凤凰卫视对“9•11”事件的直播是在事件发生后20分钟内开始的。他们在36个小时之内全方位向世界上人口最多的国家传递此次恐怖袭击的电视画面。这是中国内地有史以来，第一次同步看到重大突发事件的电视新闻直播。而此时，香港无线还在播电视剧，直到一个小时后才回过神来。亚洲电视的直播早一些，而CCTV则没有直播。这是奠定历史地位的一次直播。华语传媒的业内人士认为，“9•11”事件对于凤凰卫视来说，犹如海湾战争对于CNN一样，使它一夜成名。

吴小莉几次举手都落空了，眼看记者会已经过半，她心里火急火燎的。当新闻官点名一位俄罗斯记者发问后，她立刻低头划掉同行们已经提过的问题，准备新的提问。奇迹说来就来。耳边突然听到有人叫她的名字：“你们照顾一下凤凰台的吴小莉小姐好不好，我非常喜欢看她的广播。”说话的人正是朱镕基。

2003年3月23日下午，凤凰卫视的伊拉克战争报道出现第一个高潮：闾丘露薇和蔡晓江在与大本营失去联系24小时后，出现在巴格达！闾丘露薇说，她要把战争最前线的第一手消息报告给全球华人观众。她曾露宿约伊边境，是全世界记者中唯一采访到战后第一批逃离伊拉克难民的记者。

2003年4月20日是中国新闻史上不平凡的日子。对非典的报道，成为媒体推动政治透明的一个范例。北京非典疫情的真实情况，在这一天下午国务院新闻办举行的新闻发布会上正式宣布。

新闻发布会开始前3分钟，国新办一位局长一脸涨红，冲出来问潘力：“凤凰卫视能不能直播？”话音未落，国务院副秘书长高强已经大步流星地走向主席台。就在这短短的两三分钟里，潘力迅速打通香港总部、北京电信局等几个重要环节的电话，然后笃定地告诉对方——凤凰卫视已经启动直播！

这一次，央视用了凤凰的画面。
