《文化怪杰·辜鸿铭：东西之中》：
一、走出槟榔屿的华裔少年24年前，也就是1857年，辜鸿铭出生于马来半岛槟榔屿的一个华侨世家。
这个长15里，宽8里的太平洋上的小岛，像一枚狭长的树叶，漂浮在马六甲海峡的入口处，那条沟通东西的漫长航路就从这里穿过。特殊的地理位置似乎暗示了某种特别的含义，这个小岛在很长的时间里难以确定自己的所属。15世纪末以后，先是葡萄牙人，再是荷兰人，然后是英国人，都来到这里拓殖，然而比他们早得多到达这里的，是中国人。这些从中国福建、广东诸省越岭越洋而来的中国人，成为南洋最早的华侨。
槟榔屿的辜氏家族，祖籍即系福建同安。
欧洲人与中国人来到南洋的起因迥然相异。前者是为了夺取殖民地——西洋民族那种融于血脉之中的“扩张性格”；而中国人素有“安土重迁”的传统，这些最初的华侨之所以背井离乡，多是出于被迫无奈。“国人南来，非因畏罪潜逃，或避难流亡，即系冒险经商，或为人役使，国内较有身份，能安居乐业者。决不致跋涉重洋，寄居南荒。”所以，他们是中国大陆的一群“逃逸者”，虽然身上打着中国人的烙印，却已被一个封闭、一统的文化视为异己，摒除在外。明清两朝均实行过严厉的海禁，违者轻则杖，重则斩。“流居海外的华人，一则被认为‘多系不安本分之人’，当作天朝之弃民，一则听任殖民政府或当地土人的屠杀”。也许可以这样说，华侨是这样一种类型的人，他们最深地体现了一种微妙的文化处境：他们既是中国人，又是男外的某国人；同时，他们既不是中国人，也不是另外的某国人。所以，他们好像总是“外国人”。这使他们在获得某种自由的同时又遭受着一种窘迫，自由与窘迫似乎都源于那最初的漂泊命运。身份的似是而非、似非而是最容易产生的结果就是不为人承认。虽然华侨是开发南洋最主要的力量，可是他们从未成为这里的主人。
这里的主人是英国人。
1786年，英国人莱特（Light）从荷兰人手中接管槟榔屿。他带领船队在小岛登陆以后，发现这个地方人烟稀少，满目荒凉。正在此时，几个华侨从附近的吉打岛赶来，为首一个叫辜礼欢的，向莱特献上一张渔网以示欢迎。英国人在槟榔屿的垦殖开始以后，这个最先向英国人表示善意的华人被任命为首任“甲必丹”（Captain，当地居民的首领，管理各族日常事务）。
辜礼欢，就是辜鸿铭的曾祖父。辜氏的先人从福建移居马来半岛以后一直以捕鱼为生，是辜礼欢让辜氏家族开始兴盛。他的八子三女里头，辜国材成为到新加坡的最早的华人；辜安平被送回中国读书，并考中进士，做了林则徐的部下，后赴台供职；辜龙池，也就是辜鸿铭的祖父，在吉打州殖民政府里任公职。
辜龙池的儿子辜紫云，也就是辜鸿铭的父亲，在槟榔屿为一个叫福布斯·布朗（ForbesBrown）的英国人管理橡胶园，深受布朗的器重，他们关系融洽而亲密。
毫无疑问，在辜鸿铭来到这个世界上以前，他的家族就已经通过自己的奋斗，在这片新开发的地域里争取到了一个可观的位置。这一点对辜鸿铭而言是重要的。一个优裕的环境，能为人提供相对广阔的发展空间，辜鸿铭之所以在年少之际就能从容地游学于西欧，与之不无关系。而且，中上阶层的地位实际上也影响到他后来的某些思想取向，譬如他的贵族意识，他对精英人物的推重以及对民众力量的贬抑。人的思想意识往往植根于最初的土壤。
这个家族的成功方面首先在于“商”，但他们更注重于“学”（这是否也是一种中国式的兴趣？）否则辜安平就不会被送回中国念书了。虽然我们并不知道辜鸿铭的父亲辜紫云对儿子曾有什么样的培养方案，但从他送辜鸿铭出洋受教育的举动中。可以推知他一定“望子成龙”，并且希望他有某种智力上的成就。
辜鸿铭最终被一些人誉为“学贯中西”，这也许正符合了这个家族的期待。而且，他从一出生起，就在两种截然不同的氛围中成长。
在他的家庭里，父亲是华人，母亲是葡萄牙人。
橡胶园主人布朗，也即辜鸿铭的养父，是英国人。起码有两种语言——汉语和英语，成为他最初的语言。
虽然辜鸿铭一生中英语比汉语说得好，他的著作大部分也都用英文写成，但他无疑从幼年时代起就在接触中文。一本叫《辜鸿铭先生对我讲述的往事》的书中有这样的记载：辜鸿铭出洋前夕，辜紫云对他说：“无论你到哪里，你的周围是什么人，英国人、法国人，还是德国人，你都不要忘了你是中国人。”辜鸿铭是否确实从小受到诸如此类的爱国教育已不得而知，这里重要的是“中国人”这一名称，它是一种命名方式，关涉到“我是谁”这一问题，这种对自我的认证会沉到意识的深处，它不动声色地作用于我们的行动和看法。辜鸿铭肯定有过类似的命名。即使它会在另外一些因素的擦抹之下变得模糊不清，但只要有过，就必然会从记忆中再度浮起。
