同一时刻，楚州城闹市的法场上，人山人海，因为犯下十恶不赦“药死公公”大罪的女犯人窦娥就要被开刀问斩了。只见窦娥披枷戴锁、被前推后搡地押赴刑场。临刑前，窦娥怨天咒地，叫屈唤冤，并面对上苍发下了三桩誓愿，其中一桩就是，此案若系冤枉，在这暑气冲天的六月间，也要降下三尺大雪，以遮掩屈死的窦娥尸首。奇怪的是，窦娥话音刚落，暑气骤退，冷风阵阵吹来，天空布满乌云。当刽子手行刑之际，纷纷扬扬的大雪开始飘了下来，连满脸横肉的监斩官和刽子手也惊呆了，颤抖了！他们心中明白：窦娥一案实属冤假错案。

窦娥是一个地地道道的苦命孩子，她有着令人心酸的身世……
窦娥小名端云。她的父亲窦天章是一个读尽缥缃万卷书、饱有文章的秀才，怎奈时运不通，功不成名不就，家中一贫如洗。更不幸的是，他的妻子年纪轻轻就病死归天，给他留下一个三岁的女儿端云。窦天章一家本在京城居住，因生活窘迫，不得不带着幼女流落到楚州城里。孤女寡父，起早贪黑，煎熬着人间日月。一年年地过去了，小端云长到了七岁，已经出落得聪明伶俐，她懂事体贴，知书识理，十分讨人喜欢。可他们的日子并不像小端云那么有长进，仍然是连起码的温饱都保证不了，为了生存下去，窦天章不得不向别人借高利贷以度光阴。
去年窦天章向城里一个颇有钱财的老寡妇蔡婆婆借了二十两的银子，利滚利，到今年连本带利就要还人家四十两。眼看期限已到，蔡婆婆几次前来讨取索债，可穷秀才窦天章哪里还得起？
几次讨债未果，以放高利贷为生的蔡婆婆并不失望，因为她另有打算。蔡婆婆虽亡了丈夫，但家里还有一个八岁的儿子蔡昌宗，当她索债看到了窦天章七岁的女儿端云是如此聪明漂亮，就萌生了要小端云做儿媳妇的念头。于是，她就多次托人去说合，讲明窦天章如果把女儿给她做儿媳，她就把这四十两债务抵消，另外再给他一些进京应试的盘缠。“四十两银子换个懂事乖巧的媳妇，值得！”蔡婆婆有些乐不可支了。
“这哪里是给人家做媳妇，分明是把女儿卖给人家！”窦天章有些痛苦不堪！亲身骨肉，一朝生离，谁能舍得？但严酷的现实又使得窦天章想不出别的办法。蔡婆婆催账紧急，况且今年进京应试又需要一笔盘费，这又能从哪里出呢？窦天章实在无计可施，就只好选一个好日子，亲自把女儿送到蔡婆婆家里。
窦天章领着小端云，来到蔡婆婆家里，彼此施礼相见。窦天章说：“婆婆，我今天把女儿给你送来，不敢说与你做媳妇，只给您老早晚使唤罢了。小生眼下就要进京赶考，留下孩子”只望婆婆多多照看。”蔡婆婆一见漂亮媳妇到了家，满心欢喜，连忙说：“窦秀才呀，请你不要见外了。端云姑娘来到了我家，咱两家就是亲家了。这是你的借钱文书，今天我就还给你吧，四十两银子的债务也算一笔勾销了。另外，再送给你十两银子的盘缠进京赶考，请亲家不要嫌少。”窦天章接过银子，慌忙抱拳施谢：“多谢您了，婆婆。您这种恩情异日一定重报！”然后又抚摸着端云的头对蔡婆婆说：“婆婆，这孩子从小没了娘，很不懂事，又很呆笨，有不到的地方，该打的时候，看在小生我的薄面上就骂她几句；该骂的时候，就叮嘱开导她几句。”蔡婆婆忙说：“亲家呀，这个就不用你嘱咐了。令爱到了我家，我就会像对亲生女儿一样看承她，你只管放心应考去吧！”
窦天章转过身来，眼中噙着泪水，慈祥地拉着端云的手说：“孩子，从今以后，可就不比在亲爹爹跟前，什么事情都将就着你。你如今到了这里，千万不能再任陛顽劣，不然的话，你可要讨打挨骂了！孩子呀，爹爹不是不疼爱你，如今抛舍下你，实在是出于无奈，你能谅解为父的心吗？”窦天章说着话，眼中的泪珠不觉扑簌簌地掉了下来。
听了爹爹伤心的话语，看着爹爹满是泪痕的脸，小端云不禁失声痛哭：“爹爹呀，早晚相依，如今你真要撇下孩儿不管了吗？”
窦天章更是悲痛万分，为了几十两银子，把亲生女儿卖给人家当童养媳，今天分离，不知何时才能相见，生离死别，谁不伤心？
