第二次奉直战争，山海关作战的时候，我们没打成功。山海关是我们的正面，是我的第三军团的正面，事实第一军团军团长是姜登选，副军团长是韩麟春，第三军团我是军团长，郭松龄是副军团长。实际上，在前线指挥的，一个是韩麟春，一个是郭松龄。在后头，我就跟姜登选组织司令部，当年就叫一三联军，我等于是总司令，姜登选等于我的副司令。山海关是我们第三军团的主攻目标，我们死了很多人……攻坚的时候，我有一个团哪，差不多整个全完了。然而，由韩麟春指挥的第一军团却把九门口那儿打开了……那么，我们就要增援韩麟春、姜登选。现在把郭松龄的军队调过去，帮助继续打九门口，郭松龄他心里就有点惭愧呀：我没把山海关这方面打开，现在就是帮着人家去打呀。
我们是第三军团，一个军团三个师了，那时候叫三个旅。那是早晨，直系军队在高山上都看见我们的军队了，从九门口进去，摆开往里走，搁山路往里加军队，增援来了呀。
这三旅人差不多走了一天，都是很窄的山路往里面进。那么，郭松龄的心里可能就有点不愿意，山海关没打下来，嫌丢脸了。到那儿去他们就闹意见，进去就吵架了。
起因是为一件小事，郭松龄就火了，跟姜登选闹意见，他不打了。他把军队从前线带回来了，都调回来了，夜间哪，说起这段啊，我差不多又掉眼泪了。我在后方军团部，他们打来个电话，说郭军团长把军队都带回去了。啊？我就奇怪了，哎呀！
我明白了，我就赶快跟郭松龄通电话，我骂他两句。我说，你干什么？你怎么地？你要干什么，你怎么把军队带回来啦？为什么？他咔嚓把电话撂下了，他不说了。我说这事儿糟了。韩麟春就讽刺我，说你看你，把这个郭松龄惯的！姜登选说，得了，你别再对着老弟，把老弟整苦了，你别管他了。我说我赶快就去。
那么我就去找郭松龄，晚上黑，痛苦哇，不容易。山路，我骑着马，差不多夜间跑了90里，我要找这个郭松龄，找他的军队。路上就碰见我的军队都回来了，我问他们，怎么回来了，为什么回来？他们说，是郭军团长下的命令。
于是，我就给他们下命令，原地停止。原地就都停下来了，我说，郭军团长在什么地方呢？他们说，我们不知道，不知道他在哪儿，好像在前边呢，他好像出来了。
找到郭松龄，费了很大劲。郭松龄在一个小店的小店房，在那儿睡觉呢！天要亮还没亮呢，他在那睡着了。他一看我来了，很惊讶。我说，茂宸，起来，起来。我找来，他感到很奇怪。那个小店房有个后院，我就拿上板凳说，咱俩到后头说去。
我说，茂宸，你要干什么……我说你是我的老师，你的岁数比我大，我这套都是你教给我的，我说你要干这件事情，我是你的学生，我也是你的后辈，比你年轻。我后来说，我说可是你忘掉了，今天这个事情不同了，我是你长官，你是我的部下，今天我是你长官。现在就咱们两人，我来见你，我身上什么都没带，而你手上有枪，你现在要干这个事情，要想把军队带走，那你应该先把我打死。我说，你要不打死我，那我是你的长官，你就动不了，我就要给你下命令}你现在有两个选择，要么把我打死，要么你听我命令。你自个儿选择！
后来，郭松龄就哭了，就好像说。我惭愧呀，我没把山海关打开。我现在跟着人家，帮着人家去忙。因为另外一件事情，他们又这样子，好像在羞辱我。
他说，我很难过，给你丢脸哪。我说，你不要那么讲，给我丢什么脸？他说，我现在只求一死。我说，你不要说这话。
他哭。我说，你何必掉眼泪呢？
他说，我现在呀，我不去帮(人家打)，我求一死，我愿意自己死。我说，那好，你既然决心要死，那好办哪；你说你给我丢人，你没把山海关打开，你现在又决心一死，那你上战场上去死，你拼命往里打，那你不是又给我增了面子，你也得到好死了吗？要死，你死在战场上好不好？
他点头说，好！
那时，天也亮了，我说，我一宿没吃饭，你也没吃饭，喝点稀饭回去。这样，他人也好了，回心转意了，又把军队带回去了。
……白天郭松龄就带着三旅人，从这九门口进去了。后来我们打胜了，人家直隶军说了我们才知道，那山上敌军都看见了：唉呀妈呀，奉天到底来了多少军队？昨天白天进了一天，今天又来了。怎么来那么多的军队来夹击九门口来啦？
敌人哪儿知道，郭又把军队给带回来了！
就好像作假一样！把那敌人吓坏了，说这家伙他们来了多少人哪？
其实都郭松龄一个人干的事，他老人家是没管旁的，先声夺人，就拼命打进去了，一下子就打到秦皇岛……整个把山海关包围了，所有的火车都给切断了，火车都出轨了，哎呀，后来我到山海关看，张作相捂着我眼睛，说你别看。唉呀，军人到那个程度上！
张学良口述回忆中认为，郭松龄是因为没有打下山海关，失去了面子而厌战。对照前述郭的罢兵停战的建议可以看出，郭实际上是以此为借口而已，是为其一。其二，从张学良描述的郭参战后的结局来看，郭的确是作战的高手。
第二次直奉战争结束后，奉军乘胜向关内扩张。所到之处，不仅疯狂地镇压人们的反帝爱国运动，而且到处非法抽捐筹饷，侵扰民众。奉军的暴行，激起了全国人民的公愤，同时也引起了其他军阀的不满。因此，1925年的下半年，一个全国规模的反奉运动掀起了。
面对这种局面，加之张学良所言的“权力分配不公平”的原因，郭松龄心情郁闷，决心借赴日本参观秋操之机，以研究日本军事为名，暂时隐居日本，隔岸观火。1925年10月6日，郭松龄来到了日本。P6-8

Introduction

张学良将军作为世纪老人，不但是一些重大历史事件的见证者，同时也是中国近代一百年来重大历史事件的亲历者。1936年12月12日，他与著名爱国将领杨虎城发动了惊天地、泣鬼神的西安事变，由此达成了国共两党合作抗日的局面。张杨二位将军，以自己的爱国壮举，改变了历史的走向，因而成为中国历史上的英雄人物。
但是，对于这样两位推进中国历史发展的英雄人物，长期以来，由于政治等诸多因素的影响，在大陆，对他们的研究，因为涉及在台湾的国民党政府，或多或少地存在着一些禁忌；对于一些与他们相关的历史史实，尤其是与西安事变相关的历史史实，也往往无法秉笔直书。即使当年这场事变的亲历者，在撰写回忆录时，也因为有当时的背景，而往往有所遮掩，或者将有些重要的历史情节和人物活动予以割爱。而在台湾，在国民党执政的情况下，张学良、杨虎城二人当年的壮举，一直是被作为犯上作乱来看待的。关于他们的所作所为，一直是相当禁忌的话题。从有关材料中我们得知，在张学良长期被幽禁于台湾的岁月中，他的日常起居，一直受到严密的监视，同时，有关对他的报道，也一直是国民党政府控制的媒体所禁忌的话题。国民党当局力求逐渐抹掉这一段历史，即使作为学术研究，也没有公开的可能。在国民党的宣传口径中，张学良和杨虎城一直是被谴责的对象，被妖魔化的对象。这种状况，一直持续到上个世纪80年代末和90年代初。
从历史研究的角度来说，任何意识形态化的控制，都不利于对历史真相和历史人物的所作所为进行客观、深入的探究，因此，对于张学良、杨虎城二位将军的研究，应该说，截至上个世纪80年代，在台湾几乎没有什么大的进展。而对大陆来说，由于周恩来总理的倡导，中国人民政治协商会议文史委员会的主持，张学良将军的亲朋故旧很早就开始了对西安事变以及对张学良不同历史时期的回忆资料的搜集整理。应当说，这种对史料的抢救，的确是高瞻远瞩，泽被后世的。
上个世纪80年代，伴随着两岸关系的松动，关于张学良的研究进入了一个新的时期。在此期间，海峡两岸都把张学良的研究纳入到正常的学术轨道。与此同时，伴随着国际上对第二次世界大战研究的深入，中国的抗日战争也被纳入到世界反法西斯战争的研究序列，在中国抗日战争史上占有重要地位的西安事变，自然也成为国际学者关注的焦点。由此，对张学良的研究就更深入一些。
不过，从目前的研究成果来看，对于张学良在中国近现代史上的所作所为，尤其是他在九一八事变、西安事变等重大历史事件中的作为，由于官方档案材料一直没有解密，学者在进行深入研究时，仍然有很多迷雾有待于澄清。
上个世纪末，张学良重获自由，解除了长达半个多世纪的幽禁生涯后，他移居美国。国际、国内的学者对他的行踪都相当关注，这种关注，在很大程度上是对有关他本身的历史经历的关注。在档案材料相对缺乏的情况下，张学良本人的回忆就显得弥足珍贵。而且，他本身所珍藏的材料，也为众多学者所关注。
但是，对于张学良本人来说，虽然人身获得了自由，而精神上仍然是不自由的。这其中的一个重要原因，就是与他一起亲身经历过一些重大历史事件的人还没有谢世。即便有些人已经谢世，其子女或仍然担任重要职务，或还在政治圈内活动。所以，张学良仍然不大畅谈自己的经历。1990年，他首次接受日本NHK电视台访问，因为是“第一次开口说话”，所以，其谈话内容迅速传遍了世界，也为国际、国内众多学者所瞩目。
此后，有诸多学者涌起了采访张学良以保存口述资料的念头。美籍华裔史学家唐德刚教授较早地开展过这方面的工作，但并没有坚持下来。这其中，有张学良的因素，也有唐先生的因素。
新世纪初，在有关人士的牵线搭桥下，一向以口述历史成就卓著著称的美国哥伦比亚大学口述历史中心，终于说服张学良，开始系统地访谈并整理他的回忆资料。张学良和赵一荻夫妇承诺，将个人资料，包括日记、书信、研究历史的心得以及与有关人士的往来信件，等等，悉数交给美国哥伦比亚大学的善本与手稿图书馆保存，图书馆对张学良的资料做了复制、整理、分类与编目工作，并定名为“张学良、赵一荻文件与口述资料”。“张学良资料”内容非常丰富，包括口述历史、往来信件、手稿、学习笔记、日记、艺术品、印刷品(出版品、剪报)等。
虽然张学良确定，这批资料在2002年才能公布于世，但是，对他进行访谈的张之宇、张之丙等人，捷足先登，已先期利用部分资料，取得了一系列新的研究成果，引起了国内外学者的广泛关注。对研究这段历史的学者来说，无疑对这批资料的期望值会更高。
2002年，哥伦比亚大学口述历史中心按照与张学良的约定，及时开放了这批资料，国内有学者前往查阅。
翻阅这些资料后，我们惊奇地发现，以往张学良研究中的许多谜团，尤其是对九一八事变和西安事变中一些至今令人迷惑的问题，或可有所破解。本书即是对这些资料的价值、意义所在的集中研究与阐释。
应当说，在张学良的研究过程中，还是有诸多的不如意。比如，对于张学良资料中所提到一些涉及档案材料的历史事件，因条件所限，我们还不能广泛地查阅。这样，就少了一个相互印证的环节。所以，有些印证，只能是根据已有的材料或者学者的研究成果来完成，这就不免会产生诸多遗憾。
历史研究的深入，总是离不开丰富的、真实的史料。但是，不能因为相关档案资料缺失的限制，历史学者就停滞不前。对张学良的研究也同样如此。因此，只能有一分材料说一分话了。在这样的前提下，本书难免有这样那样的错漏，敬请读者指正。
