企业组织按其提供给顾客的产品类型分类。
1.服务型公司（service companies）为顾客提供服务。一些服务型公司提供法律、会计、医疗或银行等需要大量专业知识的服务；另一些则提供一些私人服务，诸如割草、换油、剪发、粉刷、安装水管或清洁的服务。布洛克公司（H&R Block）、美洲银行（Bankof America）、捷飞络（Jiffy Lude）以及梅丽少女公司（Merry Maids）等公司都是服务型公司。
2.商业型公司（merchandise companies），也称做零售公司（retail companies），指出售其他公司制造的产品的企业。商业型公司的例子包括沃尔玛、西尔斯（Sears）、亚马逊和哈德瓦公司（Ace Hardware 0许多这样的公司都持有大量的待售商品，如玩具“反”斗城（Toys“R”Us）。
