《莎士比亚十四行诗》大约创作于1590年至1598年之间，其诗作的结构技巧和语言技巧极高，每首诗都有独立的审美价值。其全部154首诗都集中歌颂了爱情、友谊与真善美。在英国乃至世界十四行诗的创作中，莎士比亚十四行诗是一座高峰。
十四行诗是源于意大利民间的一种抒情短诗，文艺复兴初期时盛行于整个欧洲，其结构十分严谨，分为上下两部分，上段为八行，下段为六行，每行十一个音节，韵脚排列：abba abba cdc ded。莎士比亚的十四行诗的结构却更严谨，他将十四个诗行分为两部分，第一部分为三个四行，第二部分为两行，每行十个音节，韵脚为：ababcdcd efef gg。这样的格式后来被称为“莎士比亚式”或“伊丽莎白式”。对诗人而言，诗的结构越严谨就越难抒情，而莎士比亚以惊人的艺术表现力得心应手地运用了这种诗体。在短短的十四行中，表现了广阔的思想的天地。
诗中语汇的丰富，语言的精炼，比喻的新鲜，时代感，结构的巧妙和波澜起伏，音调的铿锵悦耳，都是异常突出的。诗人尤其善于在最后两行中概括诗意，点明主题，因而这一对偶句往往成为全诗的警句。

莎士比亚（1564—1616），英国文艺复兴时期伟大的剧作家、诗人，人文主义文学的集大成者，被誉为“时代的灵魂”、“人类伟大的戏剧天才”。

屠岸（1923— ），诗人、翻译家。2001年，因《济慈诗选》译本获第二届鲁迅文学奖翻译彩虹奖。2010年，获全国翻译行业荣誉奖——中国翻译文化终身成就奖。
