Author Description

时隔不久，倒霉的恩西索“学士”开始为当初没把巴尔沃亚连同箱子扔到海里而追悔莫及。这个胆大妄为的家伙在几星期后就把所有的权力都攥到了自己手里。在法律和秩序观念中熏陶长大的恩西索一心想以候任总督的身份，好好管理这块殖民地，使之有利于西班牙朝廷。虽然身处简陋的印第安茅舍，但他一如在他塞维利亚办公室一样签发着工整严谨的法令。他严禁士兵们在这块蛮荒之地向当地土著勒索黄金，因为收购黄金是朝廷的权力。他力图让这些亡命之徒遵守法律和秩序，然而，这帮家伙们天生就只信奉武力和强权，根本不把舞文弄墨的文弱书生放在眼里。没过多久，巴尔沃亚成为这块新殖民地事实上的当权者。为了活命，恩西索“学士”不得不狼狈出逃。而当国王委任的总督尼古萨到来时，巴尔沃亚根本就没让他上岸。可怜的尼古萨被赶走后，又在回国途中不幸溺水身亡。现在，藏身箱子里出来的那个巴尔沃亚成为了这块殖民地事实上的主人。然而，他还不能为自己的成功而高兴。因为违抗王命，公然造反，加之国王派来的总督也被他驱逐后丧命，他知道自己不能奢望得到国王的饶恕。他知道恩西索正携带着对他的控告信在返回西班牙的途中，他迟早都将因叛乱罪名受到法庭的审判。好在，这里和西班牙相隔遥远，他还有时间。他很清楚只要自己现在找到一堆堂而皇之的理由，再准备一大笔上贡的黄金，就有可能推迟甚至免除牢狱之灾。问题是首先要弄到黄金，黄金就是权力！想明白这些后，他开始和皮萨罗一起对当地的土著印第安人进行了残酷的杀戮和抢劫。此时，他再次得到命运的垂青。一次，他来到当地一个名叫卡雷塔的印第安酋长家里意图不轨，酋长眼看在劫难逃，就向巴尔沃亚建议，他应该和自己的印第安人结盟，而不是为敌。为表诚意，他愿意把自己的女儿献给他。巴尔沃亚认识到在当地结交这么一个可靠的、有权有势的朋友非常重要，他接受了这个建议。令人惊讶的是，巴尔沃亚终其一生都善待着这个印第安姑娘。就这样，他和卡雷塔酋长一起携手征服了附近所有的印第安人，在当地建立了巨大的权威，连当地最有势力的柯马格莱酋长也恭敬地邀请他去自己家里做客。而就是这次邀请，使得巴尔沃亚的命运发生了世界历史意义的改变。在此之前，他只是一名亡命之徒和违抗王命的叛乱分子，将要面临着卡斯蒂利亚法庭的死刑审判，在此之后，他以自己的一次壮举被历史铭记。在柯马格莱酋长宽敞的家中，满屋的金银财宝让巴尔沃亚目瞪口呆。还没等他开口，酋长就送给他四千盎司黄金。紧接下来的一幕，让柯马格莱酋长极为惊讶，这些刚才还趾高气扬的高贵的客人们一见到黄金，立刻抛开了所有的尊严，像一群疯狗一样相互扑向对方，他们拔刀弄剑，摩拳擦掌，狂呼大叫，都想多分一点金子。柯马格莱酋长一脸惊讶又鄙夷地看着眼前的这一场闹剧。生活在蛮荒之地的人们永远都会对这些文明人感到不可理喻。那一小撮黄色的金属在这些文明人的眼中，竟然会比文明在精神和技术领域取得的一切成果都要更有价值。这时，酋长上前和他们说了一句。当翻译把这句话说给这群人后，他们脸上露出了比刚才看到黄金更加可怕的贪婪。柯马格莱酋长说，不必为了这么一点没多少价值的东西争来吵去，为了这样一种稀松平常的金属而拼命，真让人觉得不可思议。就在高山之后，有一片大海，那里所有流向海洋的河流都富含黄金。那边生活的民众乘坐和你们一样带帆的船，他们的国王就用黄金杯盘吃饭喝水，你们到那里，想要多少黄金就有多少黄金。但通往那里的路崎岖坎坷，充满危险。那些酋长们不会让你们通过。不过，路倒是不远，只有几天的行程。这些话一下子说到了巴尔沃亚的心坎上。他多年来梦寐以求的黄金国现在终于有了线索。如果柯马格莱酋长所说的都是事实，无数的前辈们跋山涉水，苦苦追寻的目标，现在离他只有区区几天的距离。这也证明了另一个大洋的存在，哥伦布、卡博特、科莱里阿尔和另外那些伟大的航海家们都曾苦苦寻找通往这个大洋的通道，但他们都失败了。找到了这个大洋，也就意味着发现了另外一条环绕地球的新航线。谁先发现并为朝廷去占有了它，他的名字无疑将永载史册。巴尔沃亚知道，他一定要去越过巴拿马海峡，找到这个通往印度的南方海洋，并为西班牙去征服那个黄金之国，这将是他救赎自己、功成名就的绝好机会。在柯马格莱酋长家里的这个时刻，决定了巴尔沃亚一生的命运，从这一瞬间开始，他的生命才从到处试试运气的冒险一跃而成为具有超越时间的、崇高的崭新意义。
