Author Description

宁一中，北京大学英语系博士，曾在美国加州大学（厄湾）做博士后研究。美国康奈尔大学Schoolof Llterary cntlclsm and Theory研究学者，英国剑桥大学高级访问学者，美国耶鲁大学富布莱特研究学者。曾任湖南师范大学教授、首批英语语言文学博士生导师、外语学院院长、湖南省翻译协会副会长，入选“湖南省首批百名青年教师骨干”。现任北京语言大学教授、博士生导师、外语学院院长、校学术委员会副主任。享受国务院政府特殊津贴。中国外国文学学会理事，中国英语文学学会常务理事，中国英语教学研究会常务理事，教育部外语教学指导委员会英语分会委员。出版专著、编著、译著十余部；在《外国文学评论》、《外语教学与研究》、《外国文学》、《外国文学研究》、《外语与外语教学》等学术杂志发表论文50余篇。主要研究兴趣：英美文学、叙事学、文体学、中西小说及小说理论比较。

Book Abstract

已经习惯了康拉德异域海洋小说的读者开始感到新奇。1907年的《星报》（Star）上有评论说：“这是康拉德先生第一次将伦敦放到他那神奇的熔炉之中。伦敦的魂魄，并不容易用文学呈现出来。我们的小说家很少能有这种神奇的魔力。现实主义小说家们统统铩羽而归。自狄更斯之后，还没有哪个小说家能抓住缥缈游荡的伦敦怪物。现在，康拉德先生抓住了它。他的手法如此绝妙，一如他抓住马来群岛丛林的魅力和大海的魔力。”①不过，尽管小说所描绘的伦敦给读者留下了深刻的印象，但并不像狄更斯的小说那样注重细节，而是追求神似，很少展现具体的地形特征和城市景观。当代有评论家在比较了华兹华斯版（Wordsworth）、牛津版（Oxford）和企鹅版（Penguin）《间谍》的封面所采用的伦敦油画后，认为小说中的伦敦与英国当代画家约翰‘弗丘（Virtue，John）笔下的伦敦神形俱似，虽不呈现细节，却抓住了魂魄。。此外，还有许多批评家在考证小说中对伦敦风土人情的指涉，挖掘作为英帝国首都的伦敦的象征意义。
故事场景的转变也带来了视角和主题的转变。当时英国是世界上最强大的国家，不仅在经济和政治上雄霸全球，算上殖民地的疆域，甚至可以说是世界上最大的国家，俨然就是西方文明和进步的顶峰，而帝国首都伦敦自然也就成了英国政治、经济和文化进步的缩影。但具有反讽意味的是，正是在伦敦，四处存在着混乱的无政府状态。评论家约翰·彼得斯（Peters，JohnG.）发现，康拉德经常把欧洲人物放到西方文明以外的地方，看他们在异域他乡的反应，而他们也大都在那些“未开化的”地方变成了彻头彻尾的“野蛮人”；而《间谍》却将欧洲人物放在他们自己文明的中心，借以揭示西方文明心脏地带的混乱状态，说明西方文明表面的秩序是虚幻的，不管是政治上的激进派还是保守派，都在破坏着社会的秩序。
