梅特莱教养所——位于巴黎西南方向的都兰地区——热内在这里体验了首次性行为，不管是在此教养时期，还是在以后的生活里，它都成为热内眼中充满性欲色彩的伊甸园，因为这里有许多接受规训与惩罚的年轻人。梅特莱教养所是一个与世隔绝、自给自足的世界，充满了各种离经叛道的、变态错乱的力量，它令热内兴奋不已。最重要的是，这是一座没有围墙的监狱，那些隔离式牢房被包围在鲜花和广阔的田野之中。热内在年老时写道：“众所周知，梅特莱教养所最好的发明之一就是它四周没有围墙……逃跑时必须要越过一畦畦的花木，那是一件相当困难的事情。1840年代，梅特莱教养所在刚刚开办的时候，曾经被视为一种先锋的、受人尊敬的实验。（同样地，对于那些始作俑者而言，小罗盖特儿童监狱也曾是一种形式创新。）然而，到了热内被流放至此的时候，它已经濒临衰败，建筑物急速地老化、腐朽，教养所的员工不再像他们的前任一样肩负着修缮的使命。热内待在这里的3年时间里，作为公共服务机构的梅特莱已经负债累累。热内被监禁在一个规训与惩罚的体制内，但是这个体制在前一世纪立下的雄心壮志已经被遗忘殆尽，因此，他只是在监狱的幽灵和碎片中穿行，而不是在其过往里程碑式的形式下驻足不前。梅特莱教养所荒废了，热内在它上面层叠了许多变幻无常的想法，并且在自己的小说和电影中性感地重建。热内离开10年后，梅特莱教养所逐渐衰败，最后在1939年彻底关闭。

按照缔造者的初衷，梅特莱教养所原本希望根据有益的家庭形式来改造每一座牢房，使之成为具有绝对权力和纪律的男性等级制机构。每一次强制劳动和残酷惩罚都是变相的宗教行动——每天的生活被定期的祷告活动间断；最严厉的惩罚是把这些年轻人关在冰冷刺骨、令人窒息、幽暗惨淡的禁闭室里，他们只能隐约地看见墙上的白色大字：“上帝注视着你。”许多犯人被冻死在牢房里。很多时候，年轻人都被迫在这个所谓的家庭的“老大哥”的监视下缓慢、无休无止地兜圈子。如果被发现有鸡奸或者手淫行为，他们将会遭受最严酷的惩罚。接受改造的年轻人还被派到教养所周围的田野里或者车间里做工，直到精疲力竭为止。为了离开教养所，大多数人都在当地办事处签署了长期的兵役合同。为海军训练犯人，曾经是梅特莱的传统，但是，当热内在那里时，海军已经停止征召这些缺乏教养的在监囚犯。

随着新闻战的展开，媒体不断公开批评梅特莱的残酷制度，致使其声名扫地，最后不得不彻底关闭。
