茅盾（1896-1981），原名沈德鸿，字雁冰，浙江嘉兴桐乡人，中国现代著名作家、文学评论家和社会活动家，五四新文化运动先驱者之一。代表作有长篇小说《虹》《蚀》《腐蚀》《子夜》《霜叶红似二月花》等。中短篇小说《春蚕》《林家铺子》《诗与散文》《石碣》《手的故事》等。散文《白杨礼赞》《青年苦闷的分析》《冬天》《雷雨前》《谈月亮》《天窗》等。

一
凡是公务员，都盼望星期六早早来到。铁路局公务员的陶祖泰却是例外。
天气太好。办公厅窗外一丛盛开的夹竹桃在和风中点头，自然是朝窗里的专等“下班”铃响的公务员们，陶祖泰也在内。温和的天气，笑开了的夹竹桃，都是大公无私的，然而陶祖泰觉得夹竹桃只对他一人点头，而且这点头是嘲笑的意味。
离开“下班”钟点大约二十多分，科长先走了，办公厅里就紧张起来：收拾公文，开了又关了抽屉，穿大褂，找帽子，摸出表来看了一遍又一遍，打电话约朋友，低声（夹着短促的笑音）商量着吃馆子呢还是看电影，——个个人都为“周末”而兴奋，只有陶祖泰惘然坐在那里，为了“周末”而烦恼。
他最后一个踱出了办公厅，心里横着两个念头；怕回家去，然而又不放心家里。这是他近来每逢星期六必有的心绪，他承认自己的能力已经无法解决这个矛盾的心理。
除了星期六，他在同事们中间是最有“家庭幸福”的：夫人年青，相貌着实过得去，性情也是好的，孩子只有一个，五六岁，不淘气。三等科员的收入原好像太少一点儿，可是夫人有一份不算怎么小的“陪嫁”，逢到意外开支，她从不吝啬。因此，除了星期六，这位年青的丈夫是极恋家的，他总是第一个把公文收好，守候“下班”铃响，第一个跑出办公厅，一直线赶回家去。到家以后呢，“左顾孺人，右弄稚子”，他不喜欢汉口的热闹，而汉口的热闹也从不来干涉他。
斜阳照着蜿蜒北去的铁轨，像黄绿夹杂布上的两条银线。他不知怎么走了这和家去相反的路。他还没觉得。眼怔怔望着那铁轨，忽然想起七八年前他有一位同学在铁路轨道上自杀。他用脚尖踢着铁轨旁边的枕木，摇了摇头。他的中学校的同学，有好几位是企图过自杀的；他们以为自杀是高尚而又勇敢的行为；高尚，因为一个人自己觉得会阻碍了别人（尤其是亲爱者）的幸福时，自杀是最彻底的牺牲；而能作彻底的牺牲者，自然是勇敢的。陶祖泰也抱有这信念。他也曾企图过两次的自杀。第一次在结婚以前，但这一次他事后是颇悔惭的，因为并非为了什么“积极的理想”，只是感到生活无味。结婚以后他又有第二次的“企图”，然而朋友们把他救了转来时，他忽然感激了朋友。他说，他在吞下了安眠药片以后就猛省到他的自杀的动机还是不够高尚，为的他之企图自杀实在是感到能力不够，不能使他所亲爱的人有幸福，他想要“逃避”他的责任。
是这第二次“自我批评”以后，他努力找职业，而且努力学习“和光同尘”的处世哲学。半年前他到汉口的铁路局办事，在他职业纪录中已经是第四次的变化。
他眼怔怔望着那远接天边的发亮的铁轨，他脑子里闪电似的飞过了种种的往事，特别是那第二次的自杀企图；他轻轻地摇着头，便反身沿着铁轨走回去。他愈走愈快了，不多一会儿便和铁轨分手，一直回家去。现在是“不放心家里”的意念压倒了“怕回家去”，——应当说，“责任”的观念压倒了“逃避”的意识。

因为走得太急了，陶祖泰到家时心跳气促，开不来口。孩子跳到他身边，抱了他的大腿，唤着“爸爸”，他也顺不过气来应一声，只是用手摩着孩子的头。半晌，他这才挣扎出一句话来：
“妈妈呢？”
孩子还没回答，陶祖泰一眼早看见壁头的衣钩上没有了夫人那件新制的蓝绸披肩，他颓然叹一口气，拉着孩子的手，想要坐下，却又不坐，伛着腰，轻声的，似乎不愿意出口，问道：
“那个——朱……先生，教书的朱先生，来过么？”
孩子仰脸看着他爸爸，一对小眼睛睁得滚圆；爸爸的脸色太难看，爸爸的声音也太怪样，他害怕，他把脸扑在爸爸身上。
陶祖泰拍着孩子的背，放和顺了口音说：
“哎，孩子！”
“爸爸。妈妈，隔壁黄伯伯家里，打牌；”孩子露出脸来，又看着他父亲了。“妈妈说，买一个洋泡泡，给宝宝，等爸爸回来，同去买。”
陶祖泰勉强笑了笑，一声不响，抱起孩子来，就走出去了。
他抱着孩子，就到隔壁黄家。刚走进那阴湿的小院子，就听得“男和女杂”的笑声夹着牌响。他忽然打了一个寒噤，他忽然想道：“随她去罢，——随他们去罢：自家又何苦去受刑罚。”可是他依然朝前走，不知不觉却在两臂上加了劲，惹得怀里的孩子怪不舒服。
狭长的旧式边厢。开亮了电灯，照着四张红喷喷亮油油的面孔。陶祖泰刚挨身进去，第一眼就看见坐在他夫人对面的，正是那位当教员的朱先生。然而第一眼看见陶祖泰进来的，却是那位半个后身对着厢房门的黄太太；她似乎要避开台面上的某种手和手的举动，把脸一别，可就看见了陶祖泰了。
