鹿岛茂，明治大学国际日本学部教授，是日本权威法国学专家之一，专攻19世纪法国社会与法国文学，巴尔扎克作品的权威译者。本书是作者调查研究大量原始史料，历时18年写成的力作。
他的作品在学术界及文学界都极受肯定，曾获得日本山多利学艺奖（《想买马车！》）、讲谈社散文奖（《古书比孩子更重要》）、读卖文学奖（《各种职业的巴黎风俗》）、雄松堂格斯纳奖（《爱书狂》）等重要奖项。
