我的父亲乐于助人，满怀悲悯，总是替别人着想，很少想到自己。于右任伯父赠诗，其中有句概括写照他：“处处忙人事，时时念国仇。”他为人谋事，四行书飞遍全国；提携教育青年，倾其所知；救助别人从不量力而行，以承担赡养烈士家属遗孤为乐事。民初报人曹成甫、邵飘萍惨遭军阀杀害，父亲毅然肩负起赡养抚育烈士遗属的责任。有年，他在天津，自己生活困难，时逢年关，按月要给曹妻送的生活费仍无着落，为能使曹家安度，他不顾数九寒天，将身穿的仅有一件皮袍送进当铺，典押所得，及时送到曹家，使曹家母子欢度春节，方始安心。父亲平生不求名利为己责，做了好事从不宣扬，这些历史鲜为人所知，今年来才有所披露。
父亲辛劳一世，了无积蓄，从不置私产。家母常喜说，我家是“上无片瓦，下无寸地”。家居重庆时，长期借住在我的干爹康心文汪山府中，报社领导层屡有人劝告，长期租住，人来客往，总不相宜，以父亲事业有成、如日中天的声望也似不妥，关心奉劝他置地建屋。父亲认为用大公报社之款为己建屋，大为不妥，婉言屡拒。直到他逝世，我们都租住在康家。父亲身后，只有他终其生服务的大公报社，留下的钱财，仅有在他身穿衣衫中取出的十元法币。遗嘱中，对子女也唯托友人们照顾，终其一生，保持了穷新闻记者的雅称。

名士风度国士魂前贤有诗云：“从古江山闲不得，半归名士半英雄。”将风流潇洒的名士与创造时势的英雄同等看待。在近代百年中国士林，《大公报》主笔张季鸾，可以说不仅是一代风流名士，还是凛凛群惊、标高千古的无双国士，自然在历史天空留下璀璨的光华。
张季鸾作为名士之“风流”，既非古人所谓诗酒风流。也非如今常见的裙边风流，而是灼灼才华之风流，傲岸人格之风流，千古道德文章之风流。他除了以时评而名倾朝野外，还有高雅的风度和气质，更可贵的是不慕荣利，追求自由独立的精神，清高而有气骨，被时人所看重，可谓“是真名士自风流”。
清末民初，中国遭遇了“三千年未有之变局”，各个政治集团都在寻求拉拢名士，帮助谋划或者支撑门面。因此也出现了许多朝秦暮楚，望尘下拜者。同时，“你方唱罢我登场”的军阀，政治上采取高压的愚民政策，对反对自己的名士甚至敢冒天下之大不韪，关押，甚至加以杀戮。名记者邵飘萍，因拒收张作霖三十万元“封口费”而惨遭杀害；而林白水，则被张宗昌以“通敌有证罪”枪毙。但就在这个言论自由的天空一片黯淡的时候，张季鸾超逸出群，标新立异，有书有笔有肝胆，傲立当世，可以说“铁肩担道义，辣手著文章”。他留学日本，创办《夏声》杂志，倡言革命；任总统府秘书，执笔起草孙中山就职宣言，再造共和；创办北京《民立报》，名列北京新闻界的“民初三杰”；披露袁世凯“善后大借款”内幕，点燃讨袁“二次革命”的导火线……辗转京沪办报的前15年中。有两次被捕入狱，颠沛流离，历尽艰险，备尝艰辛，但追求自由之精神不改。其中两度从政，不乏做官发财机会，但挂冠而去，甘愿做穷记者，“新松不恨高千尺，恶竹应须斩万竿”。后15年任《大公报》主笔，不依附任何政治势力，自命为“自由知识分子”，庄严地亮起“不党、不卖、不私、不盲”的“四不”旗帜，而且基本上忠实地履行了这一庄严承诺；发扬文人议政的报风，习惯于“见大人，则藐之”，先后发表两篇文章痛骂正值春风得意的蒋介石，把“笑傲王侯”的名士遗风发挥得淋漓尽致，可正是“不以雄名疏野贱，唯将直所斩王侯”。这种风流名士风度，可以说是时代正义和良知的象征。张季鸾“心事浩茫连广宇”，在他的心目中，整个民族，整个国家。整个黎民百姓都和自己息息相关。这种“铁肩担道义”的情怀，源于对自我在社会、历史中的角色、立场的一个选择，在百年中国报林无人能出其右。可惜的是，“风流总被雨打风吹去”。在今天，具有这样名士风度的知识分子已罕见。
更可贵的是，在民族危难的时刻，张季鸾表现出了“舍我其谁”的国士之风。国士之风是什么？司马迁总结道：“事亲孝，与士信，临财廉，取予义，分别有让，恭俭下人。常思奋不顾身，以徇国家之急。其素所蓄积也，所以为有国士之风。”（《报任安书》）看其文，观其行，论其人，张季鸾不正是民国时期无双国士吗？
“扶风豪士天下奇，义气相倾山可移”。“九·一八”事变后，国难当头，他则当仁不让以“国士”自居，确定“明耻教战”的宣传方针；在整个西安事变进程中，共写下十一篇社评，特别是《给西安军界的公开信》，在东北军将士中产生了很大的影响，可以说抵得上十万雄师；值全民抗战之际，他把《大公报》“完全贡献给国家，听其统治使用”，以笔为戈，激励民心士气，被称为“战时精神长城”；他本人还为国民政府起草了重要的文稿，参与国家重大的外交谋划、国际宣传和对日秘密谈判，成为高级智囊；《大公报》主要因张季鸾的社评获密苏里新闻学院颁发的最佳新闻事业服务奖，他的笔墨生涯，为文人扬眉，替志士吐气，正如周恩来唁电所评“谋国之忠，立言之达，尤为士林所矜式”。
苏轼的朋友、诗僧参寥在《东坡先生挽词》中写道：“峨冠正笏立谈丛，凛凛群惊国士风。却戴葛巾从杖履，直将和气接儿童。”正是从两方面归纳了国士的人格魅力。张季鸾既严正又平和，既坚持了士大夫积极入世、刚正不阿、恪守信念的人格理想，又保持了名士追求超越世俗、追求艺术化的人生境界与心灵境界的人格理想，把两者融为一体，巧妙地解决了进取与退隐、入世与出世、社会与个人那一类在士大夫心灵上历来相互纠结缠绕的矛盾，在国难当头之时，以如椽巨笔，为国为民做出了贡献，堪称百年中国无双国士。
