1957年生于福建泉州，1981至1985年就读于上海戏剧学院，1986年赴日留学，1995年移居纽约至今。
蔡国强是国际当代艺术领域中最受瞩目和最具开拓性的艺术家之一，艺术表现涉及装置艺术、行为艺术、观念艺术、多媒体艺术等多个领域，尤擅以火药创作作品，对西方艺术世界产生巨大冲击力，西方媒体称之为“蔡国强旋风”。
蔡国强的艺术足迹几乎遍及所有国际大展以及著名的艺术殿堂，主要火药草图及大型装置作品也为众多顶级美术馆永久收藏。曾获第48届威尼斯双年展国际金狮奖(1999)、美国欧柏特艺术奖(2001)以及第20届福冈亚洲文化奖(2009)等，连续多年被英国权威艺术杂志A，IRevieu，评为世界艺术界最有影响力的一百位艺术家之一。
蔡国强曾受邀主持国内多项大型庆典的视觉及焰火设计，包括2001年上海APEC大型景观焰火表演、2008年北京奥运会视觉特效艺术演出及2009年国庆六十周年焰火庆典，其中为奥运会所作的“大脚印”创意令人尤为印象深刻。

关于作品
做成的作品像天上出现的焰火，没有实现的只是黑夜而已。这对于艺术家来讲都是作品，都是他的人生。问题是人们仰望夜空，为的是看到绚丽的焰火，而非黑夜。

艺术的问题不能靠艺术解决，艺术的问题最终还是要靠艺术来解决。

杨照，本名李明骏，1963年生，作家、文化评论家。2009年任《蔡国强泡美术馆》展览总顾问。现任台湾《新新闻周刊》总主笔。作品有长篇小说《大爱》、《暗巷迷夜》等，中短篇小说集《吾乡之魂》、《独自》等，文化评论集《流离观点》、《理性的人》等。
李维菁，台湾大学农经系、台湾大学新闻研究所毕业，长期投入当代艺术观察与评论，著有《文物名家鉴藏》、当代艺术大系《商品·消费》等。

Book Abstract

“风水这件事情并不迷信。”他说过，一个人若选择相信风水，那么在相信风水的同时，等于他选择相信有一个看不见的世界的存在。多数人一旦相信看不见的世界的存在，往往便会担心害怕，怕这世上有鬼，也担心不知道鬼怪会做出什么事情。
蔡国强的观念不同，他对这种事情竟也有分乐观。他相信，人要相信有鬼，就必然要相信有神。
“既然有鬼，也必然会有神，不然这个世界的力量就无法获得平衡。你相信有鬼，就应该相信有神，因此不需要恐惧鬼，担心鬼的捉弄。因为你同时相信有神，便会感受到神对你的支持，行得正，自然会有感受。”
从中国到日本，再移居美国，蔡国强在国际上崛起，在日本、欧洲及美国陆续引起旋风，四处旅行参加不同国家与不同城市的展出。尤其九。年代是国际艺坛上双年展最为风行的时期，大大小小的双年展、各式各样关于文化现象的探索与宣言，频繁地出现。同样这个年代，中国艺术家的兴起又是艺坛特别关注的现象，国际策展人看好并且邀请中国艺术家广泛地参与双年展。蔡国强当年主要行程就是参加各地的国际双年展，或接受美术馆邀请去发表作品。

Introduction

1998年，我在纽约P.S.1当代美术馆中国专展上初见《草船借箭》。它被高高悬挂在狭小的、布满砖墙的空间，木质船体的每一缝隙密密麻麻插满带着羽毛的竹箭，粗暴，沉默，而且好看。
傲慢的纽约。那是中国当代艺术第一次有规模地被接纳、被展示，而《草船借箭》的出现，使这件制于泉州的大装置显得触目而冥顽，浑身带着彻头彻尾的陌生感。它的材质全然是异国的：一架废弃的南中国木船，一簇簇仿制的古中国的箭，那么“土”，那么“草根”，与纽约无数装置的材质——金属、塑料、泥土、石块、垃圾、纺织物、电子废料、凝固的汁液、腐朽的生命物——大异其趣。现在，犹如野蛮的闯入者，它被悬挂在纽约，像是一场被主动邀请的挑衅；而作者的思路，或者说，动机，尤其对西方主流艺术构成陌生感。日后在《纽约琐记》一份稿件中，我试图解析《草船借箭》的狡诘与攻击性：它来自纽约语境难以测知的另一维度，是一份因果置换的文本，一场角色变易的游戏，古老的传说，船与箭，巧智交作，在蔡国强手中，也在纽约，成为一则正喻而反讽的寓言。
此前，此后，我以为，蔡国强的几乎所有作品大约均可视为不同材质、不同场域、不同版本的《草船借箭》。但我不想说，蔡国强的精彩缘自谋略。是的，这一伟大的典故为他所借，然而他并不是以智谋取胜的诸葛亮；幸亏他不是。
迄今，关于蔡国强的议论与评说，包括他的自述，大抵将他的实践归结为中国资源的借取与活用。诚然，这是显而易见的，但玩弄中国牌不是他的专擅。近二十多年，太多中国当代艺术家以种种过于聪明的——抑或廉价的——方式搜刮所谓“中国资源”，并竭力探触更为广泛的西方资源，使之利用或被利用，期以兼收“船”“箭”之效，而居然奏效，果然奏效了——当我在庞大的《草船借箭》前徘徊不去，我所属意的不是作者的智谋，而是罕见的秉性，一种如今我愿称之为异常专业的“业余感”：在我所知道（而且佩服）的中国同行中，蔡国强可能是唯一一位自外于西方艺术庞大知识体系的当代艺术家。
