《阿英的故事》：
4岁以后我逐渐记事了。我很喜欢我生活的这个村子，有百余户人家，多数姓陆。村西头有陆氏祠堂，村子向南可以望见锡山，锡山有头茅峰、二茅峰、三茅峰。锡山的颜色在白天随光照变化而跟着变化，非常美丽。每户人家门前都有晒场地，可以乘凉，晒稻谷。开春的时候田野里豆花香、菜花黄，我常和小伙伴采摘鲜嫩的蚕豆吃。片片稻田、桑田、油菜田，每到吐绿、开花和收获的时候，景色美极了。尤其当桑树的绿叶茂盛时，晶莹的桑葚果更是诱使我和小伙伴采摘，鲜红的果汁沾满了小嘴周围。孩童天性活泼，每到收割季节，村民都很忙碌，每户门前的晒场上铺满了收割来的庄稼，晒干后就用手摇脱粒机脱粒，而后再把麦秆或稻秆堆成一个个塔形的垛，这时，我们一群孩童就欢快地在草堆里打滚嬉闹。玩抬轿子嫁新娘的游戏和晚饭后玩老鹰抓小鸡或者捉迷藏，让我尽享幼年的欢乐生活。
给我印象更深的是后门那条小鱼游来游去的清澈小河。清晨，从河西边来了被称之为“班船”的小木船，路经村子停留片刻，有人搭船，也有人托船工从城里捎点东西。黄昏前班船就会回来了。在河西岸有座独木桥，又高又窄，只能容一人通过。有时会看到雨中赤脚挑着担子头戴斗笠身披蓑衣的农夫小心翼翼地过桥，独木桥和农夫的影子倒映在水面上，就像是幅画儿。
村子里常有些民俗活动，我特感兴趣的是“抛梁”，就是有人家翻造房屋，装上大梁之后，就举办“抛梁”。男主人爬到梁上，将做好的各种糕点、团子等食品往远处抛，这时大人小孩都去抢拾，因为大人说，能拿到抛梁的食品会长福气的，我就曾有幸捡到过一个大馒头呢。按传统村里每年还要搞一次“打醮”活动，以求老天爷保佑全村平安。由每户轮流主办，在村头竖起一根高高的大粗竹竿，挂上一个灯笼，标识要“打醮”，这时要请和尚、道士进场做法事，要做好几天。有糖果吃，大人再给几个铜板的小红包，放放鞭炮。长辈们则聚在一起喝茶聊天玩纸牌推牌九，小村子呈现一派欢乐气氛。节前家家户户都忙着做年糕，每块年糕像长方砖一样，上面打个圆形红印表示吉祥。亲朋好友之间以年糕相赠，祖母拿只小竹篮放上两块年糕，让我替她送给左邻右舍。人家收到后，又将自家做的年糕放在小篮子里叫我带回作为回敬，还会在我的衣服口袋里装一把长生果（花生）。
长长的舞龙灯的队伍有一二十人，人们争相看热闹。
龙灯还会从我家前门到后门游舞一圈，祝贺吉祥。当然也有贫困人家，只能蜷缩在屋里准备过年。正月十五之前，常有打竹板的人到门口，说着吉祥贺年的话，乞讨些年货。主人给他们几片年糕或一碗大米，这些乞讨者几乎都是来自较贫困的江北地区。
祖母娘家以前也过的是苦日子，所以对村里游手好闲企图不劳而获的人，她见之就会痛骂。她很注意节俭，四季喝水缸里的冷水，从不为自己泡碗茶。她一日三餐总很简单，不愿大吃大喝。她很勤劳，经常到桑田锄草、培土、担粪、施肥，每年还要养春夏两季蚕宝宝。养蚕很辛苦，从选种、培育幼茧，都要悉心照料。半夜起床撸叶，注意清洁，防虫防鼠，还要注意给蚕宝宝保温。桑叶要及时采摘，保证供应，直到蚕宝宝作茧。
我虽年幼，也常努力给大人们打打下手，只是也有帮倒忙的时候。记得有一年抚育春蚕时，我在房间里擦煤油灯罩，不小心打翻了煤油灯，油气浓烈，把蚕宝宝都呛死了。祖母经济损失很大，心疼，把我好一顿数落。还有一次祖母要我跟随几个大一点的孩子去摘荠菜、麻菌、金花菜等野菜，大孩子们摘得很快，而我因不能辨认野菜，胡乱地摘了一些回家，很忐忑地把“成绩”给祖母看，果然又被教训了，于是我才知道野外有很多绿色植物是不能吃的。
