《崇祯皇帝上·北京戒严》：
崇祯十一年十月，清兵再次入侵，北京戒严。对清是和是战，朝内两派尖锐对立，在崇祯对内“剿贼”对外求和的暗示下，杨嗣昌、高起潜对卢象升事事掣肘，使力主抗清的卢象升，在既无援兵又无粮草的情况下，抱着必死的决心，在河北巨鹿同数倍于己的清兵血战中壮烈殉国。
同年冬，李自成在陕西潼关陷入洪承畴、孙传庭所率明军的重围，一场血战，几乎全军覆没，李自成妻女俱失，最后，仅率十八骑兵逃脱，潜入商洛山中。次年端午前后，张献忠按照事先对李自成的承诺，在湖北谷城重举义旗，震动朝野。
在内乱外患中，大局日益糜烂，崇祯忧心如焚，陷入焦躁、失望、悲怆、孤独、痛苦之中，暴露出多疑、专断、刚复、自信、诿过、冷酷等个性特点。
崇祯十二年秋，崇祯力排众议，派辅臣杨嗣昌出京督师，对“剿贼”成功给予厚望。他先在宫中召见，赐宴、赐诗、赐尚方宝剑，还让满朝文武大臣在广宁门外为他饯行。杨抵襄阳后立即部署，督促各路明军围剿农民军。

《崇祯皇帝下·魂断煤山》：
进入甲申年，清朝势力日盛，辅政亲王多尔衮具有雄才大略，倚重洪承畴、范文程等降清大臣，关注关内时局变化，密议南下方略。
崇祯十六年十月，李自成破潼关，进入西安，定国号为大顺。十七年正月初三，李自成率大军渡黄河，入山西，破太原，过大同，一路所向披靡，直逼北京。在大顺军逼近之初，崇祯从陆路、海路都有逃往南京的时间，是坚守北京，还是逃往南京，反反复复，当断不断，就在他和大臣们议而不决、议而不定之时，大顺军包围了京城，彻底失去了南逃的机会。在即将破城时刻，崇祯命太监护送太子、永定二王出城逃命，说明在明朝覆灭前夕，崇祯对朱明王朝死灰复燃尚抱有一线希望。同时，下副司后、袁妃自尽，亲手劈杀公主和幼女。在极度悲愤、绝望中只有太监王承恩一人陪着，在煤山自缢。明朝灭亡。

《崇祯皇帝中·紫禁城内外》
当农民军被围困于鄂西时，崇祯自己也被层层围困于紫禁城中，苦撑危局。因连年灾荒和战乱，国库空虚，为筹措军饷，他不得不向勋戚借助，首先从武清侯李国瑞开刀，李坚不借银，由此引发了宫廷内外一场错综复杂的斗争。五岁的五皇子、首辅薛国观等多人在这场斗争中死去。田妃也因帮李家说了一句话而遭“严谴”，送入冷宫。崇祯乃以借助失败告终。
崇祯十三年初夏，李自成冲出武关，进鄂西，继入豫，义军迅速发展壮大。十四年正月，破洛阳杀福王。张（献忠）罗（汝才）联军奇袭襄阳，杀襄王。杨嗣昌以“剿贼”失败告终，在绝望、自负、恐惧中于沙市服毒自尽。从此，农民战争又进入新的高潮。
崇祯十四年，皇太极统率清兵围攻锦州。洪承畴奉旨率十三万大军出关，援救锦州。原想等待时机，稳扎稳打，但崇祯连连下旨，逼他出兵，结果，部分官兵临阵脱逃，导致全军崩溃。洪退守松山堡。崇祯十五年二月，清兵攻入松山堡，洪承畴被俘。崇祯自信洪会为朝廷尽忠，亲自修改祭文，赐祭九坛，就在此时，得到洪降清的确讯，惊惧、失望、悔恨、恼怒搅在一起，立即下旨停祭。
李自成破洛阳杀福王后，崇祯越来越清楚，李自成非一般流贼，须全力对付。为避免两面用兵，崇祯暗中促使对清议和的进行。不料议和条款泄漏，满朝哗然，迫使崇祯杀陈新甲，以推卸责任。

第1章
崇祯十一年1十月初三日晚上，约摸一更天气，北京城里已经静街，显得特别的阴森和凄凉。重要的街道口都站着兵丁，盘查偶尔过往的行人。家家户户的大门外都挂着红色的或白色的纸灯笼，灯光昏暗，在房檐下摇摇摆摆。在微弱的灯光下，可以看见各街口的墙壁上贴着大张的、用木版印刷的戒严布告。在又窄又长的街道和胡同里，时常有更夫提着小灯笼，敲着破铜锣或梆子，瑟缩的影子出现一下，又向黑暗中消逝；那缓慢的、无精打采的锣声或梆子声也在风声里逐渐远去。
城头上非常寂静，每隔不远有一盏灯笼。由于清兵已过了通州的运河西岸，所以东直门和朝阳门那方面特别吃紧，城头上的灯笼也比较稠密。城外有多处火光，天空映成了一片紫色。从远远的东方，不时地传过来隆隆炮声，好像夏天的闷雷一样在天际滚动。但是城里的居民们得不到战事的真实情况，不知道这是官兵还是清兵放的大炮。
从崇祯登极以来，十一年中，清兵已经四次入塞，三次直逼北京城下。所以尽管东城外炮声隆隆，火光冲天，城内有兵马巡逻，禁止宵行，但深宅大院中仍然过着花天酒地的生活。那些离皇城较近的府第中，为着怕万一被宫中听见，在歌舞侑酒时不用锣鼓，甚至不用丝竹，只让歌妓用紫檀或象牙拍板轻轻地点着板眼，婉转低唱。有时歌声细得像一丝头发，似有似无，袅袅不断，在彩绘精致的屋梁上盘旋，然后向神秘的太空飞去。主人和客人们停杯在手，脚尖儿在地上轻轻点着，注目静听，几乎连呼吸也停顿下来。歌喉一停，他们频频点头称赏，快活地劝酒让菜，猜枚划拳。他们很少人留意城外的炮声和火光，更没人去想一想应该向朝廷献一个什么计策，赶快把清兵打退。倒是那些住宿在太庙后院中古柏树上和煤山的松树上的仙鹤，被炮声惊得不安，时不时成群飞起，在紫禁城和东城的上空盘旋，发出来凄凉的叫声。
北京城里的灾民和乞丐本来就多，两天来又从通州和东郊逃进来十几万人，没处收容，有很多人睡在街两旁的屋檐底下，为着害怕冻死，挤做一堆。
