Author Description

莱斯利·唐纳，英国作家，迷恋日本文化，曾在日本居住了十五年，写了很多关于日本的书，并参与了英国第四频道、英国广播公司以及日本放送协会关于日本的电视节目制作。代表作品有《艺伎——消逝世界的秘密历史》《川上贞奴——诱惑了西方的艺伎》等。《末代王妃》是她的第一部小说。

《末代王妃》：
但是幸子有个最紧迫的工作。每当有队伍经过，次郎右卫门都会到村子入口迎接大名，之后他会跑回客栈的门廊，在那里轿子停下，再次欢迎大名。但是公主的话会有些问题。首先，她是个女人；此外，她是这个国家最高贵最重要的女人。不能设想任何人，最不必说像他这样身份低下的客栈老板，能对地位如此之高的女性看上一眼。随着日子越来越近，次郎右卫门也越来越焦虑。负责运输的长官没有屈尊给他任何建议，最后他自己打定主意：像往常一样迎接公主的轿子，但是和自己的老婆、女儿一起。他的家庭毕竟一度是武士，他们毕竟比其他的村民高出一等。
幸子穿上妈妈为她准备的新年穿的崭新靛蓝色和服。奶奶纺纱，妈妈织出明暗相间的格子图案，又在袖子的一角缝出一个袋子装幸子的护身符。幸子将她特别的梳子放进同一只袖子，在腰上围上红色绉绸的宽腰带。之后她挨着妈妈跪在留给贵客的大门旁边。
次郎右卫门的客栈在村子中间，不过和道路还有一段距离，远远离开那些嘈杂与喧嚣，藏在一堵高墙之后。入口里面还有第二道墙，保护他尊贵的客人避开村民和旅行者粗俗的窥视。幸子能听见外面路上让大地震动的脚步声，也能看见墙头露出来的随队伍前进的枪尖、旗帜和大红阳伞。除了人的脚步和牲畜的蹄子造成的滚滚雷声，以及不停的呼唤声：“行礼哟！行礼哟！行礼……行……”这里是完全的寂静，没有人说一句话。
一些人突然出现在客栈墙壁周围。幸子稍稍扭过身子抬起头，正好能偷看到接下来发生什么。有一列脚夫的队伍围绕在后门附近，他们露着半边屁股，脸上的汗水亮晶晶的，拖着水桶、食物篮子、闪亮上漆的箱子，还有一个华丽的金黑两色橱子，大得足够装下一个浴缸。粗壮的汉子穿着多层的短和服，绑着绑腿，戴着尖尖的稻草帽，带着两把武士刀，在门廊附近站定位置，跟随的脚夫扛着发亮的黑色长凳。
之后一座轿子停在入口门廊那里。一个女人走出来，滑出一只小巧的脚，又滑出另外一只，穿上早已放在长凳上的一双木屐。越来越多的轿子停下来，每个里面都出来一个女人，彼此用尖尖的调子低声问候。对幸子来说，她们的声音和鸟儿的颤音、啼啭没有区别，完全听不懂。门廊里满是花瓣般柔软而精致的衣服，就像春天的草地一样多姿多彩。空气里的香味甜美浓郁，她感觉自己都要眩晕了。她越发大胆了，看了又看。她从未见过这样精致的人，这是另外一个世界，比她的所有梦想都要灿烂华美。

侍从拉开轿门，虚幻的金色之中出现了一个女人。她的和服有一层层精细的橘色、金色和绿色，在脖子和手腕的地方清晰可见。她戴着一顶市女笠，厚厚的面纱垂到肩膀。但当走下来时，她抬起一只雪白的手撩开了面纱，幸子在面纱重新落下之前看见了她的脸。
幸子迅速地低下头。她不知道自己在期待什么，而实际上，她怎么敢期待些什么呢。她已经期待了公主那么长时间，她期待看到些美好的东西，但是感到的却是迷惑和糊涂。她刚才看到的脸不应当属于公主——不应当属于她自己想象中的公主。
