据我们的长辈回忆，布尔蒙，那是上马恩省正中心的一个小镇，长期以来只有三个医生。他们既是接生婆，又是通科医生和外科医生，忠诚地充当各种角色。可以说，他们足以应付各种情况，因为最偏远的地方也有人赶到这里来看病。为了完全负起自己作为地域中心的责任，这个小镇还得关心周围民众的健康。
一八六三年，当地的镇政府人满为患：三个医生死了一个，必须尽快另外找个医生来替代他。巧得很，车匠尼古拉说，他的表弟是个年轻医生，附近勒韦库尔人，愿意到他并不陌生的这个地方来行医。
之前一直在孚日山区行医的弗朗索瓦·米歇尔医生，也许正等着命运的召唤，他身穿黑礼服，手提小皮箱，前来这座童年时期生活过的小镇。他洋洋得意地向妻子艾米丽和儿子乔治介绍这个地方。布尔蒙蜿蜒起伏，地处一座高山的斜坡上，下面就是层林叠翠的山谷，平原就像撞碎在悬崖下的海浪，突然断在了岩石跟前。古老的圣母堂庄严地耸起灰色的钟楼，如同平静的草原之海上的一盏航标灯。
在十九世纪的时候，这个有七百五十人的小镇显得相当重要，人们从四面八方赶到这里来参加每年定期举办的集市，活跃着全省的商业和农业生活。小猪集市，马集市，牲口集市，布尔蒙人那么喜欢集市，以至于该地区的人干脆把他们叫做“集市佬”！可居民们毫不理会这种嘲笑和嫉妒：他们自豪地冠以这个头衔，同情地望着在远处挤来挤去的人群。
米歇尔医生慢慢地熟悉了他的病人：当然，主要是农民，也有几个拿年金的人，还有一小群警察和制蜡工。活可一点都不少，如果说布尔蒙的生活是惬意的，却也发不了财。病人大多很穷，他们往往送医生一只鸡或一只兔，权当医药费。善良的艾米丽马上就把这些东西拿到壁炉上去烤。
这位新来的医生住在镇中心圣尼古拉路一座方方正正的大宅里。他很快得知，这座房子与当地的历史紧紧地联系在一起：人们激动地回忆说，夏尔·博杜安将军就诞生在那几堵寒冷的灰墙后面。这个出生贫苦的人在第二帝国时期建立了军功，让家乡的名字传遍欧洲。在布尔蒙的小酒馆里，人们常常围着酒瓶，讲述他在塞巴斯托波尔河的一座小桥上大败俄罗斯人的故事。大家津津乐道地重复麦克马洪元帅把这位勇敢的战士介绍给拿破仑三世时说的话：“像博杜安这样刚强的男人，不应该在宫中浪费光阴，而应该让他们在战场上大显身手。”
现在，将军出生的屋子里充满了孩子的叫声，继乔治之后，又诞生了费迪南和路易。米歇尔医生很快就成了一位显要人物，进了镇议会，与他的两个同事洛蒙医生和科林医生平起平坐。在他一九一五年去世之前，他一直是镇议员，严肃认真地研究林间小道、公共预算和路面滚压等问题。一九。八年，七十六岁的他甚至被选为镇长，当了两年后，他给省长写了这么一封信：“我年事已高，不再适合管理这座城的财政和镇里的事务。”他在布尔蒙镇长任内的最后一个决定，是购买美丽泉的源泉，美丽泉现在还给当地供应饮用水。
一八七三年，镇议会曾讨论一件重要的事情：镇政府打算提供帮助，让死于阿尔及尔的博杜安将军的骨灰回归故里。这样光荣的任务，大家当然不会不同意。为了让英雄的亡魂能在家乡找到安息之地，可以不惜一切代价。老兵的遗骸将被埋葬在村口，紧挨着其家族的农场。这对小镇来说可是一件惊天动地的大事，镇上的人都觉得站在高处就能感到远处吹来的历史之风。
这一切，打乱了布尔蒙人平静的生活，却没让米歇尔医生操太多的心：就在一八七三年的七月二十九日，他的太太给他生下了第四个儿子，取名为阿尔班-儒勒。在同事科林医生和药剂师维尔曼的陪同下，当父亲的去镇政府申报了户口，圣尼古拉路的生活恢复了平静。几年后，又降生了第五个孩子，这回终于是个女孩，叫玛丽一路易丝。
季节更替。冬天的雪把布尔蒙四周的草地从秋天的枯黄变得一片洁白，春天到来，又是绿草如茵。现在，米歇尔的孩子们每天上午都要经过崎岖的小巷，前往山下的男生学堂去读书。大的几个孩子显得挺有出息：乔治已经像爸爸那样对科学感兴趣了，路易和费迪南呢，他俩迷上了数学。只有阿尔班坐在乡村学校的课堂里感到厌烦。他透过教室里布满灰尘的玻璃窗，好奇地望着外面似乎充满了希望的世界。远处，可以看见龚古尔，就是那两个著名作家的老家；再远一点的地方，隐约可以看到巴黎公社女英雄路易丝·米歇尔诞生的弗隆库尔，她说不定还是家里的远亲呢！因为在那里的乡下，每一个村里都有米歇尔的远房表亲。这些名字让人想起文学桂冠和政治运动。与那些隐约可见而其实多为想象的沸腾生活相比，布尔蒙的日子似乎太单调乏味了。
