊肿，还该感谢上帝呢。
这当儿我发觉来到了一间电话亭。我想，是习惯使然。我从来不会经过一间空闲的电话亭而不进去揿按钮B。按钮B常常对我很友善。这回没什么事要说，不过是一个念头。我有几个铜币，便拨了波特兰街区。我将一支铅笔塞在上下牙齿之间，然后说找希克逊先生。年轻的男管家接了电话，那声音就像一只阄了的公鸡。“阁下是谁？”“皇家艺术院院长。”“好的，先生，请稍等。”接着便传过来希克逊哼哼叽叽的话音，就像一位破了产的、患有牙病的牙科医师。“在下希克逊。”我将跟前的铅笔衔好，发出火鸡般的咯咯咯声音，“希克逊先生，鄙人获悉，你占有声名卓著的盖里·吉米逊先生的十九幅油画以及三百幅左右的素描。”
