《信徒的国度》内容简介：《信徒的国度》是诺贝尔文学奖得主V.S.奈保尔代表作，也是V. S.奈保尔最重要的文化随笔之一， 与 “印度三部曲”并称奈保尔文化随笔的“双子星”。1979年，奈保尔一路走过伊朗、巴基斯坦、马来西亚、印度尼西亚。在前后长达七个月的旅行中，他既拜访了政府高官、宗教领袖，也见过小商贩、苦修者、乞丐，试图揭开盖在世俗社会和信仰国度之上的面纱，一解心中的困惑：在信徒的国度里，先知可以摆平一切，可是如今，先知已经不在了。



Author Description

V.S.奈保尔（V.S.Naipaul）：英国著名作家。1932年生于特立尼达岛上一个印度移民家庭，1950年进入牛津大学攻读英国文学，毕业后迁居伦敦。50年代开始写作，著有《米格尔街》、《斯通与骑士伙伴》、《自由国度》、《游击队员》、《大河湾》、“印度三部曲”、《非洲的假面剧》等。2001年，获诺贝尔文学奖。

Book Abstract

一死亡协约萨德克原本应该跟我一起从德黑兰出发，南下一百英里，前往圣城库姆。我从未当面见过萨德克，一切安排都是在电话里敲定的。我需要一个伊朗翻译随行，大使馆里有人跟我提起萨德克的名字。
萨德克整天都有空，因为自从革命之后，他跟许多人一样，突然发现自己失业了。他有一辆车。我们在电话里交谈时，他说，要去库姆，我们最好开他的车，伊朗的公交车糟糕透顶，车速快得吓人，司机开车根本不在乎安全。
我们谈妥了价钱，包括使用他的车、他做司机兼翻译，而他的开价也相当合理。他说，我们第二天早晨应该尽早动身，好避开炎热的八月天。
他会先载他太太去上班一她的工作保住了，接着就直接开车到宾馆接我。
我应该在七点三十分之前准备就绪。
他到的时候，已经快八点。他年近三十，个头矮小，穿着搭配颇为细心，英俊，一头悉心修剪的头发。我不喜欢他。我看他只是个出身不高、略略受过几年教育的人，却带着某种冷嘲热讽的骄傲，表面上毕恭毕敬，内心却愤愤不平，不喜欢自己现在正在做的事情。就是像他这样的人，毫无政治信念、只有满心忿怨的人，才搞出伊朗革命。
跟他聊上一两个小时，可能还有点意思，要跟他朝夕相处几天，就没那么容易了，可是木已成舟，我也只有继续跟他耗下去了。
他面露微笑，带了一个坏消息给我。他认为，开他的车恐怕到不了库姆。
我不相信。我想，他不过是临时改变主意罢了。
我说：“开车是你的主意。我本来也只想搭公交车去库姆的。昨天晚上到今天早上之间发生了什么事情吗？”“车抛锚了。”“你出门之前为什么不打个电话给我呢？假如你先打过电话给我，我们还可以改搭八点钟出发的公交车。现在，我们连那班车也赶不上了。”“我送我太太上班之后，车就抛锚了。你今天真的想去库姆吗？”“车出了什么毛病？”“要是你真的想去库姆，我们可以开车碰碰运气。我的车只要能发动就可以走，问题就在于怎么发动它。”我们过去察看那辆车。他的车好端端地停在路旁，离宾馆大门不远，让我怀疑究竟有没有抛锚。萨德克坐上驾驶座。他探头喊住一个路人，一个德黑兰街头游手好闲的工人，我和那人在后面开始推车。一个拎着公文包的年轻男人，可能是个坐办公室的，正在上班途中，也自告奋勇地过来帮忙。马路开挖施工，尘土飞扬，车子同样也灰扑扑的。天气炎热，一旁来往的汽车与卡车排出的废气更是火上浇油。我们一会儿顺着车辆流动的方向推，一会儿逆着推，这期间，萨德克一直气定神闲地坐在方向盘后面。
人行道上陆续有人过来帮忙一阵子，接着就回头办自己的正事去。我突然想起来，是啊，我也该回头办自己的正事去，像这样前前后后地帮萨德克推车，是到不了库姆的。好的开始，才是成功的一半，开头如果这么暗淡，后面怎么会有好结果呢？于是，我没跟任何人打招呼，事后也没有一言半语，我离开了萨德克和他的车，还有那群自动帮忙推车的路人，自个儿回宾馆了。
我打了个电话给贝赫扎德。当时，也有人向我推荐贝赫扎德当我的翻译。可是联络他真费了我一番功夫：他还是个学生，在德黑兰这个大城市里，没有固定的落脚之处。而前一天晚上，在他来电之前，我已经选择雇请萨德克了。我告诉贝赫扎德，我的计划是如何泡汤的，他也没有推三阻四的拒绝，这一点我很欣赏。他说他还是有空，而且，他会在一个小时之内跟我会合。
他认为，我们不该自己开车去库姆。公交车比较便宜，我也可以顺便多多见识伊朗人民的生活起居。他还说，我们出发之前应该先将肚子填饱。
现在正值斋月，这个月里，从日出到日落，穆斯林都要封斋，而在像库姆这样一个到处都是毛拉。和阿亚图拉。的城市，更不可能找到供应饮食的店家。
在这个普遍洋溢着宗教激情的伊斯兰国度的某些地方，还有人因为封斋破戒而遭到鞭刑。
贝赫扎德的言谈方式，即使只是电话交谈，都与萨德克不同。萨德克只是个社会地位逐渐上升的小头锐面之人，说不定只比贫农阶级高出那么一两级，却费心装出比一般伊朗群众都高明的样子。
可是，他没比别人好到哪里去，真的。他那双笑眯眯的眼睛里，深锁着不少伊朗式的歇斯底里与困惑。贝赫扎德却能说明自己的国家，好坏和盘托出，语气也还是尽量保持客观。
而当他依照自己约定的时间，准时跟我在宾馆大厅碰面时，我一看到他，就觉得宽心自在。他比萨德克年轻，个子更高，肤色较黑，教育程度也高出不少，举手投足不见一丝花哨，丝毫没有萨德克的紧张与露骨的骄矜。
