Author Description

海伦.凯勒，美国著名的盲聋女作家、教育家。
她幼时患病，两耳失聪，双目失明。七岁时，安妮·沙立文担任她的家庭教师，从此成了她的良师益友，相处达50年。在沙立文老师帮助之下，海伦?凯勒以惊人的毅力坚持学习，后考入哈佛大学拉德克利夫女子学院，并以优异成绩毕业。在大学期间，写了《我的生活》一书，讲述她如何战胜病残的故事，给成千上万的残疾人和正常人带来鼓舞。这本书被译成50种文字，在世界各国流传。以后又写了许多文字和几部自传性小说，表明黑暗与寂静并不存在。后来海伦?凯勒成了卓越的社会改革家，到美国各地，到欧洲、亚洲发表演说，为盲人、聋哑人筹集资金，建立了一家家慈善机构。二战期间，又访问多所医院，慰问失明士兵，她的精神受人们崇敬。

我们谁都知道自己难免一死。但是这一天的到来，似乎遥遥无期。当然人们要是健康无恙，谁又会想到它，谁又会整日惦记着它。于是便饱食终日，无所事事。
有时我想，要是人们把活着的每一天都看作是生命的最后一天该有多好啊！这就能更显出生命的价值。如果认为岁月还相当漫长，我们的每一天就不会过得那样有意义，有朝气，我们对生活就不会总是充满热情。
我们对待生命如此怠倦，在对待自己的各种天赋及使用自己的器官上又何尝不是如此？只有那些瞎了的人才更加珍惜光明。那些成年后失明、失聪的人就更是如此。然而，那些耳聪目明的正常人却从来不好好地去利用他们的这些天赋。人们视而不见，充耳不闻，无任何鉴赏之心。事情往往就是这样，一旦失去了的东西，人们才会留恋它，人得了病才想到健康的幸福。
我有过这样的想法，如果让每一个人在他成年后的某个阶段瞎上几天，聋上几天该有多好。黑暗将使他们更加珍惜光明；寂静将教会他们真正领略喧哗的欢乐。
最近一位朋友来看我，他刚从林中散步回来。我问他看到些什么，他说没什么特别的东西。要不是我早习惯了这样的回答，我真会大吃一惊，我终于领会到了这样一个道理，明眼人往往熟视无睹。
我多么渴望看看这世上的一切，如果说我凭我的触觉能得到如此大的乐趣，那么能让我亲眼目睹一下该有多好。奇怪的是明眼人对这一切却如此淡漠！那点缀世界的五彩缤纷和千姿百态在他们看来是那么平庸。也许人就是这样，有了的东西不知道欣赏，没有的东西又一味追求。在明眼人的世上，视力这种开赋不过增添一点方便罢了，并没有赋予他们的生活更多的意义。
假如我是一位大学校长，我要设一门必修课程，“如何使用你的眼睛”。教授应该让他的学生知道，看清他们面前一闪而过的东西会给他们的生活带来多大的乐趣，从而唤醒人们那麻木、呆滞的心灵。
