《从异乡人到失落的一代》从1964年文星出版至今，至少已印行100版。由于对历史与时间的焦虑和折磨，在他生命到达终点时，产量反而爆发，不停地写（1958-1963），直到过世。书内对海明威和加谬有不同的评价：海明威是现代主义的斗士（他写《战地钟声》、《老人与海》），加谬则是现代主义的逃兵（他用各种沉沦及逃避的态度反对现代主义的到来）。所以作者所理解的现代主义不是只有一种面貌。
此外，他对传统的批判（例如五四文學）、对台湾社会封闭的批判（例如家庭制度）、不断地追求心灵的解放与精神的出口、坚持要做个实践者的信仰……除了李敖之外，再也找不到第二人了。

《从异乡人到失落的一代》：
当这一代以再生的姿态出现的时候，他宁愿成为一个赤裸的人，叛逆和否定也许是心理上的反射和补偿，由此良心的痛苦可以得到发泄，可是它也同时把生活推入更广大的世界，那里有乖曲歪扭的舞台，正适合他所扮演的角色，那个角色在各方面都受到空无的压迫，这种空无一旦落人极端情势中，它便不但表明现代人的真实处境，更支配着现代作家对人生和世界的认识。这指出在价值保障的反面，所谓合理世界的牢固性已经烟消云散，它同时直言不讳地提示，作为传统文学的那个人的形象，我们必须重新予以评定和铸造了。这就是现代文学对时代所发出的第一个反应，代表一个改变人类历史地位的机会，传统文学的发展由此急转直下，指向另一个开创的纪元。
2.时间的割离（The Estrangement of Time）
在亚里士多德的诗学（ Poetics）里，他曾为悲剧定了一个调和、统一、完美的原则，那就是“时、地、动作”三者的一贯性，即有名的“三一律”。依照时间的一贯性，悲剧的故事必须发生于同一地点的二十四小时之内；当然亚里士多德本人不见得认为一定要符合这个原则才算是一篇好的悲剧，可是经过古典主义的渲染，它却成为一种规范似的束缚，无形中限制了文学的表现。

台湾作家王尚义，早夭，仅仅活了不到27岁。出版他的作品的目的，最开始是有大陆的读者在寻找他作品的简体中文版本。在编辑的过程中，我们逐渐发现，一个与命运抗争的青年人，在与我们对话。甚至能看到，在时代政治和思想文化大变革中，失去信仰的人们，怀着躁动混乱的心，是如何解决自己内心的孤独和排遣现实的困境的。我们这个时代，何尝不是？青年人，有的忙、有的病、有的孤独、有的无助、有的囊中羞涩、有的埋怨社会不公。社会的变革和进步所带来的激荡人心的东西，让人们都有着偏离生活中正确道路的错觉，从而下了很多错误的判断。让我们看看22世纪二战结束到冷战时期的社会和青年，他们所遭受的困境，以及在困境中所表现出来的斗志，有激情，也有悲观。看看他们，想想自己，也许会豁达很多。作者王尚义，在生前，不是一个喜欢热闹的人，没人关心他的过去，也没人关注他的未来，他低调地存活着，抗争着。刚刚参加完台大医学院的毕业典礼，自己就成了台大医院的病人。他最后死于肝癌。直到去世五年后，他的遗作出版，并逐渐受到欢迎，大家才最终发现了他的价值。作者虽年轻，但有可爱之处——他的率真和勇于追求。他学的是医科，可是他对于文章、戏剧、音乐、绘画和一切形式的艺术，都有着异乎寻常的爱好。尤其，他在文学上的追求，更表现出一种爱情般的诚心和火热。他受欧洲近代哲学家和海明威浪漫主义的影响较深，因而他的作品充满着人道的和浪漫的色彩。但他从不游离现实，他努力要表现的，仍是他所处的这个社会的不平和不幸。曾有一位台湾读者说，读完尚义的作品，他颇感惊异，惊异于一个早熟的心灵是那么深邃而繁复。这种惊异有一部分是夸张的，王尚义的全部遗稿将近八十万字，其中有半数不是特别成熟。不过有一部分精粹，十分难得，深邃且有预见性。这次，我们精选他全部遗作的精萃，散发他的芬芳，争取让读者能够发现这颗早逝的“孤星”，感受他的不幸和他那令人扼腕的才华。他的才华也许就是他的悲剧。对于写作，他有着不死不休的精神。他绝大部分的作品都完成在台大医学院上学期间。在那种窘迫的日子里，他不停地创作。他的笔尖犹如一个多面的晶体，虽然短暂，却已光芒四射。他的作品最重要的部分，是他对现代文学思潮的发源和趋向所做的探讨。死去的人，是容易博取人们同情和景仰的。王尚义去世已久，而且作品有着深深的时代烙印，就当下的眼光看，其作品是不符合文化快速消费潮流的，我们也无意过高地评价他的思想和作品价值。可是，对于一个年仅二十六七岁的生命，我们还能有什么要求呢？不过我们可以看到，一个杰出作家所需要具备的素质，王尚义是一步步在接近的。即便如此，他仍未成熟，有着很多偏激的想法和稍显负能量的态度。我们出版他的作品的目的，也在于此：与当代青年人谈谈心，谈谈历史，谈谈文艺，也谈谈如何克服困境和摆脱不幸的困扰，以便能够让读者在对比和审视中，充满正能量地健康生活。
