作家的终极追寻
如果真有前世的愿，当我在童年时代宣称：“我要成为一个作家！”应该是遥远生世中带来的种子。
有种子，自会成树。
所以我迈向写作之路，是可以预期的。
可是，预期的写作之路，却不能预知究竟会写出什么作品，因而每一篇文章和每一本书，都有不可思议的地方。那是在某一个时空中，思想、感情、观点与灵感撞击的结果，若是换了一个时间、转了一个空间，文章也就不同了。
这是为什么写作不能断的原因，二十岁有二十岁的样子，四十岁有四十岁的情貌，作品的展现因此不只是‘结果论”，每一个过程都是非常重要的。
每一年每一年，作品慢慢的不同，却不是那么明晰，若是每个十年来看，一个十年几乎就是一个“豹变”，会有完全不同的风格与内容。
我写作已经超过四十年了，最少经历了四个豹变，从浪漫主义者（绝对的抒情）变成理想主义者（追求佛教的圆满国度），再从理想主义者变成了存在主义者（确立人的终极存在），最后，变成自由主义者（打破了写作的框框）。
每次的转变都在不思议处，仔细寻索，却可以找到其中的关键。
我们也可以维持人生不变、作品不变，但是就背反了作家的终极追寻。
什么是作家的终极追寻呢？
向外，不断追求生命更高的境界。
向内，不断触及心灵更深的感动。
并且，把更高的境界与更深的感动，不断的与读者分享，一起携手走向人生的圆满与美好。
循时光的河流前进
由此观之，作为作家，我并没有什么可以遗憾的。
我每天都写作，对于作品我已全心付出，不辜负五十年前立下的初心。
我的读者，如果从小学语文课本开始读起，现在已经是即将步人中年了，我们的因缘殊深，有许多人读我的文章长大，而我自己却在字海中泅游，逐渐的老去了。
还好，文章总是会维持它最初的样子，年轻的依然年轻，感动的还是感动，只是写作的人，皱纹更深了，鬓发更白了！
每当重读自己的小作，仿佛循着时光的河流向上游前进，两岸花树宛然，群山微风依稀，好像重活了一次。
作家还是比一般人幸福呀！因为留下了作品，因而保留了时光，镌刻了情感，使一切逸去的，留下了余音遗响，活色生香。

最近，长江文艺出版社把我在九歌出版社的老作品，从头到尾寻索了一遍，重编了一本选集，或者可以从另一个角度，看见我少壮时代的行旅与心情。

菩萨清凉月，
常游毕竟空；
为偿多韧愿，
浩荡赴前程。
这是《华严经》的偈，我非常喜欢，常用以自况。
菩萨的心就像天上清凉的月亮，在究竟的空性里自在遨游。
但是为了多生累世许下的愿望，菩萨却一再的返回人间，浩浩荡荡地奔向解救众生的前程。
不只是自在的菩萨呀！如果真有前世或有来生，每个人在心里一定也许下过愿望，希望未来可以实现。
