《胡适四十自述》：
序幕我的母亲的订婚太子会①是我们家乡秋天最热闹的神会，但这一年的太子会却使许多人失望。
神伞一队过去了。都不过是本村各家的绫伞，没有什么新鲜花样。去年大家都说，恒有绸缎庄预备了一顶珍珠伞。因为怕三先生说话，故今年他家不敢拿出来。
昆腔今年有四队，总算不寂寞。昆腔子弟都穿着“半截长衫”，上身是白竹布，下半是湖色杭绸。每人小手指上挂着湘妃竹柄的小纨扇，吹唱时纨扇垂在笙笛下面摇摆着。
扮戏今年有六出，都是“正戏”，没有一出花旦戏，这也是三先生的主意。后村的子弟本来要扮一出《翠屏山》，也因为怕三先生说话，改了《长坂坡》。其实七月的日光底下，甘、糜二夫人脸上的粉已被汗洗光了，就有潘巧云也不会怎样特别出色。不过看会的人的心里总觉得后村很漂亮的小棣没有扮潘巧云的机会，只扮作了糜夫人，未免太可惜了。
今年最扫兴的是没有扮戏的“抬阁”。后村的人早就练好了两架“抬阁”，一架是《龙虎斗》，一架是《小上坟》。不料三先生今年回家过会场，他说抬阁太高了，小孩子热天受不了暑气，万一跌下来，不是小事体。他极力阻止，抬阁就扮不成了。．粗乐和昆腔一队一队的过去了。扮戏一出一出的过去了。接着便是太子的神轿。路旁的观众带着小孩的，都喊道，“拜呵！拜呵！”许多穿着白地蓝花布褂的男女小孩都合掌拜揖。
神轿的后面便是拜香的人！有的穿着夏布长衫，捧着炷香；有的穿着短衣，拿着香炉挂，炉里烧着檀香。还有一些许愿更重的，今天来“吊香”还愿；他们上身穿着白布褂，扎着朱青布裙，远望去不容易分别男女。他们把香炉吊在铜钩上，把钩子钩在手腕肉里，涂上香灰，便可不流血。今年吊香的人很多，有的只吊在左手腕上，有的双手都吊；有的只吊一个小香炉，有的一只手腕上吊着两个香炉。他们都是虔诚还愿的人，悬着挂香炉的手腕，跟着神轿走多少里路，虽然有自家人跟着打扇，但也有半途中了暑热走不动的。
冯顺弟搀着她的兄弟，跟着她的姑妈，站在路边石磴上看会。她今年十四岁了，家在十里外的中屯，有个姑妈嫁在上庄，今年轮着上庄做会，故她的姑丈家接她姐弟来看会。
她是个农家女子，从贫苦的经验里得着不少的知识，故虽是十四岁的女孩儿，却很有成人的见识。她站在路旁听着旁人批评今年的神会，句句总带着三先生。“三先生今年在家过会，可把会弄糟了。”“可不是呢，抬阁也没有了。”“三先生还没有到家，八都的鸦片烟馆都关门了，赌场也都不敢开了。七月会场上没有赌场，又没有烟灯，这是多年没有的事。” 看会的人，你一句，他一句，顺弟都听在心里。
她心想，三先生必是一个了不得的人，能叫赌场烟馆都不敢开门。
会过完了，大家纷纷散了。忽然她听见有人低声说，“三先生来了！”她抬起头来，只见路上的人都纷纷让开一条路；只听见许多人都叫“三先生”。
前面走来了两个人。一个高大的中年人，面容紫黑，有点短须，两眼有威光，令人不敢正眼看他；他穿着苎布大袖短衫，苎布大脚管的裤子，脚下穿着麻布鞋子，手里拿着一杆旱烟管。和他同行的是一个老年人，瘦瘦身材，花白胡子，也穿着短衣，拿着旱烟管。
顺弟的姑妈低低说，“那个黑面的，是三先生；那边是月吉先生，他的学堂就在我们家的前面。听人说三先生在北边做官，走过了万里长城，还走了几十日，都是没有人烟的地方，冬天冻杀人，夏天热杀人；冬天冻塌鼻子，夏天蚊虫有苍蝇那么大。三先生肯吃苦，不怕日头不怕风，在万里长城外住了几年，把脸晒的像包龙图一样。”
