在与出版社的通力合作下，本书得以面世。尽管年事已高，为疾病困扰，弗兰克尔仍然一如既往地以*大的精力投入到本书的写作中，*终在他90岁生日之前完稿。

幽默的语言当然少不了俏皮话，也就是精心设计的文字游戏。著名的登山爱好者鲁道夫·赖夫是我多年的旅伴，二战前他是多瑙河流域阿尔卑斯山登山协会的会长，每次我们和登山协会的其他成员一起去登山，他总会喊我“疯子大夫”（Narrendoktor）——我是一名精神病科医生。当时我在施泰因霍夫精神病院工作，每次见面，他都不会正经地称呼我“医生”，而是在前面加上“疯子”作修饰词。终于有一天我忍无可忍，当着所有登山队友的面警告他说：“听着，赖夫先生，如果你继续叫我疯子大夫的话——知道我会怎么称呼你吗？施泰因霍夫的赖夫（Steinhofreif）！”
前面说到，他叫赖夫（Reif），德语意为“成熟的，有准备的”，在维也纳人们会用这个词指代疯子，因为疯子就是“准备好可以送进精神病院的人”，所以“施泰因霍夫的赖夫”意思就是“可以送进施泰因霍夫精神病院的家伙”！从那之后，赖夫先生再也不敢喊我“疯子大夫”了。
玩弄文字游戏，有时需要创造新词。1961年我在哈佛大学担任客座教授，有一天讲课，因为天热教室的门都开着，一只狗突然跑进教室里来，四处打量了一下，又慢悠悠地走了出去，所有人的注意力都被它吸引了，我也不例外。因为事发突然，大家都有些愕然，谁也没有发出笑声，这时我发话了：“这就是我们所谓的‘dogotherapy’。”我这么说，是因为当时我正在讲授的内容是“意义治疗”（logotherapy）。
还有一个例子，我自己没车的时候，总是对别人说：“你知道吗？我通常都是坐‘他动车’（Heteromobil）出门，也就是我不自己开车，而是让别人捎我一程。”
有时候不用创造新词也能达到一语双关的效果，比方说，如有别人要为我的茶续杯，而我不想再喝时，我会说：“你知道吗，我是个一神论者（Monotheist），所以我只喝一杯茶。”
在演讲时，幽默的话语不仅能使整个氛围更轻松，还能在接下来的自由讨论中削弱对手的立场，达到四两拨千斤的效果。有一次我受邀在格拉茨的施泰尔秋季艺术节开幕式上发表演讲，我想指出我不仅有资格谈论医学，也有资格谈论哲学，但是又不想太高调，显得像在炫耀我同时拥有医学和哲学两个博士学位，于是我说：“女士们，先生们！我同时拥有医学和哲学两个博士学位，但是我通常不提这事，因为我在维也纳的那些亲爱的同事——据我了解，他们绝不会说，弗兰克尔是个双料博士，而只会说，他是半个医生。”
说到自由讨论，有一次我在慕尼黑的艺术学院做完演讲之后，观众开始提问，其中有一个年轻人颇具挑衅地问我：“弗兰克尔先生，你今天谈论的是性，可是像您这么忙碌的教授，每天不是上课就是开讨论会，哪里会有时间过健康自然的性生活呢，甚至都没空搞明白那是怎么一回事吧？！”
“这位朋友，是这样的，”我答道，“你的话让我想起维也纳的一个古老的笑话：有个人碰到一个面包师，在聊天中得知面包师有10个孩子，特别惊奇地问道：‘哎，那你到底什么时候烤面包呢？’”听到这儿，观众都笑了起来。
我接着说：“你的问题也是这样。难道你觉得，如果一个人白天忙着学术工作，那他晚上就无法过正常的性生活了吗？”这时观众转而开始笑那个年轻人了。
还有一次是在美国一所大学的神学院演讲后的自由讨论环节，那次我并不想让别人尴尬，而是想让自己免于尴尬。当时有人问我对于著名神学家保罗·田立克所说的“上帝之上的上帝”
（TheGodabovetheGod）的概念的理解，实际上，我并不了解这个概念，却仍然平静地回答：“我想，如果我敢回答你这个关于‘上帝之上的上帝’的问题，这岂不是在说，我认为自己是‘田立克之上的田立克’了吗？”
我不光乐于开玩笑，还喜欢笑话。有好长一段时间，我都想着要写一本专门研究笑话的形而上学的书。我知道的最好笑的一个笑话是这样的，一个人来到一个住了很多犹太人的波兰小镇，他想去妓院，可是又不好意思直接问别人妓院的位置，于是他便问路边一个穿着长袍的犹太老者：“请问你们的拉比住在哪儿？”
老者回答说：“在那儿，那栋绿色的房子里。”
“什么？”这个人装作一副很惊讶的样子，“那位德高望重的拉比竟然住在妓院？”
老者立马斥责他：“你胡说什么！妓院明明是前面那栋红色的房子。”
“谢谢。”那人与老者告辞，高兴地朝妓院走去。
其实我们医生与病人谈话时，不也常常使用这种方式嘛。刚做医生没多久，我就掌握了这种对话方法，比如，如果我想知道一位女性患者的病史，不要问“您堕过胎吗？”，而是要问“您流过几次产？”。
再比如，千万不要这么问一个男性病人，“您染过梅毒吗？”而要问“您接受过几次梅毒病治疗？”。
还有，我们也不要问一个精神分裂症患者，是否听到有人在和他说话，而应该问“那个人跟你说了些什么？”。
有个讽刺心身医学的玩笑编得很棒：有个人因为患了头疼、耳鸣、脑部充血的毛病而被转诊到精神分析师那边，他去看精神分析师的路上经过一家服装店，突然想起需要一件新衬衫，就走进店去要售货员拿给他某种样式的衬衫。
“你要多大码的？”售货员问。
“42码。”他答道。
“相信我，你应该穿43码的。”
“别多说了，就给我拿42码的好了。”
“好吧，不过要是你到时候感到头疼、耳鸣、脑部充血的话，不要感到奇怪。”
还有一个笑话可以很好地解释什么是药物精神病学，一个纳粹军官坐在一个犹太人的对面，那个犹太人拿出一条鲱鱼来吃，吃到最后只剩下鱼头，便把鱼头小心翼翼地装回袋子里收好。
“你为什么这样做？”纳粹军官好奇地询问。
“鱼头里有鱼脑，我把它带回去给孩子吃，他们吃了会变聪明。”
“你能不能把鱼头卖给我？”
“当然可以。”
“多少钱？”
“一马克。”
“给你一马克。”纳粹军官买了鱼头，马上吃了下去。
5分钟后，纳粹军官非常生气地质问犹太人：“该死的犹太佬！一整条鲱鱼才卖一毛钱，鱼头你却卖我一马克！”
犹太人平静地说道：“你看，那鱼头确实管用吧。”
治疗病因和单纯的治疗病症是不同的，或许我们可以借助一个笑话解释二者的区别：有个人外出度假，但每天早晨都会被一只公鸡吵醒，于是他去药店买了些安眠药，加进公鸡的饲料里。看，这就是治疗病因！
