《剪辑之道：对话沃尔特·默奇》以问答的形式展开，讲述了默奇在剪辑《教父》《对话》《现代启示录》《英国病人》等重要影片的创作心得。在这些对话中，默奇的剪辑观念、电影观念乃至整体的艺术观念表现得淋漓尽致。跟随其创作轨迹，可以看到他以及同时代的科波拉、卢卡斯这群有才气的胡子拉碴的年轻人，如何从独立制作起步，成立反好莱坞的西洋镜公司，再创作出《现代启示录》这样的里程碑作品。

Author Description

迈克尔·翁达杰（Michael Ondaatje），加拿大著名诗人、作家，1943年生于斯里兰卡，11岁随母亲来到英国，19岁移居加拿大，毕业于多伦多大学。他的作品兼具文学的语言美感和电影的视觉冲击力，通过诗性直觉和叙事节奏的交揉变化，达到一种极具个人风格的境界。迄今为止，翁达杰共出版了6部长篇小说、10余部诗集和其他一些非虚构著作。其中，《英国病人》荣获布克奖，由沃尔特·默奇担任剪辑、安东尼·明格拉执导的同名改编电影获9项奥斯卡奖。

夏彤，北京大学及加拿大艾米利·卡尔艺术大学（Emily Carr University）毕业，电影作品多次参加国际电影节并获奖。现为中央美术学院电影系教师，工作涉及独立电影和科幻研究多个领域，译有《眨眼之间》（沃尔特·默奇著）、《纪录我们自己》、《温斯顿特效》等。

《剪辑之道：对话沃尔特·默奇》：
2000年春，沃尔特·默奇应科波拉的请求开始重剪《现代启示录》。默奇在1977年至1979年间曾为这部影片工作，当时他既是该片的声音设计师，又是剪辑画面的四个剪辑师之一。二十二年之后，所有素材，包括被抛弃的和“遗失”的场景，以及所有音效资料都从深藏的地窖中找出来，重新受到检视（它们都被小心保存在宾夕法尼亚州的几个石灰岩山洞中，洞内温度和湿度都有严格的控制）。此时此刻，《现代启示录》已经在美国人的心灵深处生根，所以某种程度上说，这对于重剪就变成了一个问题。我在美国西洋镜公司跟沃尔特相处了一天，次日我在旧金山跟小说家阿尔弗雷多·维亚（AlfredoVéa）共进晚餐时，向他提起重剪《现代启示录》的事，维亚马上就背诵起马龙·白兰度那段“刀片上的蜗牛”的独白。晚餐过程中，维亚又惟妙惟肖地模仿丹尼斯·霍珀（DennisHopper）的唠叨：“他们会怎么说这个人？会怎么说？说他是个好人？是个有智慧的人？……”。维亚曾参加越战，对他而言，《现代启示录》是代表了那场战争的唯一电影，是艺术的结晶，它为他捕捉到了这场战争的精髓，并为他提供了一种可资参照的神话结构，告诉他自己曾如何历经沧桑，并让他在后来的岁月中能把自己写进诸如《诸神的乞讨》（GodsGoBegging）那样的书中。所以那些为新版《现代启示录》工作的人们，很明白把这样一部“经典”之作拆散了重新建构将会遭遇到什么样的问题。它已经是美国人的公共财产了。
“它确实已经成了我们文化的一部分，”默奇说，“那不是一条单行道。你们写作的人也了解这个。作品对文化产生影响，文化对作品也同样产生神秘的作用力。即使是同样那几卷胶片，《现代启示录》在公元2000年的时候跟在1979年它发行前的那一秒钟相比，已经迥然不同了。”
发行新版本的想法最初源自科波拉想出版一张DVD影碟，以便把好几场重要的场景添加回去。在1979年的版本中，由于影片时长的限制，这些戏份都删除了。同时，2000年又是西贡陷落的二十五周年，所以重新评估最初的剪辑决定似乎也是合乎时宜的，因为当年做出剪辑方案的时候，战争的创痛尚在灼烧着美利坚民族的灵魂。既然是出DVD，与其把恢复的场景单独一段段罗列出来、放在各自的章节后面，为什么不把它们按最初的设想有机地融进电影整体中呢？问题是那些删除段落的画面剪辑和音效工作本来就没有完成，特别是有一场戏，当年我们决定要删除它时，它根本还没有拍摄完成。所幸的是，底片和原始的声音素材都完善地保存着，它们还保持着当年从洗印厂送回来时的一卷卷胶片的状态，二十年后它们还可以被取出来使用，仿佛是几个星期前才刚刚拍摄的一样。
