父亲与寅恪伯父相交，是经俞大维先生介绍的。
俞大维先生与寅恪先生是“两代姻亲，三代世交，七年的同学”：寅恪先生的母亲俞明诗（字麟洲）是俞大维的嫡亲姑母；寅恪先生的胞妹陈新午是俞大维夫人；俞大维与寅恪先生在美国哈佛大学、德国柏林大学连续同学七年。
父亲是一九一七年由清华留美预备学校派往美国学习的。起初被分配到弗吉尼亚大学（University of Virginia）学习文学，插入文科二年级。一九一八年暑假，转入哈佛大学文学院比较文学系，从师白璧德（Irving Babbitt）。父亲在哈佛大学与俞大维先生相识。据父亲晚年所撰《吴宓自编年谱》（以下简称《年谱》）一九一九年篇：“宓去秋（笔者按，当指一九一八年秋）到波城（Boston）后，得识初来之自费留学生俞大维（David Yule）君。俞君浙江省山阴县人。其叔父俞恪士先生（名明震）为有名诗人，有诗集名《觚庵诗存》行世。辛亥革命时，任甘肃省提学使。民国四年，在北京任肃政使，与李孟符（岳瑞）世丈为知友。曾弹劾甘肃将军张广建，对营救吾父事颇有助力。俞大维君，毕业圣约翰大学，短小精悍，治学极聪明。其来美国，为专习哲学，然到哈佛研究院不两月，已尽通当时哲学最新颖而为时趋（fashionable）之部门曰数理逻辑学。Lewis 教授亟称许之。然于哲学其他部门，亦精熟，考试成绩均优。故不久即得哈佛大学哲学博士（Ph. D. in Philosophy），并由哈佛大学给与公费送往德国留学进修。哈佛大学本有梵文、印度哲学及佛学一系，且有卓出之教授Lanman先生等，然众多不知，中国留学生自俞大维君始探寻、发见而往受学焉。其后陈寅恪与汤用彤继之。……顾俞大维君识宓后，则多与宓谈中国文学。尝为宓口诵曾广钧所作之《庚子落叶词》十二首，吊珍妃也。君口诵而宓笔录之。今录入《吴宓诗集》卷末160 页者，是也。去秋，又屡偕俞大维君出游并作交际。
“俞大维君又多称道其姑表兄义宁江西省之县名，今改为修水县。陈寅恪君之博学与通识，并述其经历。诗人陈伯严先生（名三立），前夫人罗氏，生长子衡恪（字师曾），诗人，画家。继配夫人俞氏（俞大维之姑母，能诗），生（二、三、四，虚，无）五子隆恪、六子寅恪、七子方恪（宁彦通，能诗，而狂放佻达），八子登恪，留学法国，撰有《留西外史》小说。（宓按，陈寅恪君一八九○庚寅年生。年十一，留学日本。两度游学欧洲，先居巴黎，后居柏林。中间民国三年、四年，在北京为经界局局长蔡锷之秘书。又再赴欧洲，今始到美国。一九二五年，由宓荐，清华聘为国学研究院教授，月薪四百圆，乃回国。计其在外国留学之时期，凡十八年［与玄奘同］。）宓深为佩仰。
“一九一九年一月底二月初，陈寅恪君由欧洲来到美国。先寓康桥Cambridge 区宓注：哈佛大学及麻省理工学院均在此区。康桥之译名，乃中国留学生所定。同一字也，在英国则用旧译之“剑桥”，在美国则用新译之“康桥”，以分别之，使毋混淆，法至善也。之Mt. Auburn 街。由俞大维君介见。以后宓恒往访，聆其谈述。则寅恪不但学问渊博，且深悉中西政治、社会之内幕。……述说至为详切。其历年在中国文学、史学及诗之一道，所启迪、指教宓者，更多不胜记也。（详见《吴宓诗集》及续集稿本）”

Introduction

我是吴宓（雨僧）最小的女儿，抗日战争期间，跟随母亲陈心一在上海祖父母家居住和上学。抗战胜利后一年，我到北平上大学，父亲没有因昆明西南联合大学宣告结束复员北平，而去武汉大学教书了。武汉解放前夕，他又到了四川。所以，我与父亲相处的时间不长。但即使在那有限的接触和交谈中，我也深深感到父亲与陈寅恪伯父两心相知，友谊深挚，始终不渝。两位老人在“文化大革命”中受尽摧残折磨去世后，我捧读劫后残存的父亲遗稿，以及他与陈寅恪伯父相互写示的诗篇，更加感受到这种友谊的深不可及的内蕴及其悲剧色彩。
一九九○年，为纪念陈寅恪伯父诞辰一百周年，也为纪念父亲吴宓诞辰九十六周年，我根据父亲的日记及遗稿赶写了《吴宓与陈寅恪》一书，心想或许可为关心两位老人的朋友凭寄哀思，而对研究工作者也有些参考作用。没想到书出版后，竟“像出土文物一般，令人惊喜”，受到读者关注，特别是父亲生前的许多友生，如田德望、王宪钧、王岷源、王般、李赋宁、何炳棣等先生来信来电，给与鼓励和指正。本书虽先后十多次重印，时隔多年，已经绝版。今应广大读者要求，重新排印增订本，名为增订，实际重写。根据后来陆续寻回的父亲遗稿以及近年收集和积累的有关资料，对内容做了必要的补充修订。笔者水平有限，疏漏和错误之处，尚希读者提出批评，帮助改正。
