Author Description

约翰·沃尔夫冈·歌德（1749～1832），18世纪中叶至19世纪初德国和欧洲最重要的作家、诗人。《少年维特的烦恼》是他早年最重要的作品。歌德创作这部小说时年仅25岁，它采用的书信体形式开创了德国小说史的先河。小说描写进步青年对当时鄙陋的德国社会的体验和感受，表现了作者对封建道德等级观念的反应及对个性解放的强烈要求：少年维特爱上了一个名叫绿蒂的姑娘，而姑娘已同他人订婚。爱情上的挫折使维特悲痛欲绝；之后他又因同封建社会格格不入，感到前途无望而悲愤自杀。小说1775年出版时被认为是德国文学史上一件划时代的大事；它问世后震撼了德国乃至欧洲整整一代人的心。

《浮士德》剧情梗概

《浮土德》悲剧第一部之前的《天上序曲》是全剧的“纲”，对于理解全剧主旨及其情节发展至关重要。悲剧虽然是在宗教框架下展开故事情节，但它探讨的是人性和人生。《浮士德》悲剧曲折奇幻的情节是以两个赌赛为前提展开的：一个是天主和梅菲斯特的赌赛，另一个就是魔鬼和浮士德的赌赛。天主认为“人只要努力，难免犯错误”，但最后“会觉悟应该走正确的道路”而走上清明之境，肯定了人类进取向上的精神，对人类前途充满信心。作为人类“善”的本性的对立面，魔鬼梅菲斯特是“恶”的化身。他认为人类“比任何禽兽更多兽性”，必定禁不住诱惑而满足，而堕落。各持己见。魔鬼便和天主打赌，要把学识渊博的博士浮士德引入歧途，由此展开全剧。

悲剧第一部开始时，浮士德在黯淡阴郁的中世纪书斋中皓首穷经，却又没有获得什么真正有价值的学识，因而对书斋生活由厌倦进而感到绝望，企图以死来结束苦闷的人生。复活节的钟声使他回忆起快乐的童年时光，感受到大自然和人生在向他召唤，于是放下举到唇边的毒酒杯，放弃自杀的念头。但他的上述精神状态却给了魔鬼的引诱以可乘之机。复活节那天，春光明媚，浮土德和瓦格纳出城郊游。归途遇一卷毛犬，浮士德把它带回书斋。没过多久，化身为卷毛犬的魔鬼梅菲斯特即以人形出现。浮士德与梅菲斯特的对话，尤其是魔鬼对自身重要特性～一“绝对否定的精灵”、“要作恶却行善”——的表白，对理解全剧十分重要。梅菲斯特愿充当浮士德的奴仆，让他摆脱一切烦人的束缚，满足他的一切尘世欲望，见识“人之从所未见”的一切；作为交换条件，浮士德允诺在他感到幸福满足的瞬间，魔鬼便可拥有、支配他的灵魂。浮士德和梅菲斯特订约，用鲜血签字。这就是悲剧的第二个赌赛。

梅菲斯特带领浮士德飞往当时有“小巴黎”之称的莱比锡。他引诱浮士德的第一站是莱比锡奥尔巴赫地下酒店。梅菲斯特施展魔法变出美酒，戏弄大学生，最后演成一场闹剧，但浮士德对这一切全然不感兴趣。于是梅菲斯特转而带浮士德到女巫的丹房，让他喝下魔汤，以超自然的魔法使浮士德恢复青春、激发情欲，为魔鬼引诱他沉迷于女色、过放荡生活准备条件。浮士德在女巫丹房的魔镜中看见平生从所未见的绝色佳人，身无寸缕，玉体横陈，颇涉遐想。旋即路遇玛加蕾特，惊为天人，要梅菲斯特设法引诱她，使他能一亲芳泽。玛加蕾特年轻美丽，是天真无邪的清纯少女。《浮士德》问世之后，玛加蕾特便成为德国古典文学中的著名形象，美丽、纯洁而不幸的少女典型。魔鬼施展手段，暗送珠宝首饰给葛丽馨（即玛加蕾特）。玛加蕾特的邻居玛尔特，丈夫外出，一去经年。梅菲斯特杜撰了一篇玛尔特丈夫客死异邦的说辞，又给了玛尔特一份她想要的其夫死亡的证明书（一份假证明书），利用她来给浮士德和玛加蕾特牵线搭桥，并提供幽会场所。在浮士德的热情追求下，起初羞怯的葛丽馨终于孩提般天真地敞开心扉，坦言自己对浮士德的挚爱真情。浮士德感情上得到了满足，然而高尚的道德观念终于没能战胜喝了魔汤之后的情欲冲动。他渴求肌肤之亲。葛丽馨为了满足浮士德，甚至“几乎再没有什么”不肯为他去做。为了欢度春宵，又不惊动葛丽馨的母亲，他们让她喝药安睡，不慎剂量过大，导致母亲长眠不醒。葛丽馨未婚先孕。她的哥哥军人瓦伦廷因她有辱门风，由爱转恨，手足之情荡然无存。瓦伦廷为洗雪奇耻大辱，和浮士德决斗，在梅菲斯特夹击下，浮士德误伤瓦伦廷致死。梅菲斯特偕浮士德逃逸。三桩“弥天大罪”萃于葛丽馨一身：鸩母、杀兄、肚子里有个标志“私通耻辱”的“孽种”。一个弱女子，只要有这三个罪名中的一个，就足以受尽世人羞辱，招致世俗法庭和教会的严厉惩处，何况葛丽馨背负三桩重罪？

葛丽馨悲痛欲绝。浮士德陷入忧伤绝望：葛丽馨被捕，将被处以死刑。浮士德探望身陷囹圄的情人葛丽馨，本为救她出狱，但此时葛丽馨已神志失常。她从梦幻般的爱情幸福天堂骤然跌落到地狱的深渊：受到杀害三条人命的指控，又受良心谴责的折磨，她没有别的出路，只能一死了之。对葛丽馨而言，死亡既是悲剧性的结局，又是解脱。在人问，她被判定为十恶不赦；但天上的声音说：“她得救了！’’这表示神认定她是无罪的，人间对她的处置是不公正的。
