柳词中最富于反封建传统思想的是那些后人所谓的“淫冶讴歌之曲”，它们体现了新兴市民阶层争取恋爱自由和个性自由的要求。宋初词人们同五代花间词人一样有许多描写男欢女爱的作品，未曾受到统治者的指责。柳永的这类作品一再受到指责的原因，便在于表现了反传统的倾向。柳词中所描绘的不少市民妇女形象都是不受封建道德规范限制和妇德约束的。《锦堂春》（坠髻慵梳）是代言体作品，描述一位妇女曲折复杂的心理。她不拘封建礼法，不甘示弱，具有强烈的自我意识。这个形象不同于传统诗词中温柔贤惠、逆来顺党、听天由命的妇女，它本身即具有反封建意义，故能深深感动市民群众。柳永的《定风波》（自春来）描写了一位市民妇女的精神生活，词以少妇的语气，叙述其丈夫离家后的苦闷情绪，表现对爱情幸福的向往和大胆的追求。闲拈针线，伴着丈夫读书，形影不离，在她看来是幸福愉快的事，如此青春也不算虚度了。这是古代许多妇女最朴素的要求，然而在封建统治者看来，这侍妇女是有违妇道和礼教的：男子竟由妇女“拘束教吟课”，还要“针线闲拈伴伊坐”。柳永因写了此词，后来受到宰相晏殊的责备，说明这两位词人的社会审美理想的差异。
传统文学也有许多关于女性的香艳题材，却很少有作家真实地表达下层被压迫妇女的呼声。柳永长期生活在都市的下层，对这些不幸妇女的情况特别熟悉，因而很注意发掘这些题材的意义。都市中青年妇女受到市民思潮的影响，往往在思想与行为方面突破封建礼教，具体表现为对性爱的要求和对贞操的轻视。由所处的社会环境决定了她们为得到一点自由和幸福需付出重大的代价和牺牲，但结果往往是很难得到真正的爱情与幸福，遭到玩弄和遗弃。柳永同情这些妇女，在作品里多次重复着这个主题。这类歌词在民间演唱，往往哀艳感人。《慢卷铀》（闲窗烛暗）表现一位年轻妇女陷入难以排解的情感矛盾之中，她与情人的分离显然出于社会性的原因。分离后她憔悴追晦，谙尽凄苦，设想对方也很烦恼。她苦苦追忆逝去的欢乐，又后悔当初自己过于热情与轻率，以致造成而今生难分难舍的情形。假如当初她和从前一样“淡淡相看”，控制或压抑情感，或者不会落得这样的不幸。《满江红》表现恋爱中女子的痛苦情绪，她陷入苦恋，非常不幸，期待着情人的回心转意，尤其不甚明白自己可悲的处境和他真实的态度。她的幼稚痴迷更显得情感真挚，她的被抛弃就愈能引起人们的同情。作者以内心独自的方式深刻而细致地揭示了市民女性的情感生活，表现出通俗歌词的艺术力量。

宠佳丽。算九衢红粉皆难比。天然嫩脸修蛾，不假施朱描翠。盈盈秋水。恣雅态、欲语先娇媚。每相逢、月夕花朝，自有怜才深意。
绸缪凤枕鸳被。深深处、琼枝玉树相倚。困极欢馀，芙蓉帐暖，别是恼人情味。风流事、难逢双美。况已断、香云为盟誓。且相将、共乐平生，未肯轻分连理。
慢卷纳
闲窗烛暗，孤帏夜永，欹枕难成寐。细屈指寻思，旧事前欢，都来未尽，平生深意。到得如今，万般追悔。空只添憔悴。对好景良辰，皱着眉儿，成甚滋味。
红茵翠被。当时事、一一堪垂泪。怎生得依前，似恁偎香倚暖，抱着日高犹睡。算得伊家，也应随分，烦恼心儿里。又争似从前，淡淡相看，免恁牵系。
此乃别后追念旧欢之情。上半阕从独处无寐引起回忆，觉从前共处之时，总算起来，还是未尽相爱之情，今日追悔，但使人消瘦，即遇良好时光，也皱眉不乐。下半阕先言旧时欢事，今日思之皆生悲感，怎得如从前之共同欢乐，因而想对方之人，亦必多所苦恼。像这样，倒不如从前淡淡相看，免得如此牵挂。前言旧日，不够尽情，后又言不如淡淡相看者，凡情到极深时，必然会有此矛盾心理也。五代闺情词皆写女性相思之苦，柳词换写男性，却也能委婉曲折如此，可称抒情能手。还有当注意者，封建社会重男轻女，男子玩弄女性，况妓女之社会地位甚低，根本是供男子寻乐之用者，而柳词中之男性对女性却无此种痕迹。即如此词表情极为真挚而深厚，绝无轻薄之语，故不可以浮艳目之也。（刘永济《唐五代两宋词简析》）征部乐
