钟叔河，1931年生于湖南平江，著名出版家和历史学家。早年曾做记者，1957年被错划为右派，“文革”中身陷囹圄达十年之久。1979年后策划“走向世界丛书”，尤其是在国内率先主张编辑曾国藩、周作人两个近代有争议的名人的文集、全集，在出版界产生重大影响。
主要著作有《走向世界——近代知识分子考察两方的历史》、《从东方到西方》、《念楼集》、《天窗》、《钟叔河散文》、《念楼学短》、《学其短》等。？做了非常正面的评价。曾国藩的一生给人们留下了太多的启发和思考，这本家书对于我们认识和理解曾国藩及当时的历史事件都将有很大助益。

Introduction

编者前言
曾国藩家书印行的版本不一，应该说各有各的特点。这部《全本曾国藩家书》的特点，主要有以下三项，这三项也就是本书印行的理由。
第一，所收家书较多较全
一八七九年（光绪己卯年）开始印行的刻本《曾文正公家书》和《家训》，共收家书九百零三件。
一九八五年新编初版的《曾国藩全集·家书》，不再另立“家训”名目，共收家书一千四百五十九件。
一九九七年编成的这部《曾国藩家书》，共收入与长辈书七十八件，与诸弟书一千一百五十八件，与二子书二百八十四件，合计一千五百二十件，比刻本多出六百一十七件，比全集本多出六十一件。
本书增入的家书，有的内容重要。例如据黄浚《花随人圣盦摭忆》所录增入的“同治三年四月二十日与沅弟书”（编号958），系兄弟密商应否奏请李鸿章（少荃）前来金陵会剿，有“少荃近日气焰颇大，恐言语态度以无礼加之于弟”，“淮勇骚扰骄傲，平日恐欺侮湘勇，克城时恐抢夺不堪”等语。这些当时不便公开的私房话，对于了解和研究曾李两家和湘淮两军的关系，就都具有相当重要的史料价值。（按本日与沅弟书还有一件编号957，全集本已收，刻本已收但有删节，此件则刻本与全集本均未收）。
有的家书别本虽未失收，却有缺脱，本书则就力所能及，作了些补充。例如“同治四年六月十九日与二子书”（编号147），教子欣赏文章之美，末云：
气势、识度、情韵、趣味四者，偶思邵子四象之说可以分配，兹录于别纸，尔试究之。
此“别纸”应是家书的一部分，少了它，读者便无法明白，曾国藩“录”下来要二子“试究之”的是什么内容。可是，刻本、全集本和其他一切版本，都没有收入这张“别纸”。本书才从台北故宫博物院《湘乡曾氏文献》中辑得，原来是精心撰写的一张“文章各得阴阳之美表”[图一]。补入了此表，这件家书才算完整，也使广大读者得知曾国藩作为“同光派”重要作家欣赏文章之美的一份心得。

第二，改正了别本的讹误
（一）刻本的讹误
举例：“咸丰九年八月十二日与纪泽书”（编号43）
此件与纪泽讲解作字换笔之法，讲到“以一横言之，须有三换笔”时，夸张地画出一横，特意突出“转折形迹”，“凡换笔皆以小圈识之”，并且加上了四行说明文字[图二]。因为一横的笔顺是从左至右的，所以这四行说明文字当然应该从左至右读：
初入手，所谓直来横受也
右向上行，所谓勒也
中折而下行，所谓波也
末向上挑，所谓磔也

刻本《家训》卷上页十七[图三]第六至七行的小字，却将它颠倒错成了：
末向上挑，所谓直来横受也
中折而下行，所谓波也
右向上行，所有勒也
初入手，所谓直来横受也
文句和文义与笔顺完全相反，不仅意思不通，文章也读不通了。
（二）抄件的讹误
举例：“同治五年八月廿四日与沅弟书”（编号1095）
此件未见国藩手迹，只存有原始抄件，题作“复九大人”。其首页[图四]正文第四行将“大功昭著”之“昭”字抄错成了“照”字，原校已改，不必再说。倒二行第四字起的几句话中，又抄错了另一个字，却贻误了后人。现将这几句话照录如下（括弧内文字属下页）：

寄云一疏而参抚黄藩又一片而保抚郭臬李非不快意当时即闻外议不平其后小蘧果代黄报复而云仙亦与毛（水火寄云近颇悔之）
如果稍知咸同人事，一眼便能看出这几句中的错字。因为毛（寄云鸿宾）郭（云仙嵩焘）凶终隙末，本与“参抚”、“保抚”有关，看曾国藩重要幕僚赵烈文的《能静居日记》便能明白：
毛早年在都中，见郭之文采，极欲纳交。后任湘抚，又屡思延之入幕。比任粤督，廷寄问黄莘农赞汤能胜粤抚之任否，毛即疏劾黄及藩司文格；而保郭堪任粤抚，李筱荃瀚章堪任臬司。疏入，如所请。毛固常人，郭之至，毛不能无德色；又彼此争权，迨后至于切齿。
这些正好作为家书的注脚。可见“寄云一疏而参”的“抚黄藩又”本该是“抚黄藩文”，即粤抚黄赞汤及藩司文格。“文”字错抄成“又”字，“藩文”便错为“藩又”了。
（三）全集的讹误
举例：全集本P1281“致沅弟（八月二十四夜）”
也就是抄件将“藩文”错抄为“藩又”的那封信。全集本竟将错就错，标点成了既不通文义、又不符史实的这个样子：
寄云一疏而参抚，黄藩又一片而保抚，郭臬、李非不快意，当时即闻外议不平。其后小蘧果代黄报复，而云仙亦与毛水火，寄云近颇悔之。
如果读者要问，“参抚”参的是谁？“黄藩”又是谁？“藩”能“保抚”么？保的是哪一位？还有“郭臬”是谁？孤零零的一个“李”又是谁呢？恐怕都无法回答。于是本书不能不改正标点为：
寄云一疏而参抚黄藩文，一片而保抚郭臬李，非不快意，当时即闻外议不平。其后小蘧果代黄报复，而云仙亦与毛水火，寄云近颇悔之。
这才符合《清实录》的记载：
（同治二年六月下）命广东巡抚黄赞汤、布政使文格来京，以两淮盐运使郭嵩焘署广东巡抚，广东督粮道李瀚章为按察使。
“寄云一疏而参”的“抚黄藩文”，“一片而保”的“抚郭臬李”，就都对号入座，清清楚楚了。
第三，便利读者阅览检索
在编辑整理上，本书做了下列工作：
一是将家书分为“与长辈”（祖父母、父母、叔父、堂叔、岳父），“与诸弟（澄弟、温弟、沅弟、季弟）”，“与二子（纪泽、纪鸿，附儿妇、女、侄，与妻及妻兄之信因与儿子有关，亦附及之）”三个部分，按年月日编号，以年月日标题。
二是每件家书均在题下注明发信地点。
三是每件家书分别注明[据手迹]、[据抄件]、[据刻本]（有手迹可据者均据手迹，无手迹有抄件者则据抄件，仅有刻本可据者才据刻本）。其刻本未收入或有删节者，同时分别注明。增收的家书则注明来源，如（编号）958即注明[据《花随人圣盫摭忆》]。
四是家书于标点分段外，并加提要，如“由汉口雇车，经河南到京”，“间日做功课，作一赋一诗”之类。必要时并加说明，如“桃源即今江苏溧阳”，“果里即这里，糯里即那里”之类。提要和说明采用旁批的形式，因正文从左至右横排，故旁批超过一行时亦请从左至右读。
五是原有之批语、夹注，悉予保留。原有脱讹倒衍及疑误之处，旁批不足以是正或指出者，均在正文中加括弧说明。地名、人名前后不一者，尽量予以统一。如“下邀里”、“下垇里”、“下腰里”统一作“下腰里”，（葛）“绎山”、“怿山”、“睾山”、“亦山”统一作“亦山”。
希望这些工作能够便利读者阅读和检索。
