Book Abstract

《外国文学名家名作鉴赏辞典系列：泰戈尔诗文鉴赏辞典》：
本诗选自《故事诗集》，取材于佛教经典《撰集百缘经》。历史上，印度教和佛教曾经长期斗争，斗争的结果是印度教取得胜利。在印度教和伊斯兰教的双重打击下，佛教于十二世纪前后在印度消亡，十九世纪以后才又从境外传人。从宗教教派的角度看，泰戈尔信奉的是印度教。泰戈尔的祖父和父亲都是梵社领袖，他自己也曾担任梵社秘书，属于印度教的现代改革派。然而泰戈尔在宗教思想方面是非常宽容的，作为宗教哲学家，他主张“人的宗教”。在《戈拉》等作品中，他推崇超越宗教教派的属于一切人的宗教。泰戈尔对佛陀释迦牟尼非常尊敬，经常称赞佛教的慈悲、仁爱和智慧。本诗故事内容涉及佛教和婆罗门教的斗争，而属于印度教婆罗门种姓的泰戈尔却对受迫害的佛教表示同情，塑造了信仰坚定、不怕牺牲的佛教女信徒斯里莫蒂的形象，可见诗人思想的宽容和胸怀的博大。
《女信徒》全诗共有十六节。第一节描写摩竭陀王频毗娑罗皈依佛教、崇拜佛陀的情况。频毗娑罗是佛教史上第一个皈依佛教的国王，曾在京城王舍城为释迦牟尼建佛教史上最早的一座大寺院——竹林精舍。这里诗人用频毗娑罗建塔供养佛指甲的细节，形象地说明国王对佛教的虔诚和对佛陀的敬仰。
第二节写王后和公主信佛崇佛，用在宝塔前供奉花果、点亮金灯的细节来表现王宫中的礼佛活动。
第三至第四节，写频毗娑罗之子阿遮世弑父篡位之后禁佛反佛的情况，主要用了两个细节，一是焚烧佛典，二是下令只敬<吠陀》、婆罗门和国王，不能有第二信仰。
第五至第十节，写宫女斯里莫蒂不顾新国王的禁令，像往常一样沐浴净身，准备陪同太后、王后和公主去敬佛。她先后来到太后、王后和公主的房问，她们都惧怕国王的惩罚，不敢再去敬佛。作品以不同人物的语言和动作的细节，写出了太后的畏惧怯懦，王后的盛气凌人，公主的圆滑狡黠。诗人以简洁的笔墨，寥寥数语，便表现出各自的性格、神态和心理，使人物活灵活现，跃然纸上。
第十一至第十四节，写斯里莫蒂动员人们敬佛，没有人响应，只好在秋风瑟瑟的夜晚，独自在佛塔前点亮象征信仰的一盏盏明灯。诗人用短促的诗行，为主人公的行动营造出一个可怖的氛围，在暝暝的黑暗中，异教神社的古钟、宫门的号角、囚徒的歌唱、侍卫的呼喊，都显得阴森恐怖，而一个弱

最后两节，写斯里莫蒂面对屠刀，毫不畏惧。侍卫问是谁“冒死把禁令违犯”，她的回答大义凛然，显示了信仰的坚定，表现了不怕牺牲的大无畏精神，让那些随风倒的怯懦者相形见绌。最后，女信徒的鲜血溅上了白色的塔壁，塔前象征信仰的灯火也被熄灭了。在一片黑暗和恐怖中，女信徒的悲剧形象更加震撼人心。
